After Action Review, Western KY Speedway Bluegrass Race

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We traveled to Western KY Speedway to do some Dirt Track Racing at the BlueGrass Race put on by the Ultimate Street Stock Challenge Series. These Crate Racing Street Stock racers running this series are the best of the best and there are sure going to make us earn our way into the show. We didn't make the feature this time but still learning and were successful in making a spring change at the track in a very short amount of time and having a car that improved every time we took it out on the track.

It's actually a full 3/8mile track but your right it's got tight corners for sure.... Won my first feature race at that track in 2003. its a tricky track to drive especially the track surface. That track has been rough and dry for 20 years lol

There is nothing I like better than that first trip around a new track I visit. I really enjoyed the friendliness of the team running the place and I will say, you learn to get around that joker in the slick you should be good to go at most tracks. It was a learning experience!

Heavy right front may have taken away from the right rear side bite is what I think you may have done ?

I'm not sure to be honest. The 550 was too soft in entry and I was plowing right through it during qualifying. I threw the 750 in and set the ride height back as close as I could. I felt like she was tight in and not dragging the left rear enough on deceleration so I threw two more rounds in and in the B main I do think it was rolling in much better. When I watch the video I am not turning very far to the left at entry but my gut says the wheel should still only be turned about half of that amount. Thoughts?

Maybe you’re over thinking it, are you using brakes to maybe drag it into the curves. I had to learn that brakes are your friend sometimes. I always wanted to use throttle to get me through the curve but it never worked worked out for me, slower means faster sometimes. Love your videos bud!!

I 100% agree with slowing down to speed up. Sometimes its hard int he heat of the moment to remember. In the b-main I was definitely doing some extended braking during entry but honestly I think the car could have stood to be freed up more and then slow down even further to get a better roll in. I have been chasing all around this set-up trying to find the sweet spot and I am not getting frustrated yet but I dang sure am good and ready to get this thing moving forward in the pack.

Hopefully will be building a load stick next. Spring smasher has to wait. Money money money even for parts to build this stuff myself.

It's kind of hard to tell from your in car camera but it looks like the front cars were really getting off of the corners good. They probably run there every week though. I love the videos and that you admitted that you may have run out of talent. Everyone does at some point they usually just blame it on something else. Nice to see the little lady helping out. She is probably going to want to take it for a spin pretty soon. That's what happened to me.

The daughter called dibs on the next in the seat :) That track had tricky dad gum corners. We saw a lot of nice cars getting tore up hitting the walls. But when ya hit the same wall two laps back to back . . . Yeah that was me

What gear ratio are you running?

I ran the 633 gear at Western KY Speedway. Seemed spot on.

I was told recently I need to be running a 688-690 on the 3/8 mile tracks.

Woooo, Thats A LOT of gear for a 3/8ths track. But it could depend on many different factors. A track with a tight turn that slows the car down significantly is going to take more gear than a track that is more rounded. Less banking is the same way. And then the class of car as well. If the class restricts speed enough through engine, tire, and suspension rules then that means the cars won't carry as much speed and therefore can have more gear. I haven't seen a true 3/8th mile track so far that a CRUSA street stock would be running a 683 or 688 ratio. In this class it's more like 567 to 633 on tracks up around that size but if car has an engine that is capable of turning enough RPMs then it's possible there may be some guys out there turning a 650 or 666 at 7500 rpms or more. Anything is possible. Here's something else to keep in mind. There are many many many tracks that declare their size based on an assumption, guess, or mathematical measurement of the outside wall all the way around the track. Keep in mind the real size of the track is the path you take around the track not a tape measure on that outside wall. Plenty of 1/4 and 1/3 mile tracks that everybody calls a 3/8ths. So you may have a track that everyone really is running gears up in the 683 to 688 range and it's listed as 3/8ths but reality is the track is somewhat smaller or a very slow shape. That could REALLY bite you if you decide to visit another track that is also listed as 3/8ths but actually is a true 3/8th in the path you run. Something to think about.

Looks like you got the wall both times same place now that's consistent ? Bad luck

The EXACT same spot. I thought I had a good line going and it was just a fluke the first time like loose dirt kicked up on the track but man o man it showed me when I came back around the next time. That track had a deathly slick groove going on in the entry for both ends and I was not good at all at negotiating it.

You're car just seems way too tight all the time to me, it does not transition well......you are turning left too much

I agree, the majority of the time I am seeking to free the car up. I made some changes to help this but I think I am past due on getting more aggressive with changes to get it freed up like I want. I felt like I was about there at the B main but that should be my tightest point and need solutions to be more free than that for tracks with grip.

@@DIRTRACELIFE It should be drive down in there, let off, press brake pedal, car transitions to RF and and RR, you should have to steer to right , pick up gas when fully transitioned, and the nose should be pointing towards infield no matter how hard you get on it. Your car always looks stuck on right side too much and way too dependent on using throttle to turn it. Thus, on the slick it just ends up lighting the tires up. It has the look of just not having enough LR in it. You gotta have enough LR/Cross so the car will easily turn at corner entry and transfer to RF to steer. I wish I knew how to exactly get there, been trying to get it down for 30 years...........
