After Ten Years of Being a Dentist …She Quit!

In this episode of The Truth Behind Dentistry, Dr. Norton of People Plus Purpose talks with Dr. Laura Brenner who shares her 10+ year journey hoping life as a dentist would get easier, but it didn’t. Laura openly shares common traits other dentists might also be experiencing: shame, the burden of patient happiness, the feeling of being stuck, and more. Learn the difference between burnout from loving dentistry and burnout from hating it, how doors for reinvention and trusting oneself to do something different exist, and the best places to find opportunities to move forward inside or outside the field of dentistry.
Dr. Brenner helps dental professionals solve burnout by starting a successful & enjoyable side gig so they can reduce clinical practice hours and regain career happiness.

I practiced over 40 years, burned out for half of it. However not qualified for other choices, i and my family hung in there. Retirement is wonderful!

@@traywaters1575 you're welcome! It's important to hear all sides! There are plenty of people who love dentistry, and plenty of people who don't. Just remember that no matter what, you can choose what success looks like for you in your career, and you are never stuck.

I've been a dentist for 30 years and feel kinda sorry for the recent grads out there. Dentistry as a respected and lucrative profession has gotten so much worse than when I first started. Think about it. Who wants to come out of dental school nowadays hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt to get a crummy, low-paying DSO job that's run like a sweat shop while working long hours, evenings, and on weekends? Over the last several years, more and more companies have cut healthcare benefits for their employees, esp. dental. People have less and less discretionary income these days. Meanwhile, dental insurance companies have barely increased reimbursement on most procedures, if at all. Over the years, I've seen so many dentists resort to committing insurance fraud to make more money. It's insane. I would never tell my kids to be dentists with the current state of the industry. There are so many easier and less expensive ways to make a living than dentistry. I would advise all you young dentists out there that unless you have a burning passion to continue doing dentistry, to get out while you're still young.

I'm currently working in healthcare and I can say that I think many of the issues you mentioned run rampant across the board in the entire healthcare industry. It's not just dentistry, but I'm sure dentistry is a separate beast of its own. I've been contemplating getting out of the healthcare field now for several years, but just haven't gotten brave enough to bite the bullet and do it. It's mostly due to my inability to come up with any sort of plan that feels like I can safely transition to. Please tell me what are the "easier and less expensive ways to make a living than dentistry" that you mention.

@@user-hn9qg5qm3o I was a practicing doctor for 33 years and overlapped the last 8 of those years developing a coaching business, now 15 years in coaching. I love it! Coaching can be focused many different ways. My work is focused on leadership and workplace culture but someone else might be more system/process or tech focused or ?

I have dental clients who love their job and are making a great living. For many, the biggest challenge is finding the right team and dealing with human drama. Dr. Norton is the person to help with this aspect of the business. For some, diversifying into other fields may be the answer, but for others it's just finding a way to focus on what you love while smoothing out the wrinkles.

We all dreamed of creating our working schedule as a dentist in Turkiye. But here the current situation is to work for 6 days every week with almost nothing to afford a living. Ok, this may be for the first years of dentistry but by the years past you can earn much more money still need to work lots of hours

For what it is worth: Years ago. Before you had three d scanner. A dentist "invented" the concept of cat scans. And creted the first 3 D x ray devices. Which were of course first used in medical field.

I am in the process of getting crazy expensive dental work, I have always hated going to any dentist, I can't imagine this is any kind of a satisfying job for dentists, but for a patient who requires so much work ..time..and my lord ridiculous amounts of money from every walk of life its absolutely ridiculous. I have two choices spend 60,000 for implants, or false teeth..in the USA. Or go to Mexico and get it done for 5% of the price including air fare and hotel. I could careless if my dentists likes me or not, that is not why I am there.
