I have heard many opera singers. This is the first time i ever stopped what i was doing and just listened. What a gorgeous timbre and depth throughout her range.

The greatest mezzo soprano of our times!!!!

I have the album on record which I bought as a young girl - definitely one to treasure as Miss Baltsa is just the greatest mezzo.

I remember a splendid Maria Stuarda in Vienna (May 1989) with Mara Zampieri as Maria and Agnes Baltsa (Elisabetta) 2 tigresses !

Una voz especial, cantaba un repertorio mezclado entre soprano y mezzo, existen pocas voces de este tipo tan versátiles. Además lo cantaba todo dignamente, que eso es un plus añadido. Otra voz versatil es su compañera de cuerda Tatiana Troyanos, bravísima también.

Baltsa has remained a great singer and one of my favorites for many years. I heard her live only twice--Octavian, her debut role at the Met. She was to sing Carmen, and arrived at the Met having sung it successfully everywhere in Europe and was well-known via the Karajan recording for the part. But apparently she wasn't successful. She didn't stick around for the final few performances an I missed my chance. Then late in the day, I went to Florence to hear Christine Goerke sing Chrysothemis in ELEKTRA and Baltsa was the Klytemnestra. She she was astonishing and had all the notes. She was her way back to Vienna immediately following these 2007 performances where she was scheduled to sing Isabella in L'ITALIANA IN ALGERIA. She was a wonderfully versatile artist and sang just about every major mezzo (and some soprano parts too) in rep. I have all her recordings on CD. I love her singing of this soprano aria.

Well, i must say, this way better than i thought was gonna be! (i know i'm bad lol.). I just never thought Balsta ...Stuarda....o.O But...here it is :D hehe

I am still trying to locate the CD of her Arias album on EMI containing this recording. It was released in 1987 and has been out of print for many years now. It even has her Fiordiligi, Macbeth and Dido ...

@MastersoftheOpera I agree with you. I prefer lighter sopranos for this role as well, although I love Caballe in it. For the queen a dramatic soprano is appropriate. The score calls for a soprano, but she needs a very good middle register, it doesn't go very high. It is very nice when there's a clear difference between the voices of Maria and Elisabetta.

Well yes! Like many mezzos of today she's not a real mezzosoprano.. she's a soprano :).. a soprano with a developed chest voice :)
