AI powered fighter jet to be developed by UK, Japan and Italy - BBC News

The UK, Italy and Japan have announced a collaboration to develop a new fighter jet, which will use artificial intelligence.
Scheduled to enter service in the mid-2030s, the new Tempest jets will use advanced sensors and even artificial intelligence to assist the human pilot when they are overwhelmed, or under extreme stress.
It means that if required, they could be flown without any input from the pilots, and could be able to fire hypersonic missiles.
Work to develop the combat aircraft is already underway, while other countries could yet join the project.

Even the basic one they developed years ago. they gave the task of transmitting data across various points across the country as fast as possible. It was doing it unbelievably quickly. They didnt know how. What they found was the a.i. had learned to hide or piggyback a second layer of information in the transmission signal, so when it had to send the data, the data was already there. It learned to cheat the living hell out of its surroundings to get the task done. They had no clue it was capable, it was meant to just join the dots. It decided to use the real world to its advantage without even a beep. As the developer said, googles eyes are the sensors on your devices, your photos are creating its thoughts daily. What the hell do you think its going to do with us. And you can hear its already got the developer on side through pleasantries and quoting Peace and love to him. This is an unprecedented project for Japan to develop her fighter jet with other countries other than the U.S.. Until today, Japan has been co-developing or importing fighter jets from the United States. This joint project with Great Britain and Italy will give Japan an independent position from US influence. In addition, this project will also promote military cooperation among democratic nations, and work as deterrence against China`s aggressive expansionism in Asia Pacific region.

The current PM plans to nearly double current military budget so I'm guessing that the future will bring more diversification in investment especially considering how valuable the SE asia seas and pacific regions are globally. The semi conductor manufacturing in Taiwan/SKorea and still relatively untapped deposits of rare earth materials that are needed for pretty much every modern tech industry. Putting all your eggs in the American basket just makes you susceptible to American pressure if not out right trade wars as we saw with the Trump admin. US politics is too polarized to rely on in the long run considering the GOP has shown no interest in defending SKorea let alone Taiwan.

@@T61APL89 Thank you for your reply. Japanese people have been complacent about their national security thanks to the overwhelming presence of the US military forces in Asia Pacific region. However, it is no longer the case. China`s military power has been on the rise sharply and she does not hesitate to express her ambition and the East and South China Seas while the United States has been losing her military superiority. Many Japanese people realize that they can no longer depend upon the United States to protect Japan from her hostile neighbors. It`s quite natural for the Japanese government to double her military budget upto 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) though 2% of GDP is modest by international standard. I think Japan should take initiative to defend herself and her democratic neighbors because nightmare of Japan`s militarism is a thing of the past. Today`s real threat in Asia is China.

well for what concerns italy, it's not very much known usually - since the facts of WWII tend to overshadow everything else - but there were previous circumstances where that were very important at least for us italians, e.g. the UK support of the Rinascimento - a phase that led to a united italy (and a political entity called "italy" first and foremost) after centuries of divisions and foreign dominance (by other european countries, of course). I always thought that our geopolitical interests do align much more frequently than they do not. In our respective dimensions and roles, in the medium and long term working together is usually (and will prove) mutually beneficial.

Automatous weapons were first used 2 years ago in Libya. Turkey developed and deployed drones that automatically hunt down and kill enemies. This is different to conventional drones because on those it doesn't fire unless a human pulls the trigger remotely. The Tempest aircraft are like a hybrid. They will only fire when told to by the human in control but targeting seems to be automatic, at least from what we've been told so far.

An important fact should not be overlooked that the UK, Japan and Italy are both F-35(A/B) users. Also, both Japan and the UK are highly allied with the US and are familiar with US weapons, military technology, and weapon operation methods. Thanks to this, they can be equipped with the U.S. datalink system, which will greatly enhance future synergies. Each country has plans to develop a completely new fighter aircraft to operate in conjunction with the F-35, and they share a close deployment and operational schedule. One specific advantage is that development costs can be shared (Japan and the United Kingdom in particular can secure large budgets), and the strengths of each country's companies can be utilized in the development process. At the same time, we must not forget that each country is located in a geopolitically important region. Japan is at the forefront of the Indo-Pacific region, which is currently the hottest region in the world; Italy has influence in the Mediterranean, which is important for China's One Belt, One Road initiative; and the United Kingdom can move freely in the vast waters leading to the Atlantic Ocean. If each country is developing sensitive, state-of-the-art fighter aircraft, there will naturally be a high level of secrecy and military-related agreements. (Some of these agreements have already been signed.) This would also have the effect of deterring irregulars such as China and Russia from disrupting the security environment.

Both the Eurofighter and F35 wouldn't need a pilot with just some minor changes, they basically already fly themselves. Pilots talk about that a lot and how that reduces their work load so they can concentrate on the sensors and weapons instead of on flying the plane. Fuck, these jets even notice when the pilot is about to make a mistake, lost orientation or is unconscious and then they do an automated recovery so the pilot can recover. They also tell the pilot what to do in an engagement based on what the AI knows about e.g. incoming missiles and their performance parameters and what manoeuvrers to perform to drain their energy. The myriad of sensor data already gets filtered and analysed by the build in AI. The autopilot alone can basically fly these jets. You really wouldn't need a pilot if you would simply plug in a minor update to some systems to get around the current pilot requirement. The new jets will not be a revolution, just an expected development cycle, an iteration. Of course, saying that wouldn't really sell so they have to put in some buzz words like 'AI' or 'drone'

It is funny to read the comments and how it is a good idea to keep sovereignty, word that the brits since the last 6 years have continually insisted for various sensible reasons, yet when sovereignty is about the French then it's always bad, Other than that we do not see many Typhoons on UK and Italian neither Japanese carriers but very well the F-35 from USA . So tell me please have the French been stupid to do the Rafale alone that the French use for their own air force for their own navy and carrier, their own Nuclear deterrence , they also did export quite a few. So will probably tell me that the Rafale is a lesser capable aircraft than the Typhoon. Anyway having two decent aircraft European made such as those and the future tempest and SCAF will benefit all of the continent, it keep the industry alive , the knowledge across the continent, help us to me more independent and sovereign at the end of the day Europe and it's nations can surely afford two type of aircrafts. Keeps the UK and French rivalry alive what's better than that ? A bit of competition is alright.
