After the Wall: The children of German Reunification | DW Stories

On October 3, 2015, Germany celebrated 25 years of unity. Just like the infants born in 1989-90, the reunified country has come of age. At 25, you might have already achieved something in life. Or you might have already failed. Or you might have just left for pastures new. But what exactly drives this generation of young Germans? What world do they move around in? How do they see the future? And what’s their take on the fall of the Berlin Wall and German reunification? "After the Wall" looks into the lives of those who don't remember the Berlin Wall. From KZread star to mayor, from Wine Queen to aspiring monk: a snapshot of the zeitgeist and lifestyles that are as diverse as this generation itself.

I being Mexican American and having lived in Germany as a Soldier and Civilian during the East West Iron curtain knew that it could not last. I love Germany and the beautiful and powerful Language. I was treated better in Deutchland than in my own country by everyone I met. I made it my business to learn the language. My admiration for German women is such that they are not only strong, motivated with a strong sense of pride but also the most beautiful women I have ever seen. God bless Germany and I only hope to return back to my home away from Texas, Erlangen.

This is the typical problems of the children who parents were living in East Germany. Children always learn from their parents. After the fall of the wall, those children from the former East Germany couldn't learn from their parents, because their parents have never lived in the free world before. The parents couldn't give their children advices either due to lack of experience, thus those children were confronted with too many options. We called these children the lost generation and many of them aren't very successful in their lives, as they've to explore the world without the guidance of their parents. Unfortunately few of my friends belong to the group.

Gen Xer's as a whole look back to the 1970's, 80's and 90's with nostalgia. For the world has gone backwards in many ways since. Some things are better but they are overshadowed by the cloud we all live under now.

the guy's an exemple of the "generation 25": kids born between 1989 and 1990. he wasn't the most affected by the reunification, but he still witnessed its effect, and is influential enough to be relevant. I guess that's their point ?

It is immoral to keep people in isolation. Doing this encourages the desire to be free, especially if one has an inquisitive mind. Why should they be limited by a wall because someone who is probably dead by now said so? I'm glad that walls like this came down at the resounding majority. We are not supposed to be caged. Not even majestic animals of every species were not created to be caged. Those that do so do it as a symbol of status & show the rest of us just how insecure they actually are. Leave the innocent beasts of the wild in the wild. Leave those that have a right to freedom stay free. That Donald 'Melonhead' Trump ought to take a few pages out of this history book. Oh I forgot! He's too thick to think of anyone other than himself. God help us all. His reasoning for this over priced, idiotic, ludicrous wall is one conceived from his need to leave some tangible evidence of his legacy. His stupidity will be hard pressed to forget smh! I don't think he's going to make the guiness book of records but then there's a likelyhood that he could. It won't be for that wall either, lmao! Let's synergize him out of the white house before it becomes just another brothel. That guy has unresolved issues! Apparently he resembles the 'a-typical white middle class america' so if this is true I don't hold out much hope for the country. We all know that it's owned by china now anyway. The russians are hanging in a close 2nd place, which is probably why he is hanging off their shirt tails. For 'melon head, they're white, he understands what they're saying because he has his own personal interpreter, plus they're related through marriage and they are the only ones other than the asians that can build war heads.

Im so grateful this documentary also focused on the Catholic faith. Germany was a bastion of Christianity in Europe. I hope the young generation in Germany find their Christian faith again. I hate to see an Islamized Germany. Im sorry but I can not be politically correct when it comes to Islam.

Well to correct the man in the beginning, yes Germany would not be so free (as a whole) but it would be far from a poor country. Infact had the East and West not unified then West Germany would be the worlds largest economy today. East was also doing farely well if you compare it to the rest of the USSR. The East would not be free, no, and would not be a rich country by any stretch of the imagination. But West Germany would be the strongest, largest and probably richest economy on the planet. So... #FeelTheBern
