    Dear Mr. Whitt, This is in response to your reply to my comments. I truly respect your ability to present your lessons. I wish I were as fluent. It was not my intention to even suggest that I would be a better teacher. I will always be learning as well. It's the same for all teachers. We never cease to learn. I offer my congratulations on all your presentations. I have found them to be the most "understandable" of all the math videos that I have viewed. Please continue because I believe that with your continued assistance there will be so many more successful math students. Sincerely yours, Alex.

    at 5:26 aren't the answers 40 and 38 since it said present age and since you added six at the start you should minus 6 to 46 to make it the present age. Correct me if i'm wrong.

  • @FortBendTutoring

    @FortBendTutoring

    9 жыл бұрын

    The video is correct because the variable "x" represents his present age. Adding 6 to "x" gave us his age in 6 years. Therefore, solving for "x" is the answer we need. Subtracting 6 from "x" gives an incorrect result because in six years he won't be twice as old as she was 6 years ago. Adding 6 to 46 yields 52 which is twice as much as (32 - 6) which is 26.

    Hi, I have revisited some of the videos that I have studied .With the last question of Connie and Linda, the equation X-15 = 2/3X is somewhat confusing. The reason I think they do not make equation is that Connie must have been younger when she wed. So (X-15) = (2/3 X - some years)?

  • @FortBendTutoring

    @FortBendTutoring

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Tango Siera Connie is younger (30 years old) while Linda is 45 years old. Remember that Connie had to be 2/3 Linda's age when she married. Therefore, the problem was solved correctly.

  • @treeing

    @treeing

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Fort Bend Tutoring It is clear that Connie is 2/3 Linda's age. But it looks like that moment when she was 2/3 Linda's age is not the same as present ( x-15 ). The time when 2/3 Linda's age and the time of x-15 ( now ) does not equate?

  • @FortBendTutoring

    @FortBendTutoring

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Tango Siera It is also clear that Connie will always be 15 years younger than Linda whether it's in the past or in the present. The difference of their ages is 15. However, there is only one moment in time that Connie's age is 2/3 Linda's age.

  • @treeing

    @treeing

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Fort Bend Tutoring Thank you. Can I ask , if Linda's age X=45 the formula 2/3X =X-15 comes to 30=30, But if, for example, X=30 -> 20=15. If X= 60 -> 40=45. Why does this happen?

  • @FortBendTutoring

    @FortBendTutoring

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Tango Siera 30=30 is a true statement which means the answer (x=45) is correct. The others values are not equivalent because they are incorrect. Keep in mind that the answer to the word problem is 30 years of age when Connie wed.

    In order to multiply Lanecia’s age six years ago, I’m placing that value in parentheses. Afterwards, I can then show I’m finding twice that amount by placing a 2 in front of the parentheses. Therefore, finding two times (Lanecia’s age six years ago).

    This is a language and comprehension issue (more than likely). Go back to the beginning of the problem where I defined the variables. “x” stands for Maurice’s age today. Since both of their ages (today) total 78, then Lanecia’s age today is equal to 78 - x. From there the problem is comparing a future age to an in the past. In six years, Maurice’s age is represented by x + 6. Six years ago, Lanecia’s age is represented by 78 - x - 6. If you’re going to double Lanecia’s age six years ago, you need parentheses so that any multiplication you do is applied to her age six years in the past. Thus, we get 2(78-x-6) which represents twice her age six years ago.

    Asian version: George's age = ? , pick 1 letter from English alphabet: 2/5a - 4 = 6 or 2/5g - 4 = 6 (this is a more logical choice: George begins with the letter g/G*) or 2/5z - 4 = 6. 5/2(2/5g - 4 = 6) g - 10 (--> +10) =15 (--> +10) g = 25 *In most of Asia, somehow people will be taught A/a to Z/z but will remember & then write it as a/A to z/Z, Maybe due to Hebrew, Arabic or Chinese, etc... which had writing orientating from right to left?

    "They met 6 years ago." The negative 6 should be outside the parenthesis since it's not apart of Lencia's age, which would change the equation and how the equation is solved. X+6=2(78-x)-6. Ans: Maurice's age = 38, and 78-38 = 40, which is Lencia's age. I believe 38 and 40 are the right answers.

  • @FortBendTutoring

    @FortBendTutoring

    The negative six belongs within the parentheses because 78-x is her current age which is not what you’re comparing. You want Lanecia’s age 6 years ago so you must include it within so that it’s multiplied by 2. Twice her age six years ago, not twice her current age minus six.

    I'd like to point out a mistake you made in the problem where you got Lanecia and Maurice's age. The equation should not be x + 6 = 2(78 - x - 6) but instead should be x + 6 = 2( 78 - x ). This is because the question says that in 6 years, Maurice will be twice the age of Lanecia 6 YEARS AGO, meaning you do not change 78 - x. This can further be proven when we add your final answer of Maurice's age by 6, so 46 + 6 = 52, and as you can see, 52 is not twice the amount of 32.

    +Jian Luteria Hello Jian! The problem is correctly setup and solved. Maurice is 46 and in six years he will be 52. Lanecia is 32 and six years ago she was 26. Doubling Lanecia’s age six years ago yields a value of 52 which verifies the result.

    in Test 2, there's some few errors? "in 6 years, maurice will be twice as old as lanecia was when they met 6 yrs ago. if their ages total 78, then how old are they now?" my equation: Lanecia x Maurice "twice as age of lanecia, 6yrs ago" 2x-6 x+2x-6=7 is my equation. and the answer is Lanecia 28, Maurice 50. if you go back to 6yrs ago, meaning minus 6, Lanecia 22, Maurice 44. so that Twice as the age? please verify my explanation. :D

    Your result is incorrect. According to your answer, in six years Maurice will be 56. When they met 6 years ago, Lanecia would be 22 and twice her age is 44 not 56. Therefore, your answer doesn't satisfy the question. The solution and process provided in the video is correct.

    The answer in the video is correct which is Maurice is currently 46 and Lanecia is 32. Therefore, in six years Maurice will be 52. Subtracting 6 years from Lanecia's age (32-6) gives a difference of 26. Multiplying 26 times 2 equals 52 which is exactly the age Maurice will be in 6 years. So the result and process both check out in the original problem.

    Dear Mr. Whitt. I am a MS math teacher. I will recommend your tutorials to all my students. I do wish, however, that you would begin eliminating the phrases "ladies and gentlemen", "just like that" and "Done and Done". I don't believe you need the woman's introduction either. Finally, please speak a bit slower so that students don't have to use the pause button. I do know that you are limited by KZread's time restriction.

    Hello Alex! Thanks 4 your suggestions! However, I'm a terrible student. Can you please create your own free math tutorial KZread channel so that I may learn from your examples? I've only taught over 25 years in MS, HS, and college and have so much 2 learn still. Just send me a link to your videos so that I can see clearly how it should be done. Thanks!

    The reason is to eliminate all decimals from the equation. It’s not a necessity, but I prefer to solve equations without decimals. Check this video out for more examples of this process: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZKxplrKbgrm3l6Q.html
