were you being serious or sarcastic? after this scene of them talking, there was a long fight between neo and those and many other agent smiths. the name of the video, which had a "thank you" in it, and with it being less than 3 minutes long, was pretty much telling you what kind of a scene it would be. however, neo and trinity came off as assholes in the scenes with that young recruit who wanted to join them. they didn't even give him a chance, and trinity made a really offensive comment to neo about what others say about someone's life you save, as if she was implying that he should've let him die instead, and that was really messed up. those few scenes cast those main characters in a bad light and mad them look like they were not good people.

steve kosman I was serious. I love reasonably smart dialogue between a protagonist and an antagonist. It sends shivers down my spine. Like when Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty talk. Scenes like this are amazing to me, and I love them.

Max D. Same here. I actually enjoy scenes where the protagonist and the antagonist are engaging not only with action but with words and ideals as well. It gives more impact to their clash as it makes it more about the simple stupid "Good" vs "Evil" but two people with different views of the world forced to eliminate the the other to get what they desire most.

Emiscary1 I think thats why he went nuts. first, his ambition to kill neo, that fails, then his maffia-like boss says, come back here, so i can delete you. he refuses because he still wants to kill neo. so he replicates himself to give himself better odds, then he ends up with so many like himself he can't balance his own mind anymore, and he flips out, gets a god complex, and basically, becomes god in the matrix section of the machine world. boy is his creator ticked. so ticked in fact he makes a deal with neo to get rid of him once and for all.

He really does, just look at how he describes humanity in the interrogation scene with Morpheus. He describes them as a virus or a cancer that inhabits an area, multiplies until all the natural resources in the area are used up and then spreads to a different areat to start the process over. Then when he becomes free, notice how he does almost exactly the same thing. He finds people in the Matrix to turn into copies of himself. He keeps doing this until all the people in the area are Smiths. Then he moves to a new area and starts turning the people there into Smiths until the end of Revolutions where basically the entire population of the Matrix has been turned into Smiths. Whether intentional or not, he basically turned himself into an exact copy of what he believed humanity to be.

You know what I love about this scene? The whole conversation is rich with detail under the guise of polite talk. Neither Neo nor Smith are exchanging insults, talking about how either could be a good or a bad man and how they aren't so different. Smith says facts, what he believes and Neo doesn't start telling him he's wrong despite being opposed to his ideas, he listens. There's no offer to join Smith nor Neo, there's none of that stuff you might expect from the hero and villain talking. It's a conversation, not a fight although that happens after the conversations and that's what I think Hero to Villain conversations lack in a lot of fiction these days. Nothing overly aggressive about the conversation, Smith was sharing what's happened to him and why he's doing what he's doing and he's not attempting any "join me" deal. It's very well done and I think the mass amount of Smiths do their job in symbolizing what Smith is doing. I think the actor played him very well and to this day his performance of Agent Smith is something that's stuck with me. When I was young, I cared only for the action but when I grew up and rewatched the Matrix, I realized the richness that was there the entire time, this scene being an example. This is just what I think though, you all could be different about it all.

And this scene is, paradoxically, a showcase of how FLAWED (though still quite good) Reloaded is. Look at this awesome scene, with Hugo Weaving's pitch perfect delivery. Now imagine if the entire subplot with Bane either wasn't there or was revealed in a different way. Imagine if this scene was the FIRST one to introduce the concept of multiple Smiths. Imagine the wide open mouths of everyone in the theater. Fuck, when I watch Revolutions, I might try to pull off my own fan edit for personal use simply because of this one scene.

Listening to Smith talk is great. I think the first film has his best dialogue except for when in this scene. He said " I watched you die, with a certain satisfaction I might add." But his intro with Morpheus when he said "The great Morpheus." And he replied back with, " And you are?" "Smith, Agent Smith." You all look the same to me. Then the interrogation was the best, I swear. he hits all key points about humanity and the human race. How we are basically a freaking virus.

Yeah the whole thing about them being agents and what you said it is pretty spot on. Humans are the virus and the Agents or programs are the "cure". From the Matrix. He is a one of kind villain. It's rally hard to find a really unique one. The last one I found was in an anime called psycho pass on netflix. The guy's name was Shogo Makishima. Find it creepy and cool that an anime character had the same likes in literature as me and philosophy.

Ironic. The matrix that we live in pushes us down by drawing out the worst part of us and feeding on that. It has utterly conned humans into thinking that we are less than we truly are. You and I and every human being are Gods. We have been and will always be. We are the creators. We are the supreme consciousness so many project outside of ourselves. It is dripping with irony how you are watching a show about humans in the matrix while succumbing to the lie we're told in this matrix. We are more than you and I could ever conceive. It's time to wake up, brothers and sisters! Free yourselves.

The Machines created him and the rest of the agents to monitor the matrix and gave them the power to rewrite the programming of their world. A sense of freewill. Agent Smith, i think, was given just a bit more to lead the other agents. Hence, he's a form of AI. When Neo destroyed him, he realized it and went his own way. Full freewill.
