After Action Report: Rye Field Model Tiger I Initial Production Early 1943 Tunisia in 1/35

Here is my After Action Report on the Rye Field DAK TIger. I finally got her together and can talk about the build quality. Overall I like it, it has some inaccuracies, but for the price it's an amazing buy.
I rated the kit in this video a 4 out of 5, which might seem odd since there are glaring errors. I must admit that perhaps that was a little too high, but I was rating as a Tiger enthusiast and judging what I got for the price. Every Dragon kit I get of a Tiger requires a minimum of $20-$40 Aftermarket for the tracks. This kit only required me to use up some spare parts. So I rated it as high as I did, perhaps on a curve, because I think it's a very big step in the right direction. It's got problems, but value for money, this kit has it.
Let's hope they fix their errors on the new 503 and continue to get better.
If you're going to buy and build this kit, please refer to the list of errors on David Byrden's website Tiger1.info
tiger1.info/models/products-pa...
Noticed since I filmed it, I forgot the spare antenna tube and loaders hatch handle...You always forget something.

    There's a hobby shop boss in Hong Kong told me that that kit had been sold more than 300 boxes. He said that most modelers don't really care about accuracy because they just want to have fun. As a business man point of view, he is right. But if accuracy is not important even wrong, then I should keep building my favorite science fiction models Maschinen Krieger.

  • @AdamMann3D

    +chun hung hardy mung I think accuracy is important to some far more than others. I think American modelers like myself tend to be a little rivet county and accuracy obsessed whereas from what I've seen Asian modelers seem to have more fun. I get a lot of enjoyment out of this constant pursuit of the perfect model. I know it'll never be perfect, but knowing that I'm accurately recreating something that once existed really seems to spark my passion. And that's what's important. If Maschinen Kreiger inspires you, than that's what you should build.

    Adam, I love your reviews. You look at kit reviews in positive way and show the pitfalls and highlight's to any kit. The tracks look great as you say, I have just completed two sets of Fruimodel tracks one for a Dragon Elefant and the other for the Tamiya T55 Enigma. Its time consuming but I feel well worth it, but the price is high as you say. Keep up the work

    Loving your videos. Question, which brand and version would you recommend for a good early production 1/35 Tiger? I mean most accurate in scale and relatively good details. I just build a Tamiya one, but don’t really like it due difficult to align the suspension arms perfectly coz cut points of the parts on the sprue are right at the joins between arms and the hull.

    Hey Adam I found a few inaccuracies with the possibility of doing the 121 tiger. In a photo I found the tow cables are laid out in the “post initial” manner with she shackles at the front where as the kit has the dak layout of shackles at the back. I’m confused as to how this is possible because the photo also depicted the front fenders as dak (smaller rounded). Is this an anomaly or something? I’m assuming that the cable config couldn’t have been changed as it would require re welding the guides on the deck of the tank. Please advise! Thanks!

  • @daveybyrden3936

    @daveybyrden3936

    Only about 17 Tigers had the thin cable with its ends at the rear of the tank. Tiger "121" of 501 in Tunisia already had the thick cable with its ends at the front. p.s. although Rye Field lay out their cable in the "thin" way, the cable parts in their kit are for the "thick" cable, that is, they're too big to be the "thin" cable.

    Great review as always, This kit does have it issue's , BUT like you said, with just alittle TLC it will turn out fine, I don't think there is a Dragon Tiger I out there that does not have its issue's, So for the price it is hard to beat this kit, But this is just myhumble opinion , and I am no expert, With the New Dragon DAK on the horizon and with what I heard about the corrections they made, we shall see, I really wish they would put corrected Magic Tracks in the kit, I do know some people like the DS version's but with the sloppy packing and them getting crushed, what's the point, I say put both " Corrected " Magictracks and DS and let the builder decide which version to use, I mean the kits are hitting the $80.00 mark anyway, :)

    your so right, some kits just drive you nuts, with all the little bits, I have the over engineered tigers from dragon, just don't know, if I want another over engineered tiger. my build knowledge of all tiger kits, except this one. just gets you thinking, NOT ANOTHER ONE. in your opinion, is it worth getting to build, or is it just a stash queen? BTW I really like your feifel air filters, you ever think about making them in resin? cool review.

  • @AdamMann3D

    @AdamMann3D

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Clayton McClain I have thought about printing Feifels and then casting them in Resin, but when Dragon put out the 131 kit which had great styrene ones I lost my drive to do that. I think this is actually a decent build, not a shelf queen, but does require some love. If you have lots of Dragon Tigers you don't need it. I just have a compulsion to build all things Tiger.

    Adam, very correct on the gun barrel, it is not just off, it is way off, the mantlet is off as well according to the book I haveWaldemar Trojca Technical and operational history, it has 1/35 scale drawings , while I am not a every nut in the right place guy, I did correct it with a RB Productions barrel, with a small mod to the mantlet, in my opinion though, unless it is sitting next to a tiger model with the correct size barrel , most would not notice, Just thought I would pass it along.

  • @AdamMann3D

    @AdamMann3D

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Tony Quinn I agree about the barrel. I have it sitting next to a number of other 1/35 Tigers so it's pretty noticeable. The mantlet as far as I know is a possible DAK initial mantlet but not the only one seen in Africa, and incorrect for some marking options.

    Ah now I understand why I have 4 different types of side plates in this 503 kit they have obviously fixed that fender issue now with that being there next kit! I'll definitely watch out for that and what one I'm using that's a good bit of info there! If you want to a do a more accurate one now get the Early Eastern front 503 kit it's the same kit everything has been rectified by what you have said in this full video it's been very interesting! I've just edited my comment after testing the 4 side armour plates fornthe hull fenders and they now fit correctly with the angled fenders the square bolt hole fitments are in different places now when lined up with the original one's in this kit so anyone who wants to do a DAK I would got with the 503 Eastern front kit to build this kit now! Just don't buy this kit if you get same updated parts in 503, only thing you don't get is them front PE fender plates!? Where they added from a dragon kit yourself?

  • @AdamMann3D

    @AdamMann3D

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Martin Collmer I thought about that, which is why I didn't fix them. I'd cut off the bolts on the hull that were wrong and correct them, and I think you'd either have to use another companies Fenders (Tamiya maybe) of after market brass ones from Voyager, In which case you'd get PE for the hull bolts as well. That is an expensive option, which is why I didn't bother. If you did though, the dimensions match Dragon better than Tamiya, so aftermarket meant for Dragon would be better.
