It’s like he doesn’t know how to speak “dog.” I wouldn’t be surprised if he was “rescued/found/taken” from his mom and litter mates very early at 3-4 weeks and hand raised by humans who later abandoned him when he got too big to feed. Of course we will never know but Hector seems to understand humans better than doggy body language. I’m hopeful for him; with exposure, confidence and a good leader he will overcome the language barrier. What good boy!

One of the best episodes so far. You can see the slow desensitization, he's simply lacking the skills to interact in a playful way but he's actually learning super quickly. Both corrections made significant changes and you can tell he's just a dog that needs direction.

I would hazard to say that his trauma might not have even started during his street life, although that may have contributed to the way in which he chose to try and "solve" it once an issue did arise. It kinda sounds to me like it may have actually all began with that one first dog in the park who wouldn't back off or respect his boundaries or cues/warnings-because it sounds like the other dog kept stalking him for a while before things escalated. And because that situation DID escalate, then he just began to[ as a totally involuntary fight-flight-or-freeze response to that trauma] anticipate the possibilities of every new-dog meeting also escalating like that too, which in turn caused even more situations to escalate. But maybe I'm wrong. 🙂

I agree with Jaganaia because meeting another dog teeth first is not conducive to life on the streets. There’s no way this dog could have bullied every street dog he met. He wouldn’t have lasted to three years old.

this is verbatim my experience w my Mexican shelter dog a week after i brought him to NE. He was not the same dog I spent a week w in a shelter full of dogs and happily going on social walks around the island. He was 1 year at that dog park encounter, now he’s 3 ..and operates very much like this dog. Like you said, how do we create this on the real world? Is finding a board and train my best bet Beckman? No e collar, basic obedience, and group reactive training ..but i’ve shied away from the constant treat/positive reinforcement at home/walks to some strong language and redirects as seen in ur vids. I gotta get him safely (close) around other dogs to move forward i think…how? thank thank u for this video ..many similarities and I wish i lives closer to the Beckman pup oasis.

Saw someone in the dog park today who had a Malious and a German shepherd, I saw them practice your methods and was truly amazed. Their dogs had a few slip ups and with their corrections the dogs were able to calm down and just restart. It’s one thing watching your videos but seeing it practiced irl is totally awesome!

Wow, this video goes so deep. This dog deserves more credit than you think. If he has been living on the streets, then he was effectively a wild dog living amongst humans. No restraints and no training. Probably in a pack and living off his instincts, dealing with pack hierarchy etc without intervention. When he's met new dogs in the past it's been a possible fight every time, hence his hair up at the beginning, I'd call it hyper stimuli sensitivity, he's had to be alert and on guard on those streets. He's now having to adapt to how his new pack meets new dogs, restricted on a leash etc etc. And learn at 3 years old how to be a human dog. He's doing great 👍 Fascinating video Joel, thanks 👍

The power of the pack yet again. He relaxed once he realised he was in a stable pack. Tail dropped and he just strolled over to the pool enclosure following the others. He actually has brilliant doggy body language, showing his street heritage. He's got a bit of up front dominance but I put that down to the street in him too. No point cowering because first impressions count. His avoidance of triggers is very good with just the GSD slip up. The way he dealt with the two bratty ABs was excellent considering the pressure to meet them. He impressed me. I reckon he'd have a good rough house play with Prince given half a chance. A bit of gentle leadership and he'll settle right down. Looks like a great dog. He just needs some doggy mates to run with again.

I heard the female owner mention something like she would find themselves having him on a tight leash and the dog can feel it. As an owner of a reactive dog, I've learned that mindfulness is so important. You have to check in on yourself continuously if you're out on a walk to reset, shake out the tension, remind yourself that you're ok, the dog is ok, maintain the loose leash etc. Once you're a ball of tension, it's not going to be helpful. Thank you for another great video!

  • @weedhigh2564

    @weedhigh2564

    Жыл бұрын

reactive dogs usually have the issue that their leaders are insecure and the dog starts feeling the need to be in control and it does so the only way he know how. Like, the check ins you mention, thats adding pressure on both of you even if you do it in a calm manner the dog will sense it, its best not done at all. Just walk loose leash and if you dont feel tension on the leash you are ok and you simply keep walking, you feel pressure on the leash you stop walking. 1 trick that might help you, worked super fine for my younger dog, keep a few treats in the hand that holds the leash, usually left. so he can smell the treats in front of him, it will make him less likely to react to distractions and will help have him his focus on you so he will feed off your cues as you walk and wont be interested as much in everything around them. my younger one was super bad on the leash and once i started this method the results were instant for me, now i dont need treats nor leash anymore, i just give the command, put my hand in proper position and she heels like a boss without a care in the world.

I have a rescue street dog from Mexico and have found the exact reaction of the hair and stance at first meeting a dog . It makes sense when you know he was fighting for his food and other dogs fighting him for territory or pack status on the street. He's good too when the excitement declines.

It's called Bristling. I noticed that when he was wandering, investigating the Yrd. This was a Street dog essentially feral. It's All about survival for any and every stray / feral dog. Some are more feral meaning they interact less with people. I've seen feral dogs in upstate New York who hunt deers, packing up etc. Beautiful dog though. I don't think he freaked out. Isn't it a natrual reaction? Humans are the ones domesticating and training Them.

Man, I'm a sucker for street dogs. People have actually had to stop me from taking a couple home. They are indeed a ton of work. Very self reliant. If I can just give one tip to the owners: don't make it all about fixing him. The best way to teach a dog nothing is to try and teach it everything at once. Don't try to be at the finish already, that will make the journey slower and harder.

We have an ex street dog and I cannot agree more with this comment. Ours gets absolutely overwhelmed if we try and teach too much too fast and we got this wrong to start with. When we just let him settle down then focused on one thing at a time and just kept going on that until we had it. Slow and steady wins.

I got my boy (A Min Pin mix of some sort) from a rescue that saved him from a high kill shelter in Texas at the Rio Grande Valleys of Texas & Mexico, he was found on the street in an area near the border. He’s very young though, picked up off the street at an estimated 3 months old by animal control and then spent a couple days at their local high kill shelter, where he most certainly would have been put down. Then he spent another month with the rescue that picked him out of that shelter before he came to me at about 4 months old. So I’m still able to train him and shape his future. His age is what made us feel confident enough to apply to adopt him. While I admire people that do take the chance, I don’t think I’d be willing to adopt an older guy with that background. But if I was interested in an older guy with that background, I’d DEFINITELY do a board & train and allow a professional to work with him in a more controlled environment with undivided attention. I’d think that would give him the best chance at rehabilitation.

I wondered if this was just an automatic response to her simply not liking the process of having her feet cleaned, or if there was something deeper going on, should she be corrected, should I be worried of an escalated response, etc.

What would you call that "I'm going to smell you while forcing you to stand still", "bossy"? My Portuguese rescue (German Pinscher mix), raises hackles, stomps his feet, approaches while growling until he smelled the dog than he stops caring and goes back to the pit he was sunbathing in. It's like this: "don't mess with me" facade. "Don't move until I smelled you". Only at the initial meetings. I adopted him at 1.5 years old, had been living on the street or something. Indoors he's the sweetest. He gets all wound up, growly, reactive when a dog approaches. I can prevent it by either interrupting him or giving him the "quiet" command when his head goes down.

My dog was a street dog. That was being fed by my neighbor. He would lay in her yard or mine. My family and i never bothered him. He wasn't the aggressive with us never tried to bite or growl. People in our neighborhood misunderstood him. So they started yelling at him grabbing sticks and waving it to him. Threatening him when he never did anything to him of course after a while he would bark at them until they left where our houses were at. I never interacted with him because i didn't want to to get attached to him. When he barked and followed people i would yell at him "NO COME HERE NOW!" and he always listened to me. I don't know why he listened to me but he did. After that people thought he was my dog. one day animal control came to my door because people said he was mine he wasn't so i said no. I told them my neighbors might want him. But they couldn't couldn't keep him. I begged my sister to let me keep him. after all i had asked if he would be put down and they said yes if he didn't get adopted. So i did my sister let me keep him. I named him max and had to tie him up. Unfortunately he killed a dog as he was a escape artist. I still don't know why after all he did hang out with our neighbors dog. I noticed he was protective of children right away that other dog was around children. I don't know if that dog attacked mine and he defended himself. It was a Chihuahua and he had been around Chihuahua one of his friends was a Chihuahua. I had him for one month at the time. Unfortunately i had to put him in a dog kennel a big one. He is a escape artist and he escaped so many times i have since moved from that house and he has a yard by himself even if it is small it's big enough for him to run around. I have a Chihuahua puppy that i rescued she is like a hyper toddler and he is like an old man. He does look at her then at me and gives me a face of what is wrong with her. He not very interested in her. but i know he knows that i know that when he doesn't want he doesn't have to. He is good with people he knows that if i say it's okay. It's completely okay. He doesn't like being inside at all so I'm still working on that. I still have a lot to teach him but he has changed into a marshmallow with me.

Do you take online consultations? I have a 1y old french bulldog with some aggressions problems, all started when he was biten at 7 months. Agression is only towards young male dogs like himself, doesn’t seem like a fearful dog looks like a dominance thing, but i couldnt tell it for sure as im not a dog trainer

What kind of muzzle is that? I have tried 3 different kinds for my Rhodesian Ridgeback and he doesn't like the strap that goes between his eyes, but the one that doesn't have it he can pull off. He is a similar size and build as this dog, he is not nearly as tall as Mesha!

Hound of the Baskervilles am pretty sure. They can still eat, drink, pant, bark, take treats, etc with it on. The goal is to condition the muzzle like over a week 's time so they have no desire to get it off. I smeared cream cheese, put treats in it without doing anything else at first. So just the site of it they think oh yeah, that's not bad. Also, you never want them to feel bad about wearing it. Such a handsome boy, pretty girl, etc. When you do take it off, want to do it not right after they fight it because then they think, oh if I just do this, they take it off. My Dobes love their muzzles. Teach all my students to get your dog used to a muzzle, especially if you travel with them. If something does happen, the first thing a vet will do is put a muzzle on them, so why freak the dog out twice - once with the muzzle and once with whatever the vet has to do to the dog. Hope that helps. I also take a week to get them used to a gentle leader if needed.

Some dogs, like this one, do not communicate with the tail. No wagging. I never knew if my husky was being "top girl," or if she simply didn't wag for dogs. It got her bitten a few times, but I never felt she was trying to dominate. And then a friend's dog does the same, and gets hurt badly by bigger dogs. What to do?

yes for dog rehabilitation but alas not all have the same reaction, because some last around 6 months and others more depending on the aggressiveness, the rehabilitation, the people, the dog's way and temperament and also the age period by relation to the aggressive was given to him, in addition to confused people the aggressiveness and the hyperactivity even growling in the amuse in any dog but especially in big dog, and lots of other things come into play to make dog to bite, I also experienced because re-educated myself my dogs my 1st I was 15 years old from a former fight more than 20 years ago with his girlfriend of the same breed and maternal dominant in bull & terrier yet I had never learned to re-educate from fighting dog to living room dog, but is not given to the world because it is very complex

With the shepard it almost looked like a startled "you threaten me" reaction. Cause they was both side by side head to head and when they both noticed each other he probably felt like it was trying to be dominate over him. Just what I thought of that's moment.

When a Dog is standing in front of you while you back away with them upon meeting, is it a feeling of unease or overstimulation for the dog? Or is it more protective? Does it depend on the dog?

This was fascinating for me. I'm in the UK and have a reactive Golden Retriever rescue from Bosnia. He's not aggressive we don't think but has a similar issue to Hector in that he has an "automatic" reactive response to every dog he sees, even at 70 metres (210 feet) away - barking and getting more panicked the closer the other dog gets. I've not let him to get close to another dog (except my other dog who he met with no issue at all on day 1) as I don't know what he'd do up close to a strange dog. Your set up Joel is perfect, meeting through the fence/gate. I'm hopefully doing something similar with my trainer tomorrow and Luca is meeting her Rottweiler up close wearing a muzzle ! I'm keeping everything crossed his reaction is similar to Hector's. Tense for the first few mins, then calm and accepting of the other dog, ending in hopefully some more relaxed body language. My only question for Hector is his tail position. Is it permanently up like this or was it tension making it stand up just during the session? He looks stiff throughout with a high tail, so maybe some suppression of his tension? My dog was in an open plan dog shelter with 30 other dogs with no issues, but they now think he was maybe suppressing his reactivity? Who knows for sure? I'm just hoping Luca has the same level of "success" tomorrow. This video has given me hope. Hector's body language wasn't perfect, but he coped and that's a start. Wish me well for tomorrow with Luca.

I love your videos and will watch all of them. Much appreciated!!!!!! I have an adult doberman pinscher that acts the same way but with so much worse reaction. Dogs coming close are a threat to her. Off leash, if some dog come from behind she would keep running a little bit and turn back and attack. Off leash, if some dog come right into her face, she would attack directly. On leash, I take her to meet dog, she barks and tries to attack, I use your method, pop her leash then grab her back and make her sit. She would sit down. I tell her to go meet again, she would be like "Wait, I can't attack? I won't go meet." I force her to meet and the whole process repeats. The correction is not having any effect after 10/20 times of doing this. My guess is she is tooooo uncomfortable/sensitive and she is too out of her mind? She wont smell other dogs or let other dogs near her. The only time when dog can sniff her, is when I hold her collar and chin and make her sit. She still barks and tries to jump away when being sniffed. Is it okay to keep doing this until she is more comfortable? Or will it make her more anxious? I am thinking that I need to get her used to being close to dogs before any correction will click. Any suggestions? I practiced your other trainings and they all work on my dog and we have tremendous progress on everything. I just need some help on dog aggression behavior.

I saw your shock collar video and now think that the previous owner probably has used shock collar on dog aggression. I dont know how he uses or when he uses. But I do know he had those shock collars that shock on barking (not e-collar). The previous owner passed away. I am sad now knowing that the dog may not be good again with dogs... She is so good in other ways and has made tremendous progress in discipline. I will keep taking her to dog park on leash and at least she will get used to the smell and the sight. If there is any suggestion, please let me know. Much appreciated. You are the best trainer.

Have you discussed your dog's nervousness with a vet which specializes in anxiety and behavior disorders? My German shepherd dog takes Prozac due to her insecurity and reactivity. She bit a dog 4 months after I adopted her. She also charged at two dogs. We do not want any more if these incidents. With the med, training and helping her relax on daily long walks she is making much better choices and gaining self confidence when seeing other dogs from a distance. No more going bizerk. But she may never be a dog that can be trustworthy. One day at a time. The med may help your dog have better days?
