    Hang on, hang on. Granny Smith WAS able to do the high dive. She mentions that doing the trick "takes a toll on the hindquarters" indicating that eventually she stopped because she decided she couldn't do it anymore. Considering all the other things we've seen her do throughout the show, it's believable that she's still in relatively good shape. After all, she does live in a more physical society where ponies walk everywhere. Plus she lives on a fully functioning farm. Then again, I thought it was supposed to exaggerate the "if you believe you can" idea of the tonic. It's one thing to have a young physically able pony suddenly decide to stop doing something they used to love then discover the "crutch" they started using is just water. But if you have someone who you think "hey wait, it really MUST be the tonic!" only to discover the tonic is nothing it puts a bigger emphasis on Applejack's struggle to say something and possibly not want to hurt Granny on the other hand, it's all a lie.

    Can I just say, Silver, there is actually a name for what you are in this episode. A hippalectryon is a Greek mythical creature, with the front of a horse, but the difference between you and this, is the back is that of a rooster. So they have much nicer looking tails. I want to see fan art of Silver Quill as a hippalectryon now.

    I actually wouldn't want Big Mac to start talking now. He's been quite well established as a quite guy that just works hard and keeps to himself, it wouldn't seem right for him to suddenly start talking. I also think it's more effective to develop characters without them talking much or even at all, Gromit, Charlie Chaplin and Edward scissor hands for examples.

    Aside from Filli Vanilli, Applebuck Season, Hearts and Hooves Day, and the episode with the CMC finding news stories, he never says more then what he's known for. And I agree he's fine with just that. Having him actually talk more then a extreme situation which requires it would ruin him.

    I agree to Big Mac being a quiet character. He only talks when it's important, like in Applebuck season and other episodes. He'll state his opinion only when it's needed. He has no real reason to say much more, especially if his opinion was already stated by someone else and all he needs to do is agree with a "yup".

    For those of you who are fussing about Mage's negativity with the episode, I have two words for you; lighten up. She has something called an "Opinion" and I find it very immature that you're all getting on her back, implying that she's ruining the review with her negativity. Yes Silver is positive with his work. I think every once in a while there has to be something different. If this was another positive review from another guest star, it would've been too repetitive to the point where viewers would lose interest. Aside from that, if a lot of us are looking for flaws, we do it to encourage the writers to improve themselves. Not make themselves look bad. Just because we're negative or addressing flaws, that doesn't mean you should cloud your head with hatred because you didn't agree with that review. For all else, take it as a benefit of the doubt. So in short, cut her some slack, and give her a break.

    I also concur, as much as I love SilverQuil for his unique take on episodes and his humor, I sometimes feel that he's a little too easy on some of the parts I take issue with and I see it as a nice contrast to have the co-reviewer be the one to point out the flaws. It beats him arguing with himself or a slide-version of himself and it makes each new episode different which I enjoy. Part of me wishes he'd settle with one co-reviewer but I enjoy how the different views bring out the best in each video.

    This review is like the episode, the overall story was decidedly average but there are lots of small moments that keep me entertained throughout. At least it didn't leave me annoyed like some episodes. Characterization & ending was also grand, Mage is just super adorable (though was hoping for a bigger glimpse of Lethal Aurora...). Finally, somepony agrees with my interpretation of Flim & Flam, most Bronies only see them as businessponies but forget their persona, yes, they're intelligent & can make product that works, but the way they use them are simply conniving. 2:40 Have you read MLP IDW comics #9 & #10? They're awesome depth into Big Mac's psyche 4:15 I think it was the nuclear rocks-plosion in Maud Pie O_o 5:30 Recreational fishing @ Catch & release.

    My thoughts on the 'This guest is awful' discussion---- I agree with what some have said: Her OC's design is great. That is one gorgeous unicorn. As for Mage herself... I'm torn. I agree that she seems to struggle with English, and that buys her a fair bit of slack in my book; multi-lingual people always impress me. Still, from moment to moment during the episode rundown, I went from sort of liking her to actively DISliking her, then back again. It was all very uneven, and therefore not an easy watch. I never hated her, most of the time I was more or less okay with her, but ultimately I didn't go subscribe to her channel. All that being said, I appreciate Silverquill's efforts to expose people to members of the community they might not otherwise see, and hope to see more of it in the future. And if Mage shows up again on this or another channel, I'll still watch, to see if she's improved.

    Etaukan I completely agree with many of the points you brought up; however, I believe we should keep in mind that one does not always know if she is multilingual or has a speech impairment like myself. I can think and write English as anyone else would but when I try to speak it, my stutter and slurring keeps people from understanding me. Another thing, perhaps she is just beginning to learn English which would explain why she would struggle. My older brother if currently learning a new language and has for the past five years and still struggles. What I suppose I am trying to get at is that we don't always know what is going on with someone and shouldn't jump to conclusions. I very much enjoyed her and thought she was a very well done character, yes some parts did come off as "mary sue" as others have noted, but does that really make her design bad? Magic in general is about skill and practice, the more the user practices a spell the better it becomes. Perhaps she is far more older than others or even from a family of very powerful mages?

    While the tonic certainly wouldn't cure anything aside from a possible vitamin deficiency, it might promote general health due to its nutritional qualities. Advertised as a smoothie or nutritional supplement, it would not have been a scam.

    I see mage's point with how this episode's moral can be insulting to those with disabilities and such (the episode is basically saying "it's all in your head") but with old people, gotta draw the line. My grandfather's in his 70's and he does construction and home improvement all throughout my childhood, which resulted in him losing his fingernail breaking several of his bones and getting BLOWN UP!!!! and he'd always laugh it off the next day. so, sorry mage, but gotta side with misanthropony on this one ^^;

    John David Tibbetts Yes but Granny Smith has been represented as frail and elderly. Old people can do great things but Granny Smith has always been shown as physically limited so it's a shock that she would suddenly be able to do these things. The case is different with your grandfather it sounds like he is quite physically strong.

    Hmm... Collaborations are hit-and-miss for me, and this one was a miss, sadly. I think, looking over things, that I liked Mage's ideas (the Braeburn bit at the end was especially excellent), but not so much the presentations of them. I also get that Silver was (for the most part) handling the positives and Mage (for the most part) the negatives. That's clear, and that's fine too. It just didn't work as well as I think it could have. Leaving out the actual content of the arguments, which was pretty good on both sides: Silver's presentation came across as "We have different opinions, and that's okay. Here's what I think...", which is good. Mage's presentation seemed more like "Your opinion is different than mine, therefore it's wrong". I'm certain that's not what the intention was, but that's how it came across to me, and It made agreeing with anything Mage said (in spite of there being some good points in there) rather uncomfortable not because of what was being said, but because of how it was being said.

    ( 10:39 ) Honestly, what the heck is her problem ? She *IS* aware that there are ''old people'' that run marathons, climb mountains, do skydiving, and all sort of even more extreme stuff (than what we see Granny Smith do), right ? I mean, for Pete's sake... we are talking of *Granny Smith*, an Apple family member ! They are pretty damn well known for being rather 'sturdy' and all, and not let themselves become ''immobile''. Also, fear/mental-blockage CAN very well stop someone from performing/doing things he/she used to do easily, from one day to another, after a specific incident... She seem to arbitrarily lock herself against 'ol Granny being able to be, well, ABLE?!, for such silly reasons. -_- Also, she becomes kinda insulting and irritating in her ''righteous rant'', after that. (I wouldn't mind, if this guest didn't come back, in all *honesty*.)

  • @RemKoshmar

    @RemKoshmar

    10 жыл бұрын

    It's not a righteous rant, it's just a rant. Reason why is distorted is on my channel. Also, I'm not against granny being able to do things, I simply do not like the fact that she does things without consequence. Old people running marathons? I'm sure they didn't just wake up one day and decide to participate in a marathon the other. They must've trained for them for months on end. No matter how fit you are, getting a sudden increase of a physical load is going to have consequences. Granny hasn't swam in YEARS and then she just jumps into a river and swims away like there's nothing to it then a bit later she frikkin WINS a swim meet while competing against ponies who most likely have been prepping fir it far longer than she has. Without her suffering any consequence (or any of the ponyvillians for that matter) we have absolutely NO proof that the tonic is fake, other than AJ assuming it is and getting paranoid over it. THAT'S my problem.

    Wow, Mage. You're bad at this. We needed that backstory for Granny Smith to give her a reason to want to believe the Tonic worked. She wanted to go back to be an aquapony again.

  • @RemKoshmar

    @RemKoshmar

    10 жыл бұрын

    Why can't she just want to be able to do things again like she could when she was young? Why's that not good enough? Why do we need this stupid aquapony gimmick? No, we don't, all she had to do is say 'my body ain't what it used to be, applebloom, I don't think these old bones would be able to handle it'. And that's all. Plenty of good reason to want the tonic to work.

  • @Daniel092004

    @Daniel092004

    LethalAuroraMage But wouldn't that be a bland and tasteless storyline? Oh, she's old, that's why she wants a tonic. She's just old, the end. Wow, how compelling. No, the story about being an aquapony adds an additional level of personal connection with water for Granny Smith and makes it more of a passionate drive than just "I'm old and want to do young things again." Not to offend, but an episode you write would probably be strong in literature, but really, really boring to watch.

  • @RemKoshmar

    @RemKoshmar

    10 жыл бұрын

    Daniel092004 FiM has history of taking boring-sounding set ups and making them interesting. Personally, I'd fine granny's struggle with the inevitable a much more endearing and personal story. If a writer had some talent, they could make it work and maybe even make it a great story. Have you ever seen the movie 'UP'? The first twenty minutes or so is just snippets out of a man's life. Boring little everyday events as he grows old. But I'll be damned if I didn't cry throughout that. That, my friend, is good writing and good application of visuals, as the story was told with nothing but visuals and sound.

  • @Daniel092004

    @Daniel092004

    10 жыл бұрын

    LethalAuroraMage I guess I just don't see what they did wrong. The backstory for Granny was an appropriate segway into her fervent desire to have something allow her to swim again. Yeah, it's not UP, but who's expecting God-tier writing from a 22 minute cartoon that needs a new story every episode? It was fun and enjoyable, and that's probably the most important part of FiM.

  • @RemKoshmar

    @RemKoshmar

    I get Mage’s rage her at Granny being the one to “need” the tonic, but if I may play Devil’s advocate for a moment, I will say it still makes sense for her to be the one to fall for it. In the real world older people (those who have retired and who start to loose their mental acuity) are statistically more likely to fall for scams than anyone else. Therefore a tweak I would make to the episode is showing a higher percentage of elder ponies in the audience.

That has literally nothing to do with anything. I'm not listening to people talk so I can look at a pretty girl; I'm listening for the sake of listening to what they have to say. I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you, Mage on several of your complaints for this episode. Mind you these are your opinions and I respect them, however from my life experiences with my grandparents and my own limitations, I know a lot of what this episode was trying to show was true. Yes, Granny is an old pony and shouldn't be pushing herself but, older people have good days and bad days. As a person who has a back injury herself, some days I walk like an old person and others I'm skipping and jumping about. Mind you I think the show may be going over the top with Granny's physical abilities. :/ And Granny being tricked into thinking the tonic works is a good representation of what infomercials do. My Grandfather would buy into these all the time. These slice and dice, this cooks your pasta in 2 mins, this will make those aches and pains go away. This showed a very important thing that happens in every day life; that we are convinced in buying products that not necessarily do what they're promised and spend TONS of money on them. Yes, she had experience with the brothers before but she knows they can make a good product based on their previous episode. And as for Granny doing all that swimming and not hurting herself, sure, she probably had pulled muscles and stuff but swimming is actually very good exercise for older people and/or injured people. It's easy on the joints, can improve cardiovascular system, tone muscles and even lower the risk of osteoporosis. All while being easy on the body. :3 So yes, maybe they over did it a little but they had good intentions of introducing children to these type of themes and everyday challenges people go through.

    I kinda agree with Mage about Granny being the topic of the moral of mental crutches. Livin in a retirement town and visiting tons of retirement homes for Halloween along with being around my great-grandparents a lot makes the fact that Granny can do that a bit fantastic. Sure, it's fine if what she did was an exception (like how some old people are able to stay very fit despite havin normally being more broken down) but yeah. It didn't break the episode for me, but that part makes me think of tons of bad things that happened to elders who overestimated themselves. 0M0

    Have to say this was one if not my favorite reviews of this season from a analytical persepective. I enjoyed seeing and hearing the same scenes being taken in very different ways from two people. In many ways it reminded me of the old syscial and ebert reviews of the past. One person analysing each scene for details and the other more invested in the plot and character with not such a eye for the details. I really hope to see more reviews with you Mage. While not the funniest team up by far the most insightful.

    I... didn't care for Mage. Maybe it's just how this review played things out, but - well, you transform another person against their will (read: baleful polymorph), abuse them for your own amusement, and have the gall to act cutesy about it? I'm sorry, but that is flat-out bitchy behaviour. On top of that, the blatant googly-eyes and slash shipping felt really out of place.

    Ok. I've been working through the playlist here, enjoying most, if not all of them. Most of your guests have been enjoyable in one sense or another, and most of your jokes are amusing, and your observations are valid, even if I don't always agree. But please, PLEASE, don't have this mage person back on. She was, in a word, annoying. Her rant was hard to understand due to the filter, the way she interacted with your character bounced between obnoxious, violent, or actively... well, stupid. Like, intentionally trying to be unintelligent, with primarily her actions, but also some of the things she said, but with this mary-sue-licous "I'm a super-mega-ultra-hyper mage who gets even more super-ultra-hyper-omega-supreme-awesome when I loose control of my emotions!" vibe. Every time she talked she was either hard to understand, or made me cringe, usually an aggravating combination of them both. I've enjoyed the vast majority of your guests. Truly. But as an attempt to offer feedback to this video... either Mage needs to completely rework the concept of her character, and potentially upgrade her mic (Though part of it was her accent, and I recognize that's not her fault, so it's not that huge an issue, sans the filter part...) or I would be dismayed to see her featured again. Not trying to be a prick, I swear. Just, I almost hated this episode, and I figured you should know that it had nothing to do with YOU.

Unless Granny's past exploits are common knowledge, then they did their homework to find a weakness to exploit in Granny Smith, and thus manipulate AJ into promoting their product. Its HER oc and it's Silver Quills decision on who he has on his video not YOURS. Mages argument is valid as the message is basically saying, "hey don't let your age stop you from doing amazing things" when in reality the elderly are severely limited on what they can and can't do and the episode basically say that all those problems the elderly have are 'in their head' is just a slap in the face for them. Yes I know pony anatomy is different from human anatomy but the message is as clear as one of Luna's night skies. You got a problem with Mage, you got a problem with who Silver has on as a guest then do us REAL fans of him a favor and leave cause I know to honest god no one will miss your whining about Mage

    LethalAuroraMage ok 1. holy fuck that was a fast resposne o.o you really are magic...... not sure weather to be scared or impressed..... 2. it could be possible that i just misunderstood your point and if so i apologize but after the granny smith flashback you were complaining about the flashback then you said "why can't she just be old? old people can do things and granny smith has been unable to do things since season one saggy hip anyone" now again if i misunderstood i apologize but that sounded like you were complaining about her being handicapped....

    KINGD353 Ehe, I just happened to check my messages at that time. c: Good timing~ as for that quote, I was not complaining about her handicap, I was complaining that they didn't use her already established problems (like the hip) and instead had to come up with a new reason. You completely misunderstood my point, ehe. x3 it's ok though, hope this clear things up for you?

    LethalAuroraMage welp in that case i apologize for misunderstanding you although it kinda made sense for them to make the new reason like they did. no amount of plasibo effect is gonna fix a fucked up hip.... it's alot more belivable to say her negative minddset caused hip pains then to say she drank the tonic and her hip is now magicly healed as long as she belives

    KINGD353 Am I the only one who remembers that Apple Jack mentioned getting a new hip for Granny? Cause it seems like a lot of people are complaining granny is suddenly better. Apple Jack mentioned getting Granny a new hip in like season one. Stands to reason that she got a new hip and in doing so it gave Granny the ability to be more active.

    Ok I disagree STRONGLY with Mage. I'm sorry sometimes elder people get told they can't do stuff that other or so called younger people can do. Because of that they tend to worry about health and hold themselves back from doing the things they love. I often tell my grandma she can do anything and talk positive then negative like Mage is doing. Even my grandma's doctor who KNOWS my grandma more then Mage knows Elder people to know that elder people need to get out more or their muscle get weak and bone will thin out. Plus swimming int he water is not going to hurt her. In truth water exercises are better then walking as it puts LESS stress on the body. It is a tool most of the time to help people WHO are hurt to get better or to loss weight. Even more so the whole sugar pill is used in medical terms still as sometimes its the WAY of thinking that help you get better then the meditation itself. I'm sorry just listening to his and how you guys make it sound like elder are to weak to even take care of themselves makes me soooo mad. With my mother working at a nursing home and me living with grandma. I can tell you first hand if you treat people weak they going to THINK they are weak. I will end with anyone can do anything if they put their mind to it.

    So I usually don't say anything, and there's nothing that I can do about it but I really don't like Mage. I'll admit that guests aren't my favorite but they are usually fine. For some reason she just grinds my gears. I think it's because I felt that she was harsh and overly pessimistic with nothing positive to add to the review. She was obviously not a fan of the episode and made a lot of points that were unnecessary or untrue. The only real "positive" things that she had to add were annoying costume changes for Silver Quill and a crush on the Flim Flam Brothers which just both things that I didn't really enjoy. Her being there just felt like more of a hindrance than a help to me... I'm sorry if it seems like I'm just trying to be mean and spiteful for no reason but I just wanted to properly explain why I didn't really like her being there because many people don't explain why they feel a certain way about things.

    It would be boring if I just agreed with silverquill all the time, wouldn't it? So he said good things about the ep I said the bad things about it. It was like a debate, a conversation. And the body switcheroo thing wasn't my idea, silverquill wanted to do it. As for my points being 'unnecessary and untrue'... could you perhaps explain to me why you seem to believe they are so? just saying that they are won't make that true. :3

    Sorry if I've offended you, it really wasn't my intention to do so. I can see more of your point when you say that you were taking the opposition opinion. Maybe I was a bit too hasty, so I’ll attempt to be more clear and thorough. (Sorry for the wall of text.) I was a fan of the flashback, it shows just how important swimming was to Granny and the change in style was refreshing. I’m a fan of listening to the stories that my grandparents tell and always try to listen to them while my cousins all find them boring. The point that the flashback/Granny telling her story was boring irritated me for personal reasons. The shark joke is a classic and it actually made me chuckle during the episode. Even if sharks don’t live in ponds and every adult knows that, Apple Bloom is still a kid so it is more likely that she would have believed it. I remember watching my older brother play this same prank on my little brother in the pool a few times when we were little. My younger brother would still become momentarily frightened even though you would think that he should have known better. Yes, the apple family fishing was a bit weird but the writers needed some reason for them to be at the river. And it is a show aimed at a younger audience, so sometimes things don’t really make a whole lot of sense. But it’s okay because not everything has to make sense all of the time. Even though Granny dislikes the Flim Flam brothers, and knows that they are tricky, she also knows that they have the ability make a good product. With that in mind, she doesn’t really have too much of a reason for not believing in it this time. Which brings me to my greatest issue: not bringing the placebo effect into consideration. Many people can do incredible things when they so much as believe that they can. It’s been documented many times that sometimes people can trick themselves into thinking that they’re cured from a condition during a medical trial just by taking a placebo pill. I’m not saying that Granny should have done all of the things that she did but theoretically, she could have been able to do them when she thought that she could. I don’t think it’s being disrespectful to people that have physical limitations by just allowing Granny to be able to swim again. I think that it might even be a bit inspiring to people who have some sort of hurdle that they have to overcome by saying that, “It is possible to do anything that you set your mind to.” or, “You won’t know what you can or can’t do unless you try.” (In response to the swimming, not the high diving) I think the high diving just took things to the extreme to make a point. Someone who can swim after not being able to is okay but I’ like to think that even the most entranced senior who is able to return to swimming would know that they couldn't high dive again. I think that the Braeburn angle would have worked nicely. However, I still don’t think that Granny has to be taken care of since it’s easy to see what she can accomplish through all of the things that she does throughout the episode, even though those things aren't in her best interests. Also, I think it would be harder for you to tell someone that you care about so much for, the truth rather than someone who is not from your immediate family; especially after seeing how happy that person has become. For example I would have a harder time telling my mother to stop doing something that makes her happy than I would a cousin of mine. Maybe I was being a bit too hasty with my original comment and I see now that I really didn't explain much of anything. I’m sorry that this is so long winded. Perhaps I simply thought that some of the points were more nit-picky than they should have been. Regardless, I am once again sorry for coming off as more brash than intended and do see some of your points with more clarity that I originally did.

    SuperFan686 I love my granny and her stories too and in the collab I wasn't the one falling asleep at that story, yanno? xD As for your points; you like to justify some of the things with your personal anecdotes, which is not a good way to debate/present an argument. For one, I have no way of knowing if you're telling the truth or not and second, just because you liked that part and say you liked it doesn't make it a valid claim. I'll say I didn't like that part while you did. so who's right then? It's personal taste and cannot be argued over. As for the placebo effect; I'm not against them showing granny being able to do things because she thinks she can, it's the fact that she suffers no consequences afterwards that bugs me. Placebo can be every bit as much helpful as harmful, but in this episode they were trying to make it seem harmful, otherwise AJ wouldn't need to worry about Granny. Because there were no consequences and granny just seemed to be totally ok makes it seem like the tonic actually did it's job and AJ's conflict rings hollow.

    True, you weren't the only one to fall asleep and I did justify some of my points with personal stories or with my own reasons. While I agree that this would make a terrible platform in a more serious debate (Though I really dislike using the word debate too often because it seems to imply that someone will win and someone will loose and this is all a matter of opinion.), wouldn't those justifications be fine in a setting where everything is based on opinion? I wasn't trying to say that your opinions were wrong as much as I just disagreed with them. I think I felt this way because the review seems to be more of a good cop/bad cop than each person saying things they like or dislike in more equal measure, which was something that I didn't realize earlier. Also, it seems as though the high dive was going to be the harmful part of the placebo effect in Granny's case. Swimming again wouldn't be so bad for her, as it is a low impact sport and not as harmful to her as many other activities would have been. Even if the tonic seemed to be working AJ still had to stop things before they got too out of hand. She knew that the tonic really didn't do anything and Granny would get injured if she continued to be so reckless. The point may have been that Granny would have suffered an injury or some other consequences if AJ hadn't told the truth about the tonic. That makes choosing to tell the truth look better than it would have if she had told the truth but Granny was still injured anyway. If that were the case, maybe people would ask what the point of doing the right thing was if someone was going to be hurt either way. But that's just what I thought of it. =)

  • @RemKoshmar

    @RemKoshmar

    SuperFan686 If they would've shown that granny's activities were taking a toll on her without granny realizing it, it would've been far better. I'm not asking for some grandiose bone-wrecking injury, but a hint that the tonic isn't actually working and this isn't just all in AJ's head would be good. You say that granny might've injured herself at the dive and that is wat we're lead to believe, but the only thing we have to go on is AJ's paranoia and no other actual proof. Maybe if some other ponyvillians got themselves hurt or something? Just... anything else than AJ's words to prove her right. Also, a debate is two sides presenting then countering arguments in a structured manner. There is no 'clear' winner at the end of the debate, that's usually up to the audience. The debate is a form of expressing opinion and arguing in a civilized manner, that's how I see it. c:

    actually just believing something will help like getting rid of a headache can work if they believe it will! even if it doesn't do what they say believing it will can help a lot! like in the legend of Zelda! a game theory I watched said that what the potions and power bands are is just something to make link believe that he can do it! like a blue potion that heals hearts may not but just makes link realize his true strength and heal him!
