The tribe said the federal government agreed to transfer the land to them in a trust in the 1980s. It hasn't happened yet.

I wish you the best in your endeaver. Dealing with the Federal Government is very difficult unless you have millions of dollars to spend thru lobbyists. My Grandfather was 1/4 Cherokee from Hickory, NC. He inspired me to work for the National Museum of the American Indian, Smithsonian, in Washington, DC from 2000 - 2004.

As a native who lives less than a mile from Chota and tanasi my 8 grandfather is oconastata I am the 4 grandson of patsy tellico it’s our land and Tva flooded it all and clear cut the land before that it wasn’t for electricity it was to hide my history and all my clan’s history yet they build a museum for fort loudon and recreate it yet my family is depicted as evil because he lead his people by taking the fort from the British. He also predicted that the land would be flooded in five generations. The only thing on the land that was given back after flooding our land is a little island with the fort and a shrine to Sequoyah. Everything is is under 20 foot of water. Chota my home now known as Citico was the capital of my people before 1812. Sadly the other side of my family helped drive him and my ancestors out.

“Clingmans Dome (6,643 feet) We’ve already established this is the highest mountain in the Smokies. But it is also the third-highest point East of the Mississippi. Only North Carolina’s Mt. Mitchell and Mt. Craig rise higher. The site is host to a scenic overlook designed in the 1950s. It’s accessible by a paved, but steep trail. There are also several trails available from the Clingmans Dome parking area, including the hike on the Forney Ridge Trail to Andrews Bald. The 54-foot observation tower enhances those 360-degree mountain views from that height. On a clear day, it has some of the best views in the United States, expanding over 100 miles. Unfortunately, air pollution often limits viewing distances to under 20 miles. Weather conditions can also frequently affect views at higher elevations. Clingmans Dome Road closes through the winter months. However, you are allowed to hike in from Newfound Gap Road near the Rockefeller Memorial where FDR dedicated the park”

Thank you for posting this. I've walked up to Clingmans Dome many times while living on the Rez. On "clear(er) days it's a beautiful scenery looking over the mountains. I think that part of NC & TN is some of the most breathtaking scenery on Turtle Island. 👍🏽🪶

To me these people were the first to own this land , and I know that Treaty after treaty has been broken like glass , I myself am part Cherokee my grandmother was full blooded and she told me stories of how the Cherokee along with the Dakota , Oglala , Comanche too many to say we're treated so badly. And I agree !
