    I agree with everything. I lived in Spain for 21 years (and grew up there) and I've been living in US for 1 year and a half. I swear this country has been reducing my lifespan. My fashion sense is worse and I feel really tired in general. And the food... oh my god, the food. I used to like eating outside. Not anymore. And I don't eat bread unless I make it myself. Now I'm saving to come back to Spain. Wish me luck! 😂

    I am Dutch and i am sure that all the things you mentioned are not only in Spain but almost every European country. The only differences in, for instance, the food are that in the south of Europe there are more meditaranian based dishes then in the Northern parts of Europe. But most European countries eat healthy and have a excellent work life balance and long vacations. I hope it stays this way for decades to come.

    Same thing in Finland. Food is different, but clean and fresh and everything are made from scratch mostly. Cooking skills are valued in all over Europe and many times home cooked dishes are even better than in restaurants.

    As a German who has lived in the US, UK, in Italy and Belgium and has spent time in at least half of the other European countries I am aware of how major differences between European countries can be. Therefore I would never talk about Europeans as having a common lifestyle. Inspite of that you pinpointed some common denominators really well. I certainly appreciate the good work-life balance. Most people I have met treat their spare time and vacations as sacred. Personally I take a lot of unpaid holidays, every 6 weeks or so I take a few days off, I take 2 weeks off around Easter, same around Christmas and 6 weeks in summer. A lot of that time is dedicated to volunteer work and improving my languages. I am on my number 8, Ukrainian. Unlike most people I do not spend a lot of time eating out in restaurants, but I do enjoy sitting in cafés with friends or colleagues. I cook only fresh food and invite friends for home-cooked meals probably once a week. I ride the bike around Brussels and have a fairly modest lifestyle combined with a good salary, which means I do not need credit cards or loans and when I need money for travel and investments....it is simply there.

    One thing I have noted watching a number of videos like yours is that Americans are so surprised that life in Europe is so much different from what people think it is. People in Europe have a much better life, because they don´t hjave to worry about health care, have a much better work-life balance, a better support in old age, better food, less fear of falling victim to a crime and, which is the icing on the cake, more freedom than the people in the US! For some of us, the American Dream is a veritable nightmare!

  • @Soff1859

    @Soff1859

    I think the american dream as a concept is quite indisputably good. Its just that its ironically much easier to achieve in europe. There was this study on social mobility (so how likely a person born poor is to end up becoming upper income) and the US was the worst out of all 7 countries studied. Because if a health problem or lawsuit can just cost you a few hundred thousand and getting a degree definetly costs you a few ten thousand at least (for a bad one), then its muuuch harder to actually make it. Among other things.

    I’m German and I am married to a Spanish woman and we spend most of our vacations in the north of Spain. I agree completely with everything you said and it will definitely make a difference in terms of life expectancy. But there is another reason for the lower life expectancy in the United States versus Europe. It’s the bad healthcare system. Many people are afraid to pay too much money for the ambulance and then often call the ambulance too late. Or people avoid going to the doctor and take self medication, to save money. So, they miss out to get a proper diagnosis. That way severe illnesses are not detected - once they finally go to the doctor with severe syndromes, it’s in many cases too late, and they die. Funny enough many people still celebrate the great private healthcare system in the US…

  • @MrDudoProudfoot

    I agree. What the girl says is true (especially regarding the mediterrenean area) but without a free national health system the life expectancy wouln't be so different. Unfortunately, in many countries (this is true, at least, for Italy) they are slowly but steadily dismantling it. We are not fully aware of what we are losing. I would also add to the equation that family bonds here are still (although the tide is changing) very important. They often make the life of elderly people worth living.

  • @Opa_Andre

    @Opa_Andre

    @@MrDudoProudfoot I agree but the national health systems in Europe aren't "free" - you pay a fair amount of tax of your income and many Americans hate to have to pay those taxes. There are a few very good videos about this topic, for example from the channel "Black Forest Family" regarding this topic. I at least remember 2 of them comparing income of Americans and Germans in general and another one regarding a more specific comparisation of an average McDonald employee in the US and Germany. Really worth watching.

    @@Opa_Andre The whole thing is what the Americans can't or won't understand. They are reluctant to pay taxes, but what we europeans pay in taxes for healthcare we get back. Only the Americans have to pay everything out of their own pocket, and this money is missing for other things. Is actually a logical thing, for Americans incomprehensible, but can be absolutely very very expensive.

  • @MrDudoProudfoot

    @MrDudoProudfoot

    11 ай бұрын

    @@Opa_Andre certainly the word "free" can have different meanings. In England they say "there no such thing as a free meal" (and variations on the theme). NHS is no exception to that. But healthcare is one of those areas that, in my opinion (another one is the access tpo the water), have not to be privatised and left to the market. This can be proven by looking at what happened during the pandemic. In Italy the health system is partially privatised and during the lockdown the privates almost stopped to provide services because it was insanely expensive and these company are just interested iun making profits. At the end of the day the Italian regions (health system is governed at regional level here) which performed best were not those with the largest percentage of private companies. The same can be said about the water (look at what happened in the US or is urrently happening in UK).

To their credit, more and more tourists seem to have figured out that taking the time to sit over a meal and savour it is part of the European experience. I'm always impressed to see the lengths groups of teenagers here go to set up a nice picnic together by the Seine or in a park: napkins, wine, mineral water, cups, bread and a couple of nice dishes.

    I have seen pribably hundreds of similar videos of americans analyzing european lifestyle and explaining why it is better and going one by one through differences. The experiences are almost universally the same, no matter the age, race or gender of said americans. Even after seeing as many videos and heard so many times the same points being repeated, I still get surprised how completely normal things are not normal in the US. I had thought that cooking a meal at some point in the day and eating it together with your family would be an universal human experience that isn't even worth mentioning, literally every culture in the world does it, it is the most human thing ever. And even such a basic thing like eating a meal together isn't a thing that all anericans do apparently. Many people in america do not eat together with their family 🤯 Or maybe they do it once a week on sundays I guess. That means that they eat around 20 meals a week alone. That is so incredibly sad. And to think how many millions of americans are there who live their lives the way this girl explained is even more sad. Being overworked, exhausted, sleep deprived, lonely, depressed, anxious, overweight... and not even having the basic small luxuries of life like having coffee with friends on a random tuesday, or dinner with your dad, or sitting outside in a park with your grandma, or just normal sunday lunch with extended family or a week at the beach during may because you had a few days off.... And none of these things cost that much, it isn't about money. And then someone tells me US is a first world country... I am so sad for all the americans that are missing out so much of their lives...

    depends what you do and where. A lot of Europeans are not happy, they are just resigned and go by inertia knowing that the State takes care of them if they need to and get benefits and all. @alkemystica I would say europe is very entrepreneurial, anyone who has ambition and will to make money can do it, and there is a huge amount of very rich people in eueope who didn't inherit their money. And it has the added benefit of being able to sell your peoducts in the entire EU, which is a huge market. The difference is there are also laws that will protect the worker as well so that while one person is making a lot of money, the other doesn't lose their rights, so it very balanced. When it comes to benefits, it is not really true. Most people will do everything to not receive benefits and would much rather pay the tax than to receive help. Some countries do have problems with refugees, asylum seekers, and other immigrants not working, but that is a small number compared to the majority of the population. And the freedom you are talking about is something that you can feel in the air here in Europe. It gives you everything you could ever wish for. All the opportunity is here.

    @@myflyingkidney I was born and raised in the EU and lived in the USA. Have you ever lived there? There is no way Europeans are more freedom minded than Americans. No way. Or at least most of them are not. Having the State as a babysitter is not freedom. The red tape in the EU is crazy so are taxes. I agree though the healthcare in the EU is more accessible, however a lot of public hospitals dont have a high standard so many people still go private. I think experiencing the best of both worlds is a good mix.

    Of all the things you named (agree with all of them), the one that makes a massive difference with the US is food. Not only the origin of that food (in the US it's mainly processed food, genetic food, industrially farmed, etc., whereas in Spain it's easy to find meat from free-range living cattle, fresh fish, small farming vegetables), but also the way you cook that food, in a simple grilled way, without so much sauce and with junk food being an almost prohibited thing akin to smoking 😉🍷 Great video, Rachel 👍

    Nice video as always. There is another important fact in Europe for a healthy life, and it is the Public Health Sistem. I have only been once to USA and don't really know the reality of the american health sistem, but in my opinion, there in the States if you don't have a really good private health insurance it is difficult and expensive to be treated in the hospital, so there are people who delay going to a doctor as long as possible, which sometimes leads to the abuse of painkillers and other medications. IMO the public health sistem (as well as the public education) is one of the most important service citizens have in Spain (and in the hole European Union).

    The healthcare system is secondary to the healthy lifestyle. If you live a healthy lifestyle then you don't need to go to hospitals. The US has a treatment epidemic there are medicines for every ailment being peddled 24 hrs a day on TV. But as the saying goes 'prevention is the best medicine', eat healthily, exercise and lower stress levels and you wont need 90% of the things advertised on TV.

    I can se the 3rd place thing being a problem in the US, compared to Europe. In Europe there are mixed use neighborhoods, so you can walk to a bar or restaurant, or use public transport to get in to the town center and home again. But in the US you have your zoning laws, and the suburbs, no real public transport, so you have to drive every where, there is no bar or restaurant you can just walk to. Driving is a big cause of stress. So going to the 3rd place causes the stress, which you are trying to get away from, by going to your 3rd place. Also if you go to a restaurant in Europe, because the staff are paid better then the US, you are not being rushed to finish your meal, so they can get someone else to serve and get another tip. In Europe under 2 hours, out at night, is a rushed meal. Europeans like to take there time, chat with friends, they do not want the server coming up every 5-10 minutes to find out if they are ready for the next course or how the meal is/was, basically trying to get us out of the door as quickly as possible.

    Hi! Holidays in (I guess all of) Europe are a RIGHT. In Spain you are entitled to have one month of PAID* holiday a year! Normally you have 2 + 2 weeks depending on your job and the production standards of your sector. Add to this the 9 public holidays set by the government: if one of them is close to the weekend, you will probably have 4 days off! Perhaps the main reasons for me to live a longer and healthier life here are: - National Health System. When you get sick, break a bone, have a pain, etcetera, you just go to your doctor or to the emergency room in a hospital... and you will come back home with the same money you already had. - We don't eat tons of junk food (pizzas, burguers, ultra-processed food, industrial pastries, less sugar, salt and transgenics fats everywhere...). We like to eat fresh and cook at home. To finish this comment... We don't have a communist country in Europe, but left-wing parties and social protests have won a lot of rights for the people. When you are fired you have the right to receive a compensation for the time you spent in the company, a 15 days notice of firing and the right of a limited payment from the State while you are unemployed. Write this down in your brain for the next elections. The USA is one of the richest countries in the world, but in the hands of a few, while you, the citizens, are mere numbers, disposable slaves. * Working in Spain you will get your monthly salary plus at least two extra payments (summer and December); so, 14 payments. If you don't have them as extra, you will have them prorated in your monthly salary. Extra! You can't be fired while if you have a sick note in Spain.

And there was a doctor in every single village, no matter how many people lived in the village. And doctors had enough time to assist every patient, not like now. -Affordable healthy food: “Menu del dia” was implemented during Franco regime as a mandatory 3 course menu at every restaurant so workers could have an affordable and healthy way to feed themselves. What will be next? Lefties invented the wheel?? Not a fan of Franco here but it’s disgusting seing lefties trying to sell the idea that every single good thing is because of them… By the way the region with the highest life expectancy in Spain is Madrid and the region with the best Health system is Madrid too. Left wing parties have not governed in Madrid region for the last 30 years and (probably, fingers crossed)will not govern Madrid region for the next 30 years either… These are facts, stop fooling people please.

    @@GatitosygatitosThat is if you work for a company that complies with the law. You have a right and you often have to demand compliance. There are court rulings against companies that tried to pay you for the days without taking the holidays. There are many cases in which they simply leave them accumulated so that they are forgotten and lost: the law says that compulsory holidays must be taken in the current year (come what may, they cannot be compensated in any other way) or they are lost; very rarely there are agreements to add them to the following year. I am quite familiar with the "Estatuto de los Trabajadores" (Statute of Workers' Rights) and a few "Convenios Colectivos" (collective bargaining agreement) and, unfortunately, some of these laws I have learned by taking a few companies to Court. One law in my City is: you can not drive over 30 Km per hour inside the city center. You already know the rest... ;)

    One of the reasons for our longevity is to have an excellent free and universal public health service for all life. Personally I think that it is much more important than having the best army in the world and of course that it is much cheaper and profitable and has much more impact on the lives of citizens (and yes, I said citizens, not consumers). All the best!! Apart fron that, In general i think you get the point why we live more than people in US. In general we are less focused on run and be stressed bcs the pressure at work, as well as enjoying the little moments during the week or travelling with family and friends. About the sizes, on clothing as well as on food and drinks people in US prefers big size howrver in Europe we prefer tiny size that fit well. About cooking from scratch, you have a huge advantage learnt on Masterchef 😂😂 oncr again absolutely agree with you. And about the point of learning diferents languages, you get the point because in my case as spaniard I speake English French Italian German(this one still improving my level) and learning Russian. It's true. They are some good advice, and it is not as hard work as it seems. It is simply a matter of proposing it. It´s worth it. Without a doubt, health is the most important thing. I think this video will extend the lives of many people (y serán más felices, porque, sin duda, saborear una tortilla de patatas hecha por uno mismo es como estar en el cielo...)🙂 Bravo, Rachel! Nice video! Serías una gran presentadora de un programa sobre salud en la tele.

    Just as an example, in Switzerland it is mandated by law that you take at least 2 weeks of your PTO in one block in a year. You HAVE to take 2 weeks of time off (out of 4 weeks we get by law a year). Most companies give 5 weeks of time off. Also, over-time is to be taken as time off. If that is not possible due to temporary workload you can have it paid out, but it is frowned upon. It's really not surprising that the USA has a mental health and obesity crisis. And regarding the work week and weekend thing, I actually prefer to do stuff during the week. I am out of the house anyway so I squeeze as much as I can into a week day. The weekend is for relaxing and doing (or not doing) anything I want.

    Same thing in Finland. Food is different, but clean and fresh and everything are made from scratch mostly. Cooking skills are valued in all over Europe and many times home cooked dishes are even better than in restaurants (at least i´ve developed such skills). I rarely even eat in restaurants anymore becouse i´ve been disapointed so many times and noticed that i can do better and three to four times more for same money. I also have my own restriction being on ketogenic diet / having a life style. So even better for the health to ditch carbs. Even thou type two diabetes is not so common in Europe than in US, everybody should consider that object for sake of own health. That would lower the need of medical care more than anything else and would also save lot of tax payers money in the long run. I recommend to everyone who have high blood sugar or is over weight. Easy way to drop both down alot.

    I heard a french guy on youtube saying that human diet has changed more in the last 60 years than in the previous million years. In any case it is good to have an slower pace of life (although, unfortunatelly, I don't follow it all the time), which is typical not only of Spain, but the mediterranean basin in general (Italy, Greece, etc). It is possible that my dear Spain is a country of very long life expectancy, nevertheless I think that the record was in Japan (although associated to rural people). As a spaniard I celebrate that you're enjoying your life in Spain.

    Hello. I've been watching your videos in Spanish and Ana's for a long time and I really like them. For contributing... the issue of diet and depression is being studied. There are studies, for example, that change the diet of the participants and improve their depression. One of the keys is not to eat processed food. Better a diet based on vegetables and other healthy foods. I did my dietitian thesis on this subject, in my case, for example, when I added omega 3 to my diet, I discovered that I felt much better, before I knew that it was already used in psychiatry as a food supplement with evidence, not used alone, but in cases of deficiency, there can probably be a big difference. It is an interesting topic.

    Hi Rachel. First of all, sorry if my English is not very good. I jumped here just by chance but, just wanted to share with you some things from a Spaniard point of view: 0.- 1st Home. 2nd Spend time on the streets. 3rd Work. I work to live; I don't live to work. 1.- I don't have working days; I have working hours. When I finish them, free time begins for me. 2.- We are very social. We need to keep in touch with our friends. Not virtually, I mean. 3.- I'm from Granada, southern Spain, land of Tapas. We can't miss a chance of getting a free tapa in a bar sitting on the street and enjoying a funny conversation with friends. 4.- Mediterranean food is very good and very healthy so that helps to live longer than in other countries with a less healthy food... 5.- Joy. We tend to be warm, funny people. We love enjoying the small pleasures in life and take some time to do it. That also helps to live longer. 6.- Free Health care. We do not need to lose our whole savings if we get ill or need a surgery. 7.- We have from 20 to 30 days payed vacation during the year. Correct me if I am wrong but in USA you have like 2 weeks, maybe? I really hope you are having a wonderful time here in Spain. If you haven't already, please visit Granada, Córdoba and Andalucía in general (not in summer, under sun death penalty, unless you are comming to beach areas) Best for you

    This was a nice video explaining the lifestyle differences between Americans and Europeans. As a dual citizen of Italy and the US, I currently live in the US but in accordance with European principles, values, and practices. Regarding the food, one of the biggest differences is GMOs are banned in the EU, while they're on everyone's dinner plate in the US. GMOs, by design, are engineered to be resistant to glyphosate-based pesticides, so crops are doused with it and it gets absorbed into the flesh of the plant through the roots - it can't be washed off! Glyphosate increases cancer risk dramatically and is a neurotoxin. When you're sinking your teeth into a fresh ear of corn in the US, you're ingesting glyphosate. One must buy organic food in the hopes of having less toxins in it. So, in the US, even when preparing food from scratch, as you wisely suggest, you're still consuming chemicals that kill. This is one of the many factors contributing to the decline in longevity in the US, as well as compromising the health of those who manage to survive!
