After Diesel - Battleship New Jersey

After Diesel is where one of the ship's two emergency diesel generators are located. These generators could produce enough electrical power to restart the electrical pumps to start the steam cycle and get the engines running.

There was a painting of Snuffy Smith on the fuel oil tank. Is it still There? It was likely painted in the 1940s. One of the jerks who manned the space (he shall remain nameless) tried to remove it with a needle gun in 1985. One of the guys repainted it like new as the outline and base colors were still visible.

BB 62. 4 X 110,000 HP steam turbine engines. 8 X 650 PSI boilers. 60,000 tons at 33 knots. 15,000 mile range on on board fuel. 19 X battle stars. Those steel fabrications for propellor shafts support are alone a fabulous example of the quality of the entire ship. Mind boggling engineering went into her from stem to stern. Philadelphia Naval Ship Yards 1942.

If it is an Alco 539 it looks like the 6 cylinder version which is usually 1000 HP or about 735 kW. Assuming a reasonably efficient generator, it should be generating between 550 kW and 600 kW of electricity. There should be a name plate on the generator with this info.

@@BattleshipNewJersey Actually, I believe that the propeller shafts are hollow and filled with sand. This is because a solid shaft would not only be very heavy, but the stress on the solid shaft could cause them to crack. By making them hollow, and locating the engines midships, the shafts can twist and take up that stress. I think they can twist up to one-and-a-half times over their length. See smartmechanicals.blogspot.com/2018/05/why-most-of-propeller-shafts-are-hollow.html

Sort of surprised they used an Alco 6 cylinder. Fairbanks-Morse opposed piston engines are still used to this day on military ships for both primary and standby power. Course, Fairbanks-Morse are taller engines-probably why the Alco was used.

They're not allowed to light the boilers and run the steam systems at all. Even if they were, it would take tons of work to get everything in working order. There's no money for that or for the fuel needed to run it.
