Ahmet Zappa: what's life like when Frank’s your father?

Музыка

Ahmet Zappa is the co-curator of the sprawling Zappa archive, a vault with "literally tens of thousands of recordings". In this highly engaging Zoom to his West Coast bunker, he talks about growing up in a home where "comedy was a currency"(memories rebooted by listening to old tapes), his Dad's celebrity and his time in jail, the two songs he co-wrote with him, the unique way he composed and rehearsed musicians, the release plans, the whole new audience for Zappa music and the just-out box-set soundtrack for the Alex Winter brilliant documentary. Be warned: there's framed letter from Frank on his wall that'll bring a tear to the eye.

I’m 22 years old, I discovered franks music when I was 13 and i love it as much as I did when I heard it almost 10 years ago. Not to brag but just to illustrate that I’m proof of te fan base not dying off.

Ahmet seems like a great guy. I've read some don't like him running the trust because of Dweezil not being able to use his father's likeness, but it seems like Ahmet is just honoring his dad's wishes and its actually taken a toll on him and matured him. He used to be a wild giant kid, but looking after his dad's music made him settle down and understand his dad more.

Discovered Frank around 2000. My Dad had Cheap Thrills on CD and haven't looked back since. Mind is still blown over two decades later. 100% unique & life changing the day I discovered him. The way he played in the early '80s live, where I can relate it elsewhere, is to Ry Cooder and his bandmates at the time --- that sort of calypso RnB bluesy/Roots/Rock/Doo wop style. Listening to Bop Till You Drop and Boarderline I'm like, "this sounds very Frank Zappa in parts". Or Frank heard those albums and embarked on his subsequent tours with Ike Willis and each of those albums' styles in mind.

Ed Mann told me that Frank boasted to him that my drum and bugle corps the Concord Blue Devils were playing Enchinda's Arf (of you) as the percussion feature and in 2017 the Canton Bluecoats played Zomby woof with the whole corps and now this year (2024) the Boston Crusaders are playin gG-Spot Tornadeo. My son got his line mates in the pit to play Black Page in Individual and ensemble competition.

i wonder how the management of the 'Zappa Estate' is going for Ahmet. The story i've heard is that the way Gail (his mum) organised everything legally, basically means that it's practically impossible for anyone to cover any of Frank's work without a lawsuit resulting. So much so, that even when Dweezil did a live 'Zappa Plays Zappa' tour, he was served with a 'cease and desist' order from the Zappa Estate, which is controlled by his siblings Ahmet & Moon! (the gist i get is that it's not their fault but, for some reason, Gail made sure that everything became contractually enmired and difficult)

Gail had to protect the Music & Composer’s reputation. Once the news of FZ’s passing was released, every Hack on the planet tried to cash-in on Franks very name! It must have been rough! Losing Frank Zappa, in whatever capacity you were involved, was a HUGE LOSS! I personally cried my eyes out, and left California for the East Coast. I was shattered, left friends & family, a job, a place, my car, EVERYTHING. It was like being a winner ALL your life, and one day Losing!!! Loss of purpose & perspective.

If you really want to understand Frank I heartily recommend his book “The real Frank Zappa” - a rip roaring read. Very insightful and very funny - particularly the details of his court case in Britain when he was up on an obscenity charge.

great book. anyone who still sees Frank as that scary, hairy, weirdo, smart-ass filthmonger will soon see (from his interviews too) that he was frighteningly intelligent - his thought logic and the ability to dismantle any argument was amazing, even in front of Congress at the PMRC hearings was scary. if anyone ever thought he was just a dumb rock musician, they would soon find out to their cost that he was way, way beyond their intellectual level. My favourite quote from the book is, i think when he got a Synclavier and composed a classical piece; when he wanted it performed live, he was told that it was not possible 'as it would require a left-handed piano'

just remembered, didn't he foresee the internet/Video on demand/streaming? IIRC he imagined a system where upon payment of a fee, you could watch music/video 'content' through your TV, which would be delivered using the phone line.

It was Frank that took the Royal Albert Hall to court for breach of contract. Their defence was presenting a bogus, lame charge of obscenity. Frank won of course, technically.

I think I read somewhere that Moon said that her father liked Amy Grant. Which sounds strange. But I also read that Eric Morecombe was a Frank Zappa fan.
