    Seemed there was a Lil too much flying a chopper like a fixed wing aircraft. You can swing the tail around fairly fast with the rudder petals, and tucking in behind a building hovering setting up an ambush.

    The problem is the combat already started. At those ranges staying still means death. And you have to take into consideration that they have weight. It isn't like a ubisoft game where you can just magic a helicopter into the perfect position with no experience. So in the time it would take for them to get in a hover in a good ambush point the opposition would be on top of them. Making the tactic useless in this situation. I saw one of them try it in one of the other helicopter videos and that's exactly how that went.

    @@hf117j that's because you need to get to their blindspot then hit cover and ambush. With an Apache you're better turning right with the right foot pedal while giving the main rotors more thrust, it's quicker that way

    @@hf117j I have many yrs in military helo experience, and competed in aerobatic RC helo competitions. The Huey is not as agile as the Apache or Blackhawk. Flaring is used slow the helo to make quicker turns, like 180s, allowing you to go backwards, but simultaneously dropping the nose, maybe 45 degree angle, to do 180 degree turns. But those combat Apaches are used to hover behind cover or concealment to ambush or engage targets. They use buildings and treetops. But the also fly in big circles. For gaming, I recommend try some acrobatic flying to get use to rotary wing aircraft. Do inverted rolls, barrel rolls, and quick turns to change flight direction using Flaring. Fly around a skyscraper keeping the nose pointed at the building, then increase speed (flying sideways).

  • @hf117j

    @@saltyfloridaman7163 Again. Ambushing by hovering is best used in LONG RANGE engagements. This close. Staying still means death. You rarely get in a blind spot. Though it does happen, it doesn't stay the case long enough to slip into a hover behind a building... that the other helicopter can just fly over or around and see you. Multiplayer isn't a movie. When you make mistakes the opposition will typically punish. And staying still with more lines of sight than you can keep a gun trained on is a mistake.

    Thanks to DCS. This game (and the previous "Lock-On") made me recognizing all kind of aircraft engine sounds. When there's a helicopter flying over my house, I immediately recognize it's an AH-64 or a Eurocopter or Augusta Westland from the police. They all got typical sounds. Ah-64's are flying regularly over my house. Several times a week, and sometimes even below 250ft. That low that Radarbox can't recognize the flight, lol. And most people complain about the noise, but I love it!

    Surprisingly, even with the advantage of a turret gun, Apache could not always oppose himself well. After all, the Hinds has a fixed gun and it is much more difficult for him to hit accurately. If Apache had to fight the Mi-24V with a movable machine gun or the Mi-28 with a turret gun, things would go very badly for Apache in general, one would have to count only on a successful hit. As for the UH-1H, it seems to me that it has frivolous weapons for this, only two miniguns and it is stupid to use it even against unarmored helicopters. Miniguns can only disable the tail rotor, but they are not easy to hit.

    Sadly you can't put the AH-64 against it's actual equal the Mi28. What I can tell you, when RAF Pilots were asked which battlefield attack chopper they wanted pre 2004, it was pretty unanimous they said the HAVOC. Despite British upgrades too targeting, avionics, the Longbow add-on and better performing/economical Rolls Royce Engines. Many British Pilots still have a real dread of facing the Mi28 and Ka-52.

    The Ka50/52 series was originally designed with an air-to-air 'anti-helicopter' role in mind. The Kamov dual rotor arrangement, relatively light weight and powerful engines were geared up for that role. The heavier Mi28 was always supposed to be the AH64 analogue The earlier Mi 24 'Hind' was essentially a type of chopper the West doesn't really have....a heavily armed squad transport chopper....carrying either 8 armed troops OR a full reload of weapons held internally.

    the traversing 30mm cannon is not as great in a dog fight as most people think, and it's relatively slow muzzle velocity and rate of fire makes it not nearly as useful as people think in a dog fight. honestly the Hind just needs to get it's nose around onto the apache, and it's game over. Can hit it at further range, and at similar weights the Hind is actually more powerful

    It's the pilot that's useless in a dogfight if they don't see the advantage of it. Factors you need to account for. If the gun can get an angle. Time it takes for gun to track. And timing the shot. Chasing may not benefit you with that gun. But if you're going side by side oncoming traffic style just orient your gun before the merge so you can just fire a split second before they cross. Anyone who find the capability to be a disadvantage is a massive idiot with no understanding of the equipment

    @@crazygmanssimstuff you do realize that the apache autocannon fires m789 ammunition right? It's dual purpose high explosive armor piercing 30mm. That's going to destroy any helicopter with 1-2 hits. The hind was only built to withstand .50 cal and can only withstand slightly larger calibers from over 800m away. The Hind's hit box is inaccurate and overall durability is much higher than real life. Further on this, the Apache was built to withstand 23mm cannons, it's armored for that on its entire fuselage, engine, nose, many parts across it's body, it's main and tail rotors were designed to flex and absorb the shock from incoming 23mm fire due to its unique composite rotor material. The hind would be at a very large disadvantage, it's fatter, slower, less armored, and less armed

  • @crazygmanssimstuff

    @crazygmanssimstuff

    @@saltyfloridaman7163 Hit box and damage model aside which we aren't privy to. The Apache is not armored in any practical way. It has no metal armor plateting, only kevlar armor in certain places to protect the pilots. The brochure saying it's "resistant" to 23mm is being extremely generous. Just like saying the cockpit is bullet resistant. It has redundant system, but the Hind actually has more in the ways of redundancy. Apache pilots on the fighter pilot podcast said themselves that it is not really armored, and that they use the sensors to stay safe. The gun on the Apache is vastly weaker then the 30mm on the Hind just google the round size and look at the rate of fire and muzzle velocity. Don't get me wrong it's still a 30mm and the Hind should only be able to take a few hits to non-vulnerable areas. The D model Apache is also the pig of the family when it comes to power and maunverability. Read accounts of the Apaches in Afgahistan and they had to shed weight and do rolling take offs as well in high and hot environments. The power difference between the 2 is not dramatic, and depending how they are loading out with fuel and weapons that can be brought even closer.

    Hind was never made for agility over battlefield. It was built out of an existing Mi-8 the same way Cobra was built out of an existing H-1 Huey. Except in a military fashion it became an aerial equivalent to a IFV as opposed to a flying tank which is what Cobra and Apache are. Result was a lumbering chopper with lots of presence, ability to deploy a detachment and support them, but wasn't all that hard to hit, and at high altitudes it suffered performance penalties. Russians learnt the lesson in Afghanistan and the proposed replacement for the lumbering and relatively sluggish Hind was meant to be a dedicated assault/ground attack chopper with high agility and much better protection. In terms of ability to survive losing tail, Ka-50 and Ka-52 win hands down, since they literally don't need a tail to fly, just like wings aren't really necessary for them either. It's also VERY VERY maneuverable with amazing rate of climb. Their contra-rotating rotors give them exceptional performance, stability and weapons accuracy.

PS: In my completely UNknowledgable opinion, it looks like you're dogfighting like fixed wing aircraft would. I imagine (based on no knowledge) that a chopper might be better at ducking out from behind buildings for brief shots or hovering behind a building having laid a trap for the opponent to passed around into view. Nice work non-the-less.
