I tried to watch it and would become engrossed but then the hard rock music would be played and break the spell. Is it truly case that modern viewers have to impose the present on the past-it's like someone playing a1920's jazz score on a futuristic sci fi series.

Historically yes though there was a gang that did go by that name the exact events that occur in the show are exaggerations or made up. It’s called historical fiction and it’s a popular genre.
