For anyone getting a black ball when you change the gravity to zero, make sure you used the pick whip to tether the EFFECT’s Position to the path you created, not just the layer’s position (under the transform options). Thanks @Monique Golan for suggesting this. Also make sure you’re viewing the animation when the particle is actually moving. If it stays still, it’s just going to look like a black ball.

I had the same issue and I realised I was making the mistake of parenting the overall position of the particles to the Null, but you have to Alt+click to create position expression and parent the expression to the Null, quite silly detail, but crucial for the dynamic.

I love how you go step by step and are very clear! However, in 2024 I'm having a hard time with just finding the "express position" part at about 4:30 in the video, because I just don't see it. Has AE updated so that it's a different step now? I'm a beginner with this program, but am very experienced with Illustrator/Photoshop/InDesign, and have some experience with basic animation from a long time ago. Hope you can help!

Ok. When I started the pen tool, no new layer was automatically created as shown on the video. The pen tool is on the particle motion layer.

I can't connect the particle position to the position of my null object because I don't have that node option . Help

just press alt + left click on the position stopwatch, a spiral icon will appear :)

I had this problem and realised it was because I was using the wrong position property, I was using the transform position property instead of the position property in the Producer, this fixed it for me :)

Yes, this was it for me! Thank you! Also, make sure that you play it back when the particle is actually supposed to be moving. It stays still it’ll just look like a black ball

Please follow closely. Did you get the null object moving? to copy path of the shape layer line go to shape layer/contents/shape1/path1/ and inside is a path with stopwatch icon you have to copy that and paste on your null onbjects position.
