I'd like to think that's a good explanation as to why Marble looks and acts like Fluttershy. They intentionally modeled her after Fluttershy due to the fact that Pinkie sees her as a little sister. So less it being intentional from the beginning more an idea that spawned later from their earlier interaction.

I actually do believe Maud when she said she was pushing as hard as she could, and here's why: with that other boulder, she was looking to *crush* it. But with Holder's Boulder, it had remain in one piece. So therefore, Maud was simply using a different tactic; one that would ensure Holder's Bolder wouldn't break, but it wasn't enough to get it back to its original spot. So THERE! And I didn't need science to figure that out, I used *LOGIC*! Ha ha ha haaaaa!

I can prove Maud was pushing with full force, using science as well: Jackhammers. Set a jackhammer up, and apply your weight to it, but not turn it on, it'll sit there, not destroying anything. Apply power to the jackhammer, and now suddenly it starts breaking things. The tip of the jack hammer, is moving up and down, very rapidly, making harsh impacts with the surface that one is trying to destroy. The tip of the jackhammer is as small of a surface area as possible as well, increasing the pressure at the point of impact. Now look at Maud Pie when she is pulverizing the boulder to save Pinkie's life... fast, rapid movements of the hooves. Hooves positioned so that just the tips of said hooves make contact, thus reducing the surface area at the point of impact, thus increasing pressure. Maud Pie was a literal jackhammer, when pulverizing the boulder.

4:31 actually, it was confirmed by one of the writers over at Twitter that limestone's the oldest, followed by maud, pinkie and marble in that order. considering that, it makes much more sense why she claims to be the one in charge. as the oldest she would be the legitimate heiress to the farm, once her parents retire. Apart from that, i'm just glad we finally got to see more of my favorite family, even though i wish they'd​ gone with a more diverse personality for her sisters than the ones we came up with in season 2.

Actually Pinkie states that she and Apple Bloom would be "4th cousins twice removed by a 5th cousin". Now ignoring the "by a 5th cousin" bit because that bit doesn't make any sense, their common ancestor would be, at closest, one of their great-great-great-grandparents. And the "twice removed" part means that that same ancestor would be the other's great-great-great-great-great-grandparent. In short, that's too far apart to be considered incest. Actually in any lab I've even been in, lab coats are mandatory at all times. And goggles are mandatory if chemicals are out in the lab regardless on how far away they are.

I'm still surprised how little the community has commented on the fact that Marble Pie is Pinkie Twin sister younger by only a few minutes.

You know what I just realized, Pinkie’s family is really supportive. From her coloring, energy, hobbies and more she’s really stood out from the family. Yet, none of them try to change her. Sure if they’re doing a job & she gets distracted they may call her, but that’s for anyone. None of them tried to make her change her ways from being a happy party pony to something more traditional for them. Good job Pie family

In my opinion, Silver Quill is at his best when he has others to interact with. The two surprise guests in this video was a nice little shift, seeing as Silver usually only has one guest when he collabs a video. Despite his usual amusingly snarky demeanor when doing solo videos, it's when his personality can play off of others that he's at his most enjoyable in terms of watchability. In my opinion, this is his best video yet, if not easily part of the Top 3

I mean I can see why Applejack may feel this way she's been thrust into a new situation that she's not used to. I think this is more a play on her stubbornness and here's why: Applejack has always had little hints that she believes her way is the right way and in this episode it's brought out more. She didn't want to change and thought her way was the only way and dug in her hooves against the change. Much like Rainbow Dash she needed a hit to her ego to snap her out of the "my way is the only way" mind set.

Those two: (starts to explain why Maud *was* actually pushing the boulder as hard as she could) You: (stops them) Me: *LET THEM SPEAK*

Easily my favorite of the group was Limestone Pie. I loved how she was hostile and seemed to have a not so easy relationship with Pinkie Pie. Yet she was not evil or completely grumpy, she just took her job seriously. I like the idea that Pinkie is also just a mare and get's along better with some of her siblings than others. I could still really tell that Pinkie and Limestone loved each other but they just don't really fit. I does make sense that Pinkie would have Maud as her favorite sibling. Her relationship with Limestone is not easy because of their different personalities and Marble is so extremely submissive that Pinkie has to take care of her and even speak for her. Maud was the only one where Pinkie felt an equal and by who she could let her guard down. I wasn't fond of the parents though. I just felt it was a little overplayed.

Breaking a rock, is not the same as moving a rock. An egg can actually hold up quite a number pounds of weight, but you can still crack an chicken egg with a spoon. The rock before, Maud needed to destroy and endure causing it to stay in the air while also breaking off peices with each hit. If anything it shows her endurence, not her strength. Take half a glass of water and hold it in the air. It's not very heavy, is it? Keep it in the air for 30 minutes without switching hands and then tell me how heavy it is. Beware my POWER!!!!

I love this explanation! It is both practical, and sensible put in a way that anypony could understand.

I'd like to point out that The Apple family were guests so it kinda made sense for them to follow the Pie family traditions during their stay. You dont go to your in laws place & make the celebrate the holidays your way. Thats just a party faul

I'm hoping that in the future, we'll get a variation of the whole thing of Twilight giving Spike a book as a present, by having it be a kind of book he'd enjoy, either because of the topic or maybe something like a graphic novel, since we know he likes comic books.

My response to Maud's comment about pushing as hard as she can: "... Yeah, that makes sense. After all, there is a difference between pushing and pulverizing."

3:20 I really liked that. It indicated that the cutie mark is indeed a sign of maturity. That Applebloom is starting to enter puberty. I really do wish they carry through on that. Not go into detail of course but that getting your cutie mark actually is what starts puberty in ponies. That we see that with all 3 of the CMC. That they take on more teenage traits.

I'm trying to math the boulder from shadow play, it's roughly four applejack-lengths across and four and a half high, with mass removed for the slope, and likely composed of volcanic rock due to the gorge being used to channel lava. I looked up moss-covered volcanic rock and its a pretty good visual match. I'm going to find the distance thrown by measuring the walls of the gorge and the rough distance from them walls to figure out an arc, and following THAT i'm going to work out the rolling speed for the sake of momentum, but it's no good if i can't work out the dimensions of the boulder. can anyone help me with that?

But what if the boulder is not volcanic rock? Maud was using all her strength and couldn't budge it. There is also the odd shape of it to consider too that maybe the forces of erosion apply differently because it's composition is different.

Given that you refer to maud, and the odd shape, when i described it as roughly cubic, i'm going to assume there was a communication breakdown, and apologise for not being clear. I was referring to the rock from the episode "shadow play", which is another matter. Regarding the rock from THIS episode, if we assume it, as many have guessed, is indeed a dragon egg then we can assume the weight of it's internals would be greater then that of common rock, and if it is just a rock it's more likely basalt based on the factors listed in the episode. Thank you for joining in though, those are good factors to consider, and i appreciate it anyway.

I mean, it is, but in a _very_ literal sense of the word. However, for those who are married or dating someone right now, the MarbleMac relationship is probably equally as "incestuous" as your own - the bloodlines are so far removed and so diluted that to call a relationship between the two "incest" is, while _technically_ accurate, a humongous nitpick.

by your definition, all relationships are incest, since all humans share a common ancestor. also, incest is defined as a relationship between close relatives, so by the very literal sense of the word, it is not incest.

This reminds my of a made up holiday my family has. We all get together, make food, play poker/cards and try to keep my uncles form killing each other. We don't really have a name for it but it's a lot of fun.

Oh Silver-Quill, when will you learn that we earth ponies have the fortitude to eat just about anything.

Honestly, it's not a big deal if Pinkie Pie and AJ are related or not; I don't think the fandom really talks about it all that much to be honest. That's only really brought up when people ship Big Mac and Marble Pie. But it doesn't matter anyway since Big Mac already has a special somepony and her name is Sugar Belle.

When pinkie came in the chimney it was actually continuity for the episode “hearth’s warming Eve” because when pinky was chancellor pudding head she also came in from the chimney

You have a cup filled half way with water... you pick it up with one hand and hold it. How heavy is the cup? Now hold that cup for 24 hours without putting it down... how heavy does that cup feel now? Despite the weight of the object not changing, our muscles grow tired; as a result, the longer you hold the cup, the heavier it'll feel, due to fatigue. As opposed to holding a cup for 5 minutes, then setting it down for 5 minutes, holding it for 5 minutes, and setting it down for 5 minutes... Your muscles won't become fatigued as quickly. This same principle, applies to Maud Pie. Despite her being able to pummel a rock into dust, the pressure applied to the muscles, isn't sustained for the same period that would be required to move a boulder. ALSO, if her muscles aren't built for sustained pressure over extended periods of time, that changes matters as well. So just because she is capable of pummeling a rock into dust, does not, in anyway, mean she can move a boulder with ease... But there is another reason that is equally plausible... what if the boulder, has an iron core? iron being much denser, and therefore heavier, than rocks, would explain why the entire pie family is having difficulty moving it on their own. Especially since they built the farm around the boulder, which means this is the first time they are moving it. So two possibilities, both equally likely, along with the fact, that the iron core possibility, would still have sustained pressure requirements to move, rather than obliterate. So both can be the reason behind why Maud isn't able to push the boulder all that well. What if there is a gold core? less likely... by a long shot... but that would just make moving that boulder even worse.

I know this is a bit late, but I can really relate to this episode. My grandfather had multiple wives (divorce and remarrying), but my mom became attached to one who wasn't her biological mother, or my grandfather's current wife. Now I have a whole side of my family that isn't even technically my family because of that relationship. So a story like this, with two families becoming closer without even knowing if they're related, is...hearthwarming.

My dad does family history work, and just recently discovered he and my mom are 13th cousins Go back far enough and everyone is related

SpectralSketches I heard of that. The stones are heated up so they'll do the cooking once they're in the soup. It's funny making that soup but also pretty complicated since I haven't found a good recipe yet.

The rock is from a story about a starving monk that finds a family and takes advantage of them by talking about a special soup made with a rock then he makes a normal soup and puts the rock in it, eats it and then takes the rock so he can fool another family

There was a lot of talk about whether an equine can bite into a rock, but I doubt that rocks are, well, digestible. If I need to eat something that never dissolves in my body, as a digestive aid for example, I'll just eat corn. I suspect that Limestone Pie is a rebuttal to all the psycho Pinkamena material out there. "See this scary mare?" the show seems to say "She's the one you don't turn your back on!" Yet at the end of the episode, even she's not so bad. Thanks for making this video, Silver.

There are certain minerals we need in order to function. These minerals can be found in rocks and dirt. Since horses, and ponies, are vegetarian they gain more of their dietary needs from that kind of thing.

I can't say that it really weighed on me. But I'd like to think that they really are related. Or at least the two families have accepted it as the norm. One of the blind reactors I watch had a 'YES, PLEASE, TELL ME' moment when he watched 'Fame and Misfortune.' And now that we've had both 'The Perfect Pear' and Big Mac's romance with Sugar Belle, I want to see the Apple Pear Pie Belle family reunion episode.

I really do find it odd how that “insert fan complaints” episode had that one guy obsessed over whether Applejack and Pinkie Pie are related or not. Personally, I really don’t care, and I haven’t seen anyone else in the fandom expressing concern over it either, not to say no one does. I’ve actually held the mentality of that episodes moral for many years before it came out: family are the people you love and that love you in return. I can say this rather easily, cause I in fact HATE several of my blood relatives with a very real passion, and actually consider people that I met online and this one guy I met in high school to be my real family, because unlike my blood relatives they always lend a sympathetic ear when I need it (and sometimes I REALLY need it), listen to me even if they don’t understand or care about what I’m talking about, and even if we sometimes bicker we never let it get the better of us, as apposed to, say for example, my blood related sister who has disregard my own suicidal depression as she doesn’t think I “deserve” to be suicidal because “[her] problems are worse than mine” and couldn’t give a shit about anything I have to say unless it’s what she’s talking about. Take it from someone who knows: blood is a meaningless fluid, and saying it’s “thicker than water” doesn’t hold any weight in the real world.

A welcome present this is. :D Also, I don't reallty put much thought into them being related. If tHey are, good for them. If not, doesn't really subtract from my enjoyment. Part of the fun is in not knowing. Although... This episode does bring some interesting implications. The possiblity of hinting at incest does raise a few eyebrows. But the less said about that the better!

As a wrangler and horsewoman I’m impressed that you got all the horse facts right!! This I knew from my certification for EIA (Equine Investigation Academy). Well done.

I really do like this moral though I would have liked it better for Twilight. That you shouldn't be projecting your own visions on what is "better" to someone who didn't ask for it. I'm really glad the episode didn't side with Applejack on this. I do feel that since becoming a princess Twilight can be somewhat arrogant and see her own opinion as automatically being superior to that of others. I still hope they'll do that in season 8. That Twilight wants to help a situation she sees as horrible but falls flat on her face and learns she shouldn't be projecting her own visions onto others. It's just something my mom drilled into my head from a very young age so it really rang true for me. That you need to respect other people even if you don't agree with them.

The way I see it, the reason that Pinkie doesn’t explain her traditions is the same, albeit way tamer, reason that AJ is so confident about her traditions being the best. Pinkie is just ecstatic that she’s able to share her family’s traditions with someone else, someone who is also her family, even if they aren’t blood related. Pinkie is just so comfortable with AJ because she sees her as her family.

I seriously love Maud. She's the second best side character in the show after Discord. Always love episodes that have her.

Honestly, even though it's only barely mentioned, the scene with Twi and Spike is my favorite part. Because my family also opens presents on Christmas Eve, and it was nice to see that.

That surprise science segment has me realizing Genghis Khan was real-life Zeus

This was fun to watch! You made some good points about the episode, and the science facts were cool too. The last bit with Gingerquill was unexpected and hilarious. I wonder where the sugary hippogriff ran off to…

Wow, I didn't notice that they put in a ponified version of Mrs. McCallister from Home Alone 1 & 2, I'm glad you pointed that out. Oh yeah, I forgot about your doom flag for awhile. You never know whom you might be related to distantly, I and one of the VAs in the show (more specifically Brenda Crichlow, the voice of Zecora and Matilda) are likely to be distant relatives.

Too true. I learned a while ago that I have shared ancestry with Elizabeth Bathory (yes, the woman who bathed in blood). It might be a little freaky, but once you accept it, it's easy to get used to.

Glad to see another After the Fact video from you, Silver Quill, especially just after Christmas. Great work, and I can't wait for the next one as you finish up Season 5 during the hiatus for Season 8.

I'm surprised Silver didn't mention Pinkie putting up 19 hooves when counting out the new friendships. The math checks out by the way.

3:02 Well Random screaming pony, I'm glad you asked. Let's break this down; Both are farming families centralized in the area of Ponyville, they have the same basic Cutie Mark arrangement, and let's be honest with ourselves; every family, extended or otherwise, has at least one person like either of these two. By that logic, I think yes, they are in fact related. Of course, that is just my personal opinion (feel free to fight me on it), but I think it fits.

One family tradition that I have that I've never seen elsewhere: silly string fights. Each year, we put out our stockings, and each year, someone gets everyone a couple of cans of silly string. After all the presents are unwrapped, the brunch is eaten and the hugs are distributed, we go across the street to the park and blast each other with fluorescent foam.
