Agusta Westland AW139 Start up and Take off

Спорт

A visiting Agusta Westland AW139 starts up and takes off from Modec Venture 11.
The start up was from cold, as such it takes some while to get going as all preflight checks are conducted.
Typically helicopters to offshore facilities do not shut down, with baggage and passenger transfers with rotors running.
This video was taken on board the Modec Venture 11 FPSO, some 200kms north of Karratha in Western Australia.
If you would like to see some more of the Modec Venture 11 FPSO, check out this video I put together;

    Worked on these in Prudhoe Bay Alaska for ERA helicopters . Just got a job working on them again for PHI , I like these machines . ERA had 4 of them in Alaska. 2 of them had the FIPS system ( Full Ice Protection System ) can't wait to work on them again.

    Is it just me, or can you actually see the curvature of the Earth in this video when you look out at the horizon? Not side to side, but if you try to imagine the water in the foreground as flat to the horizon you can see that the horizon would actually be higher in the sky if the Earth didn’t drop away in the distance.

    I believe this is more so the effect of the (cheap) lens in use which creates a slight curve top and bottom when zoomed fully out, the effect lessens as the helicopter lifts off and the horizon starts to come closer to the centre of the screen.

    I would guess there are quite a few pre take off checks that need to be done prior to take off. Temperatures, pressures, power levels all need to be verified and confirmed before they take off especially when starting up from cold. Taking off from a floating facility some 200km off the coast carries with it additional hazards that probably require even further checks and cross checks. Pretty much everything that is done prior to the wheel chocks being removed are start up check and tests. Everything after the wheel chocks are removed are pre take off checks until the pilots are happy and depart.

    Not sure about Bristows ops but I know that on PHI you usually have to get a clearance and set out your intentions so that should shit go down you will be reachable quickly. As far as pre flight checks on a 139 you and your right seat can get that done before you turn the rotors for the most part. These guys look like they are loitering waiting on a departure time or call.

    Risks are managed, it's quicker than going out there by boat. (45mins compared to 38hrs). Every Oil Rig and FPSO vessel has the ability to land, refuel and launch helicopters.
