After Baltimore's bridge collapse, pilots at Houston's ship channel explain why their job is so ...

1,000 footers pass through the Sault Ste. Marie locks with 2.5 ft. of clearance on each side. The Baltimore channel provides more than one-half mile clearance on each side of the ship. I do not understand the width being a problem.

The truth of the crash may never come out, lest Insurance/Compensation be denied for the Pilots/officals erranous actions, when faced with a emergency situation,

In 1980 a freighter hit one of the bridge piers as well. Ships were a wee bit lighter back then, this ship was a neopanamax, as big as you can get and still fit inside the Panama Canal.

True. After investigation and ship found at fault(dah) their insurance should pay.

Damn! This was more an advertisement for the pilots than any actual scenarios. Talk about the 'Texas Chicken'. Why didn't they get that on film?

Given that most people don't know what a pilot is and frankly, only think there are pilots on airplanes, river and port pilots should be explained by those who know the field.

Everyone is innocent until and unless proved guilty. Are we caring for the crew and pilots, or are they left with zero pay and not allowed ashore? If it was a mechanical failure, the pilots must be going through hell.

It prevented a lot more deaths. They stopped traffic which means no one crossing the bridge fell in; it was only the workers whose vehicles were stopped in the middle of the bridge to begin with. Open a book and educate yourself.

@@rickss69 That's standard operating procedure. Educate yourself. They called for tugs after the initial power outage. The tugs couldn't make it in time. If you cannot tell us _why_ the power went out and how it could have been avoided, then sit back in your gamer chair, quietly.

@@grondhero that's one thing I'm waiting for the NTSB to answer, why the vessel lost prime power, hence headway. Without power, that's no longer a ship, it's a barge without a mover to guide it. But, they were Johnny on the Spot getting that emergency call to shut the bridge down, which saved a hell of a lot of lives. From the videos I saw, they lost power at the worst possible time, when even dropping an anchor couldn't help. I used that bridge many times when I was in the military, as we would be moving fuel and explosives in our convoy and that's the main hazmat route. Now, all hazmat traffic on the road needs to go 30 miles out of the way to go around all of Baltimore and commuter traffic either through town, around the city or use the tunnels. Meanwhile, the port is blocked, which prevents most of the cars imported for the East Coast from coming into the country, along with $20 billion a year in imports, losing tariffs for those goods as well. I did get a chuckle over the Houston pilot's take, yeah, Port of Houston is a wee bit different than Port of Baltimore. There's no room to install dolphins to protect the bridge piers and I'm unaware of any bumper system that can withstand a neopanamax hitting it. That's just way too much mass to protect against when it's moving. As a hint, in the USS Fitzgerald and MV ACX Crystal collision, Crystal weighed in around 1/3 of the Dali and nearly sank the US destroyer USS Fitzgerald. The Dali would've cut her clean in half and still continued forward with that much mass!
