After nationwide Real Water recall, questions remain about how the bottled alkaline water was made

A federal investigation is underway to determine if an alkaline water sold in several states and online made people sick and might have put them at risk of needing liver transplants. Consumer investigative correspondent Anna Werner traveled to Las Vegas to look into it.

    I mean, the inverse makes sense, so he probably assume that the direct version would make sense as well. If something is poisonous, you probably shouldn't ingest any of it, even if it's a tiny, tiny amount. A "trace" amount of something very dangerous is still bad. And if something is completely safe - usually a bit more, or double, etc. of that thing is still fine. Like, for example, something random like a food - a banana let's say. One banana is safe, ergo, most people would also assume eating 6 bananas is still safe. Or if this was orange juice concentrate or something, added double the OJ concentrate would still be safe, just might taste weird. He was thinking along those lines. You can't blame the guy, it makes sense with many other food/drink items, so I can see why he'd think about it that way, especially given that he has no idea what's in that concentrate. I mean, he was still wrong - but the owners were responsible for this ultimately. They were the one putting who knows what into the water, and telling an untrained guy that has NO IDEA what's in the "concentrate" and isn't a chemist, etc. - to just "put in more concentrate" was a horrendously stupid and irresponsible thing to do. They're the ones at fault here, not this poor goober that was probably being paid like 10 bucks an hour to dump some mystery liquid into bottled water for his boss.

  • @ParadigmUnkn0wn

    @ParadigmUnkn0wn

    In his defense, he doesn't have the education or training to know any better. He also probably assumed that the concentrate was just a buffer to bring up the pH to the proper level on his meter, and as long as he hit the right number or range on the meter it was all good no matter how much he added.

    People keep acting like this is what PhD chemists do. It's not. $80-100K+ industrial chemists don't work on production lines, adding chemicals and testing pH of every batch of water. They set standards, create protocols, and develop procedures to ensure a standard outcome. in a larger facility, you might have a quality control person who oversees randomized product testing. But this is a very small facility. A literal mom and pop shop. They're lucky if they even had a consultant establish guidelines and procedures to follow and maybe answer questions on occasion. If procedures and training were in place, this man would have probably been an okay hire. He lacks a little common sense, but apparently, he figured that if the chemicals he was working with were harmful, he wouldn't have been left on his own. And just because this man didn't know about the chemical compounds, doesn't mean they were the wrong chemicals. Just may have been the wrong dosages. Just poor management all around.

    There's something else at issue here, I'm pretty sure, beginning with workers that have no real understanding of their jobs. A pH in the 8 range isn't that far away from neutral (7) and there are city water systems whose "normal" water is also as high as the mid-8 range. It _is_ better for infrastructure, especially metal pipe longevity, and probably for acid reflux sufferers as well. (My city, in contrast, spends a small fortune trying to lime its acidic water stocks just to reach the mid 6's.) Hyping alkaline water using other unproven claims is just standard American snake-oil sales tactics.

    A lot of bottled water companies just get the stuff from municipal supplies, and just ship it out, but one company came up with a plan to put a large bore well directly into the Mecan springs in Wisconsin, ( the source of the Mecan river, one of Wisconsin's premier trout streams, and the life's blood of the Germania marsh wildlife area) and bottle it under their name and ship it out of the state, now this particular company would have you believe that the source of their water is a spring high in the French Alps, their plot got exposed, and the outcry from the local population was so loud that they were denied the necessary permits. The name of this company? Evian! What is that company's name spelled backward? Naive!
