OMG Thank you! I have been struggling with my Nikki carb for months. Rebuilt, generic replacement, put a manual choke on it, and I couldn't get it to stop surging. Bought a $15 set of jet drill bits on amazon and now it runs perfect! Thanks Teryl!

For those of you that didn't pay close attention to the video, you can clearly see the shafts are completely different. The choke and throttle shaft linkages hook up differently on the aftermarket carb (which you can clearly see in the video). That is because the aftermarket carbatrator is for a different engine. After a lengthy search a direct Walbro replacement carb was found. There’s a link to it in the description. You can still use this video as a way to troubleshoot how to make a carb work that isn’t the right one. Now There’s Yur Dinner!!

I had to fix a 1980's Craftsman edger with a Tecumseh 3hp engine with a diaphragm pump type carb that is unavailable in most places or to expensive to buy. I replaced it with a bowl type carb with the same choke and throttle plate set up as the old one. It was for a newer Tecumseh 3hp to 5hp engine and it worked great. Matching it up with the pictures on the innerscreen was the hard part. Thanks Taryl, good video.

Trick to accurately sizing bits is to use the smooth shank as a gauge. I drill jets by gripping the shank in visegrips then spinning the jet between thumb and forefinger, then after the bit breaks through slide the jet up and down a couple of times to deburr the hole. I've done this with motorcycle carb low speed jets since the 1980s and just now got into Briggs because I want more power from my mower. If you mix up your jet drills use a micrometer or the very handy Harbor Freight digital calipers. (They're accurate too, and let me leave my expensive Tesa and Mitutoyo in the machine shop.) Excellent video!

I bought one of those POS , said it was for a 14-17 hp I was working on a Briggs 15.5. it ran almost as good as the first time you put the carb. back on. I kind of thought that it would have to be drilled out. But I do not have bits that small. Now I see you had to drill out for the butterflies. Kind of glad now I rebuilt the old one. I got 13.5 I will try this on. One mower I had came with the Nikki carb. it gave me Nothing but trouble. Had it cleaned and rebuilt. But it never ran right. As luck would have it I got an old blown engine with a Walbro carb. on it. So I rebuilt it and put it on and it worked.

Lol. I agree with the expiration dates on consumables, but when I worked for the Air Force they would take it away the second it went out of date regardless. Trouble is, stuff would almost be out of date by the time you got it in from supply so you would be lucky to use it for a couple of months. Just like tools that need calibrating. It's good today but at one second after midnight, forget about it or get wrote up. hehe.

Thanks for the great idea on drilling out the main jet. I purchased a used 2009 Troy Bilt Super Bronco 48" mower. The carb on it wasn't original and I could tell it is a cheap China knockoff. The engine is a Kohler SV600 Courage 20HP. It ran terrible just like the mower in this video. The jet isn't removable so I just drilled it and it is running great now!

Hi taryl, you could try to buy a metric REAMER for 10.00 buck at mcmaster and ream the holes .measure your shaft with your dial calipers to get the exact size of the shaft.reamer come in straight cut and spiral {that's for holes that arn't solid all the way through.reamers come in sizes by .001. example 1/4 in = .250 ...so you can get .248 or 249 or oversize at 251 or 252 ect. you'll have less air leaking with the right fit. great vids.

So much easier when you could adjust the main jet screw especially if you going to cut deep grass and you need to make it just a bit richer to keep it running smooth and cool the cylinders and prevent detonation or valve burring and all that.

Hey Taryl, I always crack up watching your videos, I was hoping that maybe you had a video about another aftermarket carbatrator. This is on a 21 hp B&S that is surging and I really hate that it pops all the time. As with you the main jet on this one is too large for the drill bit set that I had purchased after watching this video. Can the low idle jet be this issue with this one that needs to be drilled out?? I am able to slightly increase the choke and it runs fine but then actually increases speed????

I have a Nikki carburetor that was on there and it wasn’t running very well, so I bought another Dickey carburetor and it runs good, but it still has a little pop. I have adjusted the valves nothing better. I did buy a Walbro carburetor from Briggs & Stratton to swap it out because I’ve been told that that is the fix. What I don’t understand is the high speed adjustment. I think you could run much smoother like the one in this video but I just can’t seem to get it there any advice? Thanks!

I have a grey 2006 Craftsman LT1000 16hp Intek, very similar to this mower. Mine has a factory Walbro carb, looks like Briggs 594593 is the replacement carb for mine, which appears to have the exact same throttle shaft hookups and everything as this mower did. Likely you would hardly have to do anything to that one to swap in place of a Nikki in this. I can't imagine you'd have to do much to run a 16hp carb on a 17.5hp.

If the engine is surging without load why would you not increase the low speed jet diameter? I was just working on one of those Nikki carburetors on a 13.5 horsepower and the throttle butterfly is nearly completely closed at idle so the main jet would have no effect even at higher speed without load on my engine. I increase the size of the hole for the low speed jet and then I was able to use the adjustment idle screw and give enough gas to stop the surging. I did not touch the main jet yet. I'll have to see how the mower dies under load.

Hmm I wonder if I could get this setup to work on those new xt1 that cub cadet out out with those junky 6 carbs? I've had quite a few of them go south and those Nikki carbs ain't cheap to replace

Bought a cheap Amazon replacement carb to salvage a Sears/Briggs generator that had been submerged in flood water and sat for a year. Original carb was toast, but engine still rotated. Replacement carb ran too rich, but let me test engine for an hour to make sure it wasn't going to blow up before I spent more money on it. Bought correct OEM carb for $100 and it ran perfect. Generic carbs are okay, but aren't an exact match. I had a time constraint, Harvey was coming, so I shelled out for the OEM part. Otherwise, I would have experimented with drilling out air passages to bleed in more air. It's a generator, not the space shuttle, and only needs to run good at one RPM.

I installed a new carb on my mower but it always surges at full no matter where the adjustment screw on the bottom is. The fuel filter and lines are clean, but I don’t know what’s wrong.

This channel is a hoot! Thanks for all the great advice and comedy! Do you think something like this would work for a Briggs & Stratton generator I’m working on? I’ve rebuilt the Nikki carb, but it still won’t run.
