Agnes Obel is a rare artist who combines classical musicianship with subtle electronics to create almost ambient songs with extraordinary poetry in her lyrics. Her album, Myopia promises to continue on a beautiful trajectory, and she's touring in 2020 with Dead Can Dance.
@Javiertr86
4 жыл бұрын
Her early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Myopia came out in 2020, I think she really came into her own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.

*Familiar:* In European folklore and folk-belief of the Medieval and Early Modern periods, familiars (sometimes referred to as "familiar spirits" or "animal guides") were believed to be supernatural entities that would assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic. According to the records of the time, they would appear in numerous guises, often as an animal, but also at times as a human or humanoid figure. The main purpose of familiars is to serve the witch or young witch, providing protection for them as they come into their new powers. (Source: Wikipedia) they presented the essence of this song so great, damn

Can you walk on the water if I, you and I? Be'Cause your blood’s running cold outside the familiar true to life Can you walk on the water if I, you and I? Or keep your eyes on the road and live in the familiar without you and I It glows with gates of gold to true life For our love is a ghost that the others can’t see It’s a danger Every shade of us you fade down to keep them in the dark on who we are (Oh what you do to me) This love is gonna be the death of me It’s a danger 'Cause our love is a ghost that the others can’t see We took a walk to the summit at night, you and I To burn a hole in the old grip of the familiar true to life And the dark was opening wide, do or die Under a mask of vermillion ruling eyes And our love is a ghost that the others can’t see It’s a danger Every shade of us you fade down to keep them in the dark on who we are (Oh what you do to me) Gonna be the death of me It’s a danger 'Cause our love is a ghost that the others can’t see

The smile at 1.28 and the change in vocals, wow.
The chorus has something Mysteriously Mesmerizing. Hard to put its Hypnotize in words. If there is anything like a Place beyond this World, the chorus is the tunnel that you experience to that place. It's a peak into another world that is far beyond our comprehension.
This is one of the best live performances I've ever seen. The whole band kills it. Not to mention the writing. It may be my favorite chorus of all time.

Agnes never fails. Such, an amazing artist-- the whole assemble
"The chorus, it was sort of “secret singing,” like a ghost singing. And then I used this pitch shifter to make the voice sound ghostly. I also wanted something that sounded a little digital, because I feel a lot of our love life today is taking place in the internet - it’s digitalized, in a way. I thought it would be nice if it had this digitalized, electronic sound to the voice in the chorus." While it may sound as if Obel is accompanied by a separate vocalist, the chorus for “Familiar” is actually comprised of pitched down and distorted versions of of Obel’s own layered vocals. Obel has experimented with altering her vocals before and tends to heavily layer her songs with separate recordings of her vocals.
