Virpil solves the problem with the covers using software. In the Virpil SW there is a function called “Press and hold”. This activates a second button for the hold function. Press = Button 35; Hold = Button 46; Simple solution for the covered button: DCS assignment: Emerg.Jettison - Depress = Button 46; Emerg.Jettison - Guard -> OPEN = Button 35; Emerg.Jettison - Guard -> CLOSE = Button 35_OFF. When you press the Emerg.Jettison button on the collective, the guard is opened, when you hold the button it is triggered and when you release the button the guard is automatically closed. 🙂

You can add a binding to the 3 way switches in dcs! You have to do it manually. Go to the bindings, right click the action an add a combo for the OFF state of the up and down switch position. The 3 way switch works as follow: up position = JOY_BTN1, down position = JOY_BTN2, the middle position is then= JOY_BTN1_OFF & JOY_BTN2_OFF.

It's beautiful. Let me wipe this tear from my eye. Actually you can Bind the ON/OFF/STOW switch in DCS or any toggle switch, it was added back in 2.8. Go into the controls and bind the ON switch. Now go to the OFF and bind it to the same ON Switch. Now click on the button you just bound and it will make a drop down. Now select that Button_OFF. Example of a ON/OFF/ON switch which is Button 30 and 31. I bind the ON switch to button 30. I select the OFF and bind it to button 30. I click on where it says Button 30 and it brings up the dropdown and I select Button 30_OFF. I now bind the STOW to Button 31. I now make a new bind on OFF and bind it to Button 31, click on Button 31 to bring up the dropdown and select Button 31_OFF. Now when you switch it from ON-OFF it will work and STOW-OFF will work.

DCS now has a way to bind the OFF state of a toggle switch, but needs to be set individually for each switch you want it to recognize in the OFF condition. That was something they added months ago but was never mentioned in any of the patch notes. You first need to know what the name of the specific switch you want, say for example JOY_BUTTON_21. Go into the key bindings, double click the control you want to bind under the appropriate controller, go to the drop drown menu and set JOY_BUTTON_21_OFF. DCS will then recognize that switch state. Works on both 2 and 3 way switches. Great review!

All amazing, problem is not many have the room to place 2-3 virtual cockpit setups in their Game Room. A quick replacement of controls when going to annother Module in DCS is neccessary for me. So I went VKB Omnithrottle together with the TM Warthog Throttle as left hand control. They stand on a fixable but easy forward and backward moveable plattform with the Omnithrottle a bit higher on the frontend. So I can fly anything DCS offers with ease without having to mount and dismount stuff whenever I change a Aircraft. But kudos to Virpil making great Collective Sticks! I was thinking about buying the Ka-50 version, but then I came to my senses :)

I wonder if VIRPIL will bring out a 2nd version down the line with microswitch under the switch covers, like they do with the control panel...

Love your content n00bifier but this seems a bit too condensed and sparse for a "Full Detailed Review", feels more like initial impressions. Why is the spring counter balance for the collective base considered non optional? what happens without it?. If I want to do something crazy like put the Apache grip in a VPC MongoosT-50CM3 Base, will it work? And if I want to be even nuttier and use it with a Z extension as a Frankenstein throttle can any of the included sets of springs/cams manage to center it? On one hand there is the perspective of the 'intended use case' which is to only be used for simulating the Apache crew experience, but for a "full detailed review" of a peripheral with this price tag, I'd like to see more than just the 'intended use case'.

There's no way you'd be able to use it on a Virpil base with the Z adapter. It would be way too much weight via cantilever. Even if you could get it to center, it would feel like super light springs pushing right, and super heavy springs pushing left. As the person who was building and showing off "omni-throttles" for six years before the first retail one appeared I can tell you this from experience. My v3 "omni throttle" (I always called them "throttle-sticks") was off center from the COG of the metal grip a small amount such that it was a little heavy on the right side, and I rebuilt it to correct this due to significantly uneven spring feel left vs. right.

However there is nothing about the build quality and "button feel". As someone who's 1st virpil product is this grip (and all that is required to have it work), one of my unknowns is button feel and build quality. Large portions of this video is dedicated to "history" and "Real World Functionality", which itself is fine and nice annedoctals to have to help bring context in. But as a video titled "Full Detailed Review" this felt more like a "Overview". Nevertheless, thank you for the video that helps unveil the grip a little more.

I expect that Virpil is going to want to make sure there's a way to use the buttons with the flip up covers that doesn't require third party software. It really is a shame they don't have switches on them to detect position. I expect it's probably too late for them to change the hardware there even if they didn't have a good reason for not doing this in the first place, but it might not be too late for them to change the searchlight switch.

Use the thumbstick on the mission control stick for up down left right translation during landings or delicate maneuvers and the 5 way hat on the flight stick for the same up down left right for dogfighting where i typically either want only full thrust or no thrust (personal preference) honestly a 8 way hat or joystick above the chop button would be way more ideal tbf Flight control trigger for targeting, 3 side way hat for power distribution, other 3 way for missile arm #, switching, missile mode. Mission control stick for landing gear, lights, scan, mining, doors, qt, landing request, starmap, ect. Disappointing that the Jettison and Chop covers aren’t switches to arm and safe those buttons. Otherwise, I’m still very excited to get my hands on it. I think I was one of the first orders, refreshing the store page from bed I think I got the collective and counter balance in my cart within the first minute.

IRL, the chop button is locked wired shut with some thin lock wire and spring loaded. The Jettison cover is spring loaded for the emergency jettison. If you want to take time and choose the pylons to jett you have the jettison panel. The covers don't arm anything. Ithe collective is more accurate then DCS' binds. Like the searchlight switch is correct.

This isn't the first time I've run into DCS giving bindings for physical covers that have no function other than enabling the button underneath them. I'd rather have the option than not, but it complicates things for cockpit and peripheral design. It might take some LUA scripting trial and error, but you might be able to define a custom binding in DCS that activates both functions (the cover lift and button press) just by pressing the covered buttons.

It would be far too long to balance on a Z-adapter I'm afraid. I know from experience that even if you can get a stick to center with an unevenly weighted grip, it makes the spring tension feel super soft one way and super heavy the other way.

I know it's a little unrelated, but I've been meaning to ask this, and seeing your studio has grown in terms of cool toys, reminded me. You have that one rig with the (3) 4k sony TVs, mostly I've seen you do racing games on that setup. I think you also did your helo video (with your pilot friend) on that. How does DCS and SC do on triple 4k? I imagine SC doesn't like it (but I'd love to be wrong), and DCS is decent now that we're doing multithreading. But I wanted to ask the guy who knows for certain because he has all the toys! I have (3) 1440p monitors in a span, and both games do well (or well enough in SC's case) with it, wondering if it was time to consider moving up to 4k or not.

  • @NOOBIFIER1337

Triple 4K on the 7900xtx is perfectly fine in DCS on MT. SC hovers just shy of 60FPS. Driving games mostly sit near 120hz.

Tbh i hard disagree with the VR pushers. VR is not better for DCS. Whats better is what works for you. Personally, I hated DCS in VR. Playing it with a high quality monitor and Tobii eye tracker is a way better experience. VR limits you a lot and needlessly strains your eyes for a minor minor "immersion" value.
