Just to correct you Mr. Quill - Her mother may not have directly told Diamond to "Blackmail" or "Exploit another pony disabilities" but she did not have to, Remember that children emulate what their parents do, If Spoiled Rich did this on a regular basis to those who worked for her or what not then in Diamond eyes that would be considered the Norm and how she is meant to treat others...Not as equals but below her in every way possible.

If DT did things trying to emulate her mother then they are still DT's actions. What Silver is trying to say is that just because he understands DT's reasons does not mean he instantly forgives her.

Dejay Page Well there is a chance the husband has no idea how the wife acts behind his back - After all he is 'Filthy Rich' and I do not believe he got there by spending too much time with his family you know? Probably just enough to affirm he cares about them before rushing back to work.

Very true, but Silver's point was that regardless as to what the mother does it doesn't excuse Diamond Tiara from being a bully, just because someone is a victim of bad parenting does not mean it's okay for them to treat others badly, we can forgive Diamond Tiara because she's a filly, but that doesn't make her behavior or what she's done okay.

I will never understand how an adult pony can have an issue with a "blank flank". How does that logic work? That's like a parent saying, "Don't associate with those pimple-faces." Or, "Did you hear his voice crack? How uncivilized." What?? I think she really needed to see a video on Pony biology... She really should understand by her age...

Except there _are_ adults like this and it's probably due to how they were raised and/or what they're discriminating against having something to do with their past. Spoiled Rich comes off as someone who may have had over-achieving parents or perhaps, got her cutiemark late in life, and now deals with her trauma by becoming what she once hated; her teasing peers or chiding parents.

  • @TheAmberFang

I'd say that a child being a "Blank Flank" can parallel a child having low grades, being from a poor household, being disabled, being part of a minority group, and perhaps any number of other things. It's like when a rich parent doesn't want their child hanging out with poorer children from public school, instead enrolling them in expensive private schools.

I completely disagree. All Ponies are "Blank Flanks" at some point in their lives. It's a natural part of growing up, which i why I compared it to puberty. Not all children experience any of the things you listed off, so it isn't an equal comparison.

One thing I do really like is how realistically they presented it. Pip won because of the skillful campaigning of the CMC but he actually turned out to be a worse leader than Diamond Tiara. It shows how becoming popular and being a great leader are two entirely separate skillsets. It also has a good message in that helping your underdog friend might not be a good idea as he might not be the best one for the job.

What makes me truly admire the CMC is how even though Diamond Tiara Insulted them, blackmailed them and even bullied them, they still want to help Diamond Tiara out and check to see if she's ok. Their kindness and understand is what led to them helping others better themselves and with all their hard work, they were rewarded with their cutie marks. While children can learn from their parent's actions and vocabulary, children can learn from others as well so be kind and treat others well no matter how bad someone treats you. Show them that there's another way. 4:15 Yea I've faced multiple issues with youtube when it comes to MLP reviews. I mainly stopped my reviews of the show because my videos always got flagged because of audio, visuals or even images and the video title itself. Yea I fought them but they just keep coming back weeks later.

I think Fancy Pants actually did what he did because of Twilight. Unlike most who for some reason didn't know that Twilight was Celestia's student he clearly did, he went immediately for Twilight after all instead of any of the mane 6. He knew that Celestia had big plans for Twilight, he didn't know exactly what they were but he knew she was destined for something big. Not to mention she's the closest thing Celestia has to a child and a bad word from Twilight would certainly not be good. He knew that Twilight was a pony he wanted to have as an ally. On that I really like Fancy Pants. The spoiled are so often vilified but he actually demonstrates the positive effects of an upper class person. He knows he's elite and above others. Because of that he's actually quite nice because he knows an overall positive reputation helps in the long term. He also associates with the right ponies. Someone like Spoiled Rich is more like someone who has come from lower class and then went into upper class. They feel insecure about their position and therefore feel that they have to prove to others that they are above them. Fancy Pants doesn't have that because he doesn't feel like he has anything to prove to lower ponies. One thing Fancy also has above Spoiled is that because he grew up rich rather than marrying into it he learned much better to handle his position. He doesn't abuse his position because he doesn't see the point of that action. They really demonstrate the difference between being born in power and forcefully taking power.

Minor correction: what you were describing as "nepotism" is actually cronyism. Nepotism is giving special privileges and opportunities to your family (for instance, the manager of a company giving a high-level job to his son instead of a more qualified candidate), cronyism is giving special privileges and opportunities to your friends.

I just realized this but they all have three images as their cutie mark. A good example is Sweetie Belle ( nice choice of French for a sister of a designer). She has the shield, but she also has a musical note inside it and a star... so she will most likely get a side hobby of singing (but she has not noticed that yet as in the next CMC episode she does crochet) and be one of the big stars. But hey, that's just a theory. A PONY THEORY!!! Thanks for getting the reference. (It was not intended but that is the way my cards fell.)

An entertainer has a certain responsibility to fans and the audience, but they also have every right to provide their views and commentary, even if just in minor ways. Indeed, it can drive wedges and even lose viewers, but taking an indifferent stand to politics to the point of refusing acknowledgement can be just as bad. It shows an unwillingness to stand for anything. And if you stand on nothing, you become a Cloudsdale politician. See, because pegasi walk on vaporous clouds, which are like nothing. Ah whatever. Many comedians' success comes from putting humor on their life experiences, exaggerated or not. There's no risk in doing what you were meant to do. The same goes for media, where producers and executives should put opinions in their creation. Every story has at least one theme, even the simplest of shows, but there can be no theme with no opinion. As for news, it's just natural to draw on political views because that's a necessity of democracy; it does not work with an uninformed public. It's natural and important for there to be biased and unbiased news. Moreover, it's important to acknowledge these views and form discussions around them, not fall prey to the cowardice of modern political tactics, which is attempting to distract and discredit any opposition instead of supporting oneself.

It occurs to me that speech could also apply to what happened in the movie with Twilight and Tempest. After all, it wasn't as if Twilight gained anything by saving her. She certainly hadn't done anything to earn it, and she in fact blew a chance to get her power back and possibly save Equestria to rescue her. But...it was the "right", "decent", and "kind" thing to do.

I wonder if something will happen to Garble like with Diamond Tiara, going from the bully on top to eventually becoming the outcast like Spike and the CMC were in from their point of view. With how Ember is attempting to build relations between ponies and dragons the way dragons will see ponies will change and even their own ideals will be affected making a kind, caring dragon the type of dragon they want to strive to be rather than strong and intimidating like Garble. From what we’ve seen in the show so far, dragons are slowly starting to come around with Ember in charge and in Gauntlet of Fire and the first part of Shadow Play Spike managed to come out on top due to friendship. Hopefully there will be something like this in season 8.

I also agree that Diamond Tiara isn’t totally absolved, but I’d like to point out that bit about her not seeing the better examples from families around. She probably did, but (as clearly shown in the episode) Spoiled Rich held pretty much all those other families up to Tiara as examples of contempt and inferiority. That’s why so many people are able to transfer their ill will to the mom, because ultimately Diamond Tiara is a child. And children don’t just emulate their parents, their standards and sense of right or wrong are taken from them as well. Spoiled Rich doesn’t have to tell Diamond Tiara to blackmail the CMC, she just has to make it clear that no method is too dirty if it helps you get ahead and/or that the absolute WORST result would be if she LOST to these ponies that are her “inferiors”. But also, children are vicious, vicious things and the DT is actually much more believable child character to me. So who knows??? Then again, I’ve seen elementary school kids beat their mothers in public and pay other kids to bully others for them after being placed under stricter supervision. So...that’s my bar...

Interesting thing about Silver Spoon... I think she may be hiding something from us. Fair warning, I'm about to go into a lot of theory here, so I'm talking half a novel here, but I think it's in interesting possibility. Plausible, too. You see, I've always wondered why she keeps following Diamond Tiara when all the while, she's being neglected by her. Even from their very first episode, Diamond Tiara starts to ignore Silver Spoon in her efforts to cheer her up. It only gets worse from there. So why does she stay? That's when I noticed her cutie mark, and its connection to her name, as well as a contradiction in this episode. Her name comes from the phrase "born with a *silver spoon* in her mouth," which refers to inherited wealth. However, the reason behind that phrase is a simple concept: Spoon-feeding. So basically, she's been spoon-fed wealth her entire life. Sounds simple enough, right? Until you realize that Silver Spoon never really showed her wealth. We don't even see any hint of wealthiness from her. The closest we get is in the soft canon, specifically in the Elements of Harmony Volume II Guidebook, where it describes her as such: "SILVER SPOON leads a privileged life. She's been given everything she could possibly want. Sometimes she wonders if it'll ever be enough. In the meantime, she'll just keep on buying things she doesn't need." Now, I don't know about you... but this doesn't sound to me like wealth. To me, it sounds more like the polar opposite: *debt.* Interestingly enough, this episode actually has one line that I've always thought was out of place, and it came from Silver Spoon. In the Vote song, Silver Spoon gets her only singing part in the entire series, and she says something unmistakably false... or... almost does anyway. "I've a tiny suggestion that you should be aware. You could probably win this election if you show them all you reall-" What was she about to say here? Well, when you think about it, it has to be a single-syllable verb that rhymes with aware, and once you rule out every other rhyme, you'll come to only one conclusion. "All you really care." Not only has Diamond Tiara shown that she doesn't care about anyone in the class, but she's been shown in this episode - no... in this VERY SONG that she blackmails the other kids. I don't think Silver Spoon would lie about this though. So basically, believe it or not, Diamond Tiara DOES have a caring side. Now here's the question... To whom? There's only one logical answer here: Silver Spoon. So, so far we have Diamond Tiara's caring side for Silver Spoon, and Silver Spoon's expenditure. You can probably already make the connection, but I have one more piece of evidence. Now, look at the cutie mark, and notice the heart on the spoon's handle. Think about what that means metaphorically. Her heart is on the part of the spoon you hold. In any other context, it makes no sense, but think back to her name. She's lived her life not dissimilar to the concept of spoon-feeding, and the heart takes on a new meaning. A _VERY_ new meaning. Dependency. She who holds the spoon, holds the key to Silver Spoon's heart. This is the conclusion I've arrived at. *Silver Spoon's has metaphorically been spoon-fed her entire life, and whoever holds the spoon, holds her heart. However, after her parents spent so much money on her, they went bankrupt. Silver Spoon was no longer wealthy, and no longer happy. That's when Diamond Tiara came in...* ...and picked up where they left off.

Dear sweet baby Jesus in the manger, I adored your Doctor Who references - namely how you applied the speech and situation in The Doctor Falls to this episode (and really to MLP's overall lesson). The design for the 12th Doctor pony is spot-on, too. Also just want to say that "The Light of Your Cutie Mark" is the best song in the episode. We need another song like it - a fast-paced, back-and-forth between the protagonist(s) trying to reason with the antagonist(s). It's too bad Daniel Ingram said he struggled with it because it's honestly my favorite song of the season.

  • @DragonxFlutter

Despite the episode's rushed pacing, I still consider it one of my favorites. It brings the long awaited payoff to the CMC's main story arc, and it's led to story opportunities to develop some of the side characters without needing to involve the Mane 6. Not to mention that those songs are GORGEOUS. "We'll Make Our Mark", "The Pony I Wanna Be", "Light of Your Cutie Mark". OH GOOD SWEET LUNA IT'S AMAZING! I STILL tear up whenever I see the Crusaders celebrating their achievement! I honestly feel that, because of the emotions this episode can bring out, it'll be counted as one of the best episodes of the show when all is said and done.

Gravity Falls did this episode better in Northwest Mansion Mystery. Same basic premise: bratty antagonist is redeemed by rebelling against their asshole parent(s) - but executed much more gracefully. For one, it's better paced, despite taking place in the same amount of time and juggling a similarly prominent B-plot. It's also way better at reframing the brat as a victim - in CotLM, it feels kind of token, because Spoiled Rich isn't portrayed as significantly worse than Diamond Tiara, nor is there as clear a connection between Tiara's actions and her upbringing. But in Gravity Falls, the parents are portrayed as outright abusive and controlling, making them way worse than Pacifica and making them much more directly responsible for their child's past actions. It does have the same problem of the character never being heard from again, though.

Sean Murphy Yeah that's true. Plus it helps that they shown Pacifica's parents before her reformation. Silver Quill, I'd like to add to the idea of the CMC not being condemned for their innocent compassion towards Diamond Tiara, if I may. Have you seen a movie called Song of the Sea? It's a 2014 Irish animated film that involves a story of a family struggling through loss and explores the dangers of bottling emotions. One of the characters, a six year old mute girl wins the main character over, who initially hated her by letting her innocence be a beacon of light for him while recognizing how he was feeling. We often dismiss innocence as a weakness, but it was her greatest weapon throughout the entire movie, and it won the main villain over. She never suddenly gained a magical strength that allowed her to beat down the baddies; she removed herself from the darkness that consumed everyone else and used her ability to resist it to combat it away. It was a powerful example of what a strength innocence like this can be.

I can see where you are coming from. We've forgiven Starlight, who brainwashed ponies into joining her cult-like village and then screwed with time. We've forgiven Sunset, who nearly invaded Equestria with an army of brainwashed teens. We've forgiven the changelings, who cause not one, but two crisis in Equestria. We've forgiven Discord, who destroyed Equestria. And we've forgiven Stygian, who nearly cast all of Equestria into eternal darkness all because he was jealous. I think we can forgive Diamond Tiara. Not right away sure, but over time like with Sunset.

Sure he is a more interesting character overall, but he is still a dick. Despite a few missteps, Starlight is still trying to make an effort to be a better person, while Discord is still a trolling douche 90% of the time.

Diamonds reformation was the only one i liked up till that point. Precisely because it wasn't forced. No Orbital Rainbow Friendship Bombardment from the Elements of Harmony. No threats, no life and death. Instead it seemed like an ACTUAL reformation of character. After Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara fought, Diamond took a good hard look at herself and didn't like what she saw. And now she strives to be a better person. That is character development I can support. I still curse how quickly they reformed Sunset Shimmer and Luna. Starlight Glimmer seems to be following Diamond's lead. She was shocked into seeing what her actions could have led to, and now she is learning how to be a good person. Real reformation. No magic fix. She blunders alot, but she is getting there. And many members of the fandom have taken a liking to her because of that. Favorite Starlight Glimmer scene: Gliimmer: "I like kites." Maud: "Kites are cool."

I'm glad you love it as I do, Silver. Oddly enough, the two episodes it most reminds me of are among my least favorite. I had to work out how this differed. Funny you should complain about musicals increasing the pace, as I find they usually present the opposite problem: Most musical numbers suspend plot advancement for a few minutes. (As it happens, I just got back from watching "Crazy for You," which fits this description.)

Still my favorite episode of S5 and one of my favs of the series. You make a good point about DT's redemption and Spoiled's influence on her. However she was still a major factor. I am pretty much who I am because of my mother's direct influence, only instead of 'following' her lead, I completely rejected it since I am her polar opposite (and sadly, I don't want to have any association with her). Nice to know I wasn't the only one who thought that DT was technically 'moving up', but interacting with the CMC. Hell it got touched upon in Twilight Time.

I'm a little confused as to why you would say the Equestria Girls version of Filthy Rich is a villain. Granted, I don't mean to bring this up to make you feel, in any way, obligated to rewatch that particular "film", but he gave a failing camp multiple extended times to pay the bills for the business they couldn't keep running (which, is uncharacteristically generous of anyone with designs for major construction), and given he had plans to make a resort, and knowing what little I do of construction, I still know how many city, county, and state boards you have to talk to, multiple times, just to get the permission to do anything with the land you have even after you own it, to say nothing of the logistics of beginning to hire workers for construction and potential hires for once the building is made (background checks being a thing and taking time to complete). So, him being shown to be a little miffed at the end of the movie doesn't seem like such a "villainous" action, even if you don't know anything about construction. In fact, he doesn't even cause a fuss. He just stays at the back of the cave during the ending music number and leaves. That seems like a pretty adult way to handle what was potentially, if not already was a lengthy investment. That ... rather lengthy "question" said, your commentary on this episode was spot on.

Giving her an extension on the payment sounds good, but look at his mannerisms and listen to the way he says it. That is not somebody who thinks that she's going to find the money before the end of the month. Plus he turns up in the middle of a camp to "take in the scenery", is told to come back when camp is over, agrees and then does the same thing the next day. There's no reason to do that unless he's trying to wind her up.

Except the first part of your theory is self defeating, since, if he doesn't expect to see the payment happen then he wouldn't bother with giving an extension in the first place. As for the second part, it is hardly irregular business practice to check on one's perspective property, especially when you are the person holding the purse-strings.

  • @wendyheatherwood

    @wendyheatherwood

    R. Downgrade Why would he give her the extension if he did think she could raise the money? As he says himself, the spa resort would line his pockets with more money than the camp ever could and why come back the next day after agreeing to wait until camp was over? Look at his whole demeanour when interacting with her. He's enjoying having power over her. The extension isn't for her benefit. It's simply drawing the whole thing out so he enjoy himself at her expense. Look at his mood when she announces that they've raised enough money to save the camp. He is not even slightly happy about getting his money.

Well Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon pretty much went back to doing their own thing and she doesn't pick on them anymore. That's pretty much what I would have expected them to do. Reformed Diamond Tiara or not I don't think the CMCs and them really mesh well together as friends but i'm sure she feels like she owes them to some degree for helping her out.

  • @Kartoffelkamm

Well, Diamond Tiara´s special talent is making others do what she wants, as we´ve seen several times throughout the show. She also stated it in this episode. And honestly, there´s not much you can do with such a character as protagonist or support. Maybe if the CMC need some help with a task, they could ask her for help, but then again, Diamond Tiara is rich, can easily control others and it seems as though her family has some form of connections all across Equestria, especially in the upper class. The only real story I can think of right now is that Applebloom asks her for help with something, she uses her connections and the best super power in the multiverse (money), but toally misses the point and has to learn a lesson like "help others the way they want, not the way you think is best." Who knows?

That is a point and its not like I like seeing Diamond Tiara in the background considering shes my favorite character in the entire show. A lot of people want to see them befriend the crusaders and become like a miniature mane 6 or something. Like they would work together and solve cutie mark problems together since solving CM problems is pretty much what the CMCs do in every episode now. This is not at all what I would like to see but i'm throwing it out there as a possibility and something I wouldn't at all be surprised to see happen in the show. I think it would feel forced. I would prefer a route where she doesn't befriend the crusaders but maybe still tries to pay them back for helping her. I always preferred seeing Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon as their own group separate from the crusaders.

I always thought Diamond Tiara's mother like Catherine the Great's mother. If people have read history, they know that Catherine's mother wasn't good mother - she actually tried to use her daughter to get herself luxury life. That's why I little bit wonder, did creators think about Catherine the Great and her mother, when they created Diamond Tiara and her mother.

Uh, no. Loosing the election was NOT the best thing that ever happened for her. Loosing Silver Spoon was the catalyst that caused Diamond to take a real good look at herself. Sadly, if Silver had stuck by her she would have pouted and seethed about the election loss and then moved on and wait until being given another chance to have the upper hoof over her self imposed arch rivals. The cycle would have repeated itself if Silver had not stood up for herself and walked away. Three cheers for Silver Sass!

This was definitely an episode most--if not ALL--of the fandom had been waiting for, and damn if it didn't disappoint! We finally got to see the end if an arc that the CMC had been stretching out since the very first season of the show, and through that, we also got to see the reformations of two recurring villains that have been around just as long. I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, but all in all, I can safely say that "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" (wonderful job on that Indiana Jones wordplay, DHX; well played) is by far one of my favorite episodes of the series. Also, I have to commend Silver on his expert hook work there. But I do have a concern... Did you steal that hook straight from Roadhog himself, or is it a replica? 'Cuz if it's the real deal... I just hope him and Junkrat go easy on you.

When I was bullied at school when I was 10 and my former bully lost her friends since new kid came to class I befriend her too for same reasons. She was more Silver Spoon than Diamon Tiara however. And it didn't work out well though since we don't have anything in common and when we moved to another school later she was still clinging to me which made me not able to make friends. It was my own fault but it was really hard for me to socialize after being bullied for years and not trusting people and having low self esteem. But I can't really say I regret it but I really wonder what I should have done instead even now. Regarding the Mane 6 as socialites, firefighters are paid for what they do. Apart form Twilight who hopefully had a stipend to study form the start (but her family seems to be pretty well to do) we have not seen the rest get money. Even though my head canon is that they did during the Discord defeat ceremony since. Applejack's money issues vanished. And Christmas shows aren't usually reserved for top talent regardless of location so that shows nothing and I don't think they were payed. It's as a honor but that's all.

Whoever wrote that quote for the trading card needs a clue, as that was asinine. Personally, the election section of the episode is more of a way to have Diamond Tiara further collapse into a controlling jerk, so she can melt down afterwards. It's bad timing. Except for that trading card, which shouldn't have gotten past the editors. I think Scootaloo recognized her own frustrations and isolation in Diamond Tiara, and that's why she suggested checking on her. The running backwards thing is actually possible for horses. They can gallop backwards. I think the musical world rules in Equestria are why they don't run into anything, or trip. Also... wow. That was a great "Reason You Suck Speech" for Spoiled Rich! EDIT: I think I recognize that chain used to pull Spoiled Rich over. It's foreshadowing for future reviews and character/character archetype videos. ;)

You're selfish, entitled and make the creator feel bad for finally uploading something, instead of celebrating the fact that they finally did, which is going to have the opposite effect than the one you want. This kind of talk discourages creators, as shame is designed to do. Also, are you not subscribed to anyone else or _do_ anything else? 0MidnighttheDragon0 I'm not overractionary, I'm talking normally. Sorry, not sorry, for having a lot to say about things. Btw, jokes are supposed to be funny, not hurtful. Learn the difference.

If I'm overreactionary for a _paragraph_ about something I find annoying and shady, then SilverQuill's completely stepped off the curb and should be hospitalized for spending work weeks making videos about a little kids cartoon. Here's the thing; they don't have to be some long-time, shit disturber, in order to be part of the problem. Chances are, they're the upteenth person to say this very thing and comments/"jokes" like this one only pile up and bring creators down in the long run so why add to it? And let's not kid ourselves, (pun intended,) complaining that Silver used to make monthly videos is completely self-serving; only making the complainer feel better. They're not kidding, they're _venting._ There's a difference. Plus, what might be funny to you might not be funny to someone else. Do I need to remind you about how Pinkie treated Gilda when she first arrived? Her pranks weren't funny and yet they tried to make Gilda out to be the bad guy for not enjoying it. That's pretty much victim blaming. Then we have 28 Pranks Later where Rainbow learns pranks are only funny when you're _not_ the target. Same goes for this. It's not funny for the person receiving the joke and you're not even the OP. Why are you defending someone you don't know or did you think I was responding to _you?_ No matter how you slice it, "jokes" like this only end up harming people and I'm sorry to "overreact" again but if I could get away with just saying, "You're wrong" and not have to explain myself, I fucking would.
