    Agnes Obel is a rare artist who combines classical musicianship with subtle electronics to create almost ambient songs with extraordinary poetry in her lyrics. Her album, Myopia promises to continue on a beautiful trajectory, and she's touring in 2020 with Dead Can Dance.

  • @Javiertr86

    @Javiertr86

    Her early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Myopia came out in 2020, I think she really came into her own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost.

    *Familiar:* In European folklore and folk-belief of the Medieval and Early Modern periods, familiars (sometimes referred to as "familiar spirits" or "animal guides") were believed to be supernatural entities that would assist witches and cunning folk in their practice of magic. According to the records of the time, they would appear in numerous guises, often as an animal, but also at times as a human or humanoid figure. The main purpose of familiars is to serve the witch or young witch, providing protection for them as they come into their new powers. (Source: Wikipedia) they presented the essence of this song so great, damn

    Amazing performance. She has such a beautiful voice. Takes me back to the place and time I first hears her. Was early in the morning, winter, just took my first sip of the mornings coffee and I heard that voice. I knew I would remember it.

    "The chorus, it was sort of “secret singing,” like a ghost singing. And then I used this pitch shifter to make the voice sound ghostly. I also wanted something that sounded a little digital, because I feel a lot of our love life today is taking place in the internet - it’s digitalized, in a way. I thought it would be nice if it had this digitalized, electronic sound to the voice in the chorus." While it may sound as if Obel is accompanied by a separate vocalist, the chorus for “Familiar” is actually comprised of pitched down and distorted versions of of Obel’s own layered vocals. Obel has experimented with altering her vocals before and tends to heavily layer her songs with separate recordings of her vocals.
