Africans are NOT "Black." The Many Races of Africa

Комедия

Many people may think of all Africans as a single, monolithic race, however, many different races populate the African continent, and they do not like to be confused for each other.
Go check out the Iconoclast's channel: / channel
In this episode, I talk about some of the major racial groups in Africa, along with their appearances, characteristics , and where the live. I love learning about different cultures and places, and I love sharing this information even more. I hope you learn something new while watching and share it with a friend!
Disclaimer For some reason, when people come to my channel they assume that I hate Black people. I am actually part Black myself, and hold nothing but respect for people until proven otherwise. If you're ever watching one of my videos, please watch the entire thing, and realize I am never trying to demonize a certain racial or ethnic group. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!

there is no such thing as a white African there is no such thing as a black African us Africans don't see color we see different ethnic group we don't look at each other with the intentions of saying this person is black or this person is white we can distinguish people through different features different languages and different cultures westerners always seem to like to individualize people through their color of skin which is kind of ridiculous because skin color has nothing to do with "DNA" or " genetics" the whitest person in your terms can have more black DNA then what his skin may entail

Just like Dominicans are Hispanic (Speak Spanish), but they are Black. Hispanic is their Ethnicity, most people in the World go by their Ethnicity. It was the Hon. Let me hit you with a little story, my guy. I'm sure you can tell from my pic that I am a white guy. But, I have always be wildly attracted to black women. (My wife is black and we have 3 beautiful mixed-race children together). Anyway, I am a particular flavor of white. I am Nordic. I'm a Viking, and super proud of that. Plus, my grandfather hammered Viking culture and pride into myself, my siblings and my cousins our entire childhoods. When I eventually met my wife and we were dating, I'd occasionally start talking about my culture. Then she said something to me that I will never ever forget. She said, "Baby, I love how passionate you are about your heritage. But, I need you to know that, as a black person in America, I don't know my background like that. And, it kinda hurts my heart." (I paraphrased. But, you get the idea...) When she said that, it kinda messed my head up. Because, a lot of what I love about myself I attribute to the blood of the violent, rapist, snow-bullies that I am descended from. (Haha... I say that because I understand ANY culture has some horrors in its past. Especially mine). My point is twofold. 1) Where you come from is nice to know. But, it certainly doesn't have to define you, or your future. 2) You could get an exome sequencing done, find where your ancestors are from and study those groups of people. That's what we did for my wife. Then I got to learn about a bunch of badass ancient African cultures. Then we went to Africa, which was AMAZING. OK, be safe bro. ✌🏻

If you did diligent research you would know that the people's of the south pacific were some of the first migrants to leave the African continent. They actually share many of the quintessential phenotypes like broader noses, curly hair, physical strength .........oh and their abundance of melanin. The Negritos formed the indigenous population of Southeast Asia, including your Australia and New Zealand. Negritos were the first people to live in the Myamar, Cambodia, Indonesia. Migrants from the Hindu Kush and Andaman Islands helped populate modern day China. The Jomon (africans) founded in Japan 14,000 to 300 BCE. The Chinese and Japanese cuneiform or writing originated from African based "oracle bone"......was perfected by the "black" Shang dynasty and modified later by the Qin. My point is..the genes causing people to have melanin in their skin all come from Africa.

Agreed. Understanding ethnic groups are actually critical in dealing with modern day issues. Yet Americans especially treat it as a taboo in Academia due to the early 20th century perversions of the subject. If we want to help anyone internationally, we should probably first actually understand what's most important to THEM rather than ourselves. If we. want to help save people from civil wars, genocides, etc, we should probably understand why such things exist. But that would require studying the "icky" subject of ethnicity and racial divisions.

We don't have the same culture, we don't enjoy the same traditional music (some come as a culture shock), we have different foods, different traditions, behaviours and ways of thinking. Just because we have the same skin color, does not make us the same people, just like the Germans and Swedish or French, Spanish, Italians, Romanians people in Europe. They are not the same and are proud of their uniqueness. A monolithic world would be boring. Diversity allows us to have different angles of opinions, debates and enriches us as being a colourful, creative and exciting world

  • @Mbrace818

The way I see it, there's "race" and there's "ethnicity". Race is a much more broad and much more arbitrary term, and it tends to mean entire continental groups (e.g. Black African, White European, Asian etc..). It's mostly a social construct. Where as ethnicity usually comes down to single specific cultural and ancestral populations. What you say about Africa being made up of many ethnicities, that also goes for the other racial continental groups. E.g. China alone has several ethnicities like the Han Chinese, Tibetan Chinese etc... But we still say they're Asian. Japanese and Thai look a lot different, but they still have the "Asian" look, so we say they're Asian. Irish and Swedish look different, but we still say they're "White" etc. It goes on and on.

The so-called black African "race" is actually a bunch of very different people that some ignorant Europeans decided to label as mostly one. You start with a bad premise, you end up getting into nonsense discussions about how many races of people there are on a particular continent.

When people refer to all people from Europe as "white" is to assume they're all one homogeneous ethnic group. But don't realize that Europeans are divided into major ethnic groups, with branches in those groups: Celtic, Germanic, Hellenic, Slavic, Baltic, Italic, Hispanic, Basque, Sami, Finno-Uralic, etc. Even to the point that our ethnic makeup is so diverse, our hair, skin, and eye color vary greatly, with a varying facial and body structures, even though Europeans are all Caucasoid.

Agriculture started at around 12000 BCE and reached an apex by 8000 BCE. metallurgy was present in the form of iron smelting between 1300-1200 BCE.

Most people already knows that all modern day Africans are not black in color. The problem is the these people are automatically referred to as African instead of their individual nationalities. Africa is a continent. Another thing is, you mean South Africa was colonized. Most African on the continent are black. Europeans are also mostly white but do not look alike and are different shade. There is a lot of generalizing in this video. The real question is do you know this from actual anthropological experience or did you just “read about it”? Another thing that people must remember is that race is a new, made-up idea used for stratification purposes.

We South Africans don't call ourselves black, we refer to ourselves by cultural or linguistic grouping, official forms list us as Africans which is confusing since technically everyone born on the continent would be one but the government got tired of people ticking the box labeled "other" for ethnicity and putting down African in pen on the line that follows on official forms/questionnaires. The term black is a hold over from apartheid and sometimes includes other people of non-African descent like Indians and Chinese people but always specifically excludes Europeans or people of European descent, and we use it as a term of understanding and grouping but not necessarily as one of identity. If you ask a "black" South African what they are or identify as, the answer will be a cultural group, a tribe or a clan name, if you get black as an answer then it's likely that the person you're talking to thinks that that is the answer you will understand because most of the world uses the term.

What I meant by "black" sometimes including non-Africans I hoped could be understood through my use of the word "Apartheid", because of this institution the definition of black in South Africa almost always requires context (which I tried to imply). For example, other non-whites are classified as black for the purposes of B.E.E (Black Economic Empowerment) and as such are eligible for benefits, I'm not sure a legal definition of black will suffice for you but it does for most people.

A lot of misinformation in this video. The Congolese don't look down upon the 'pygmy' population, and the 'pygmy' are not hunted down either. 'Bantu' is also not an ethnic group, nor is it a name that any native African person calls themselves. And the people you call 'Bantu' do not look the same. There are a few other things you got wrong, but I just wanted to point out those three. I recommend that next time you make a video about African ethnic groups, talk to actual African people to get some info, as well as consult some texts written by well respected African historians and scholars. You won't get any real info from European historians. There's already a ton of misinformation about Africa getting passed around, so it would do you good to dig carefully and consult the right people and sources.

People in these comments have taken sooo much of what mason has said here totally out of context cus they are too sensitive and scared to have a conversation about race and diversity. Now while I do feel mason underestimates modern idealogoy of "blackness" in africa, I understand what hes getting at and its absolutely right(im black by the way). Sure in some context we may all see ourselves as "black" or afro centric or whatever. But on a deeper level there are clear cultural and sometimes racial barries that come up even amongst africans. That doesn't mean we cant be well off now but blackness is a very new and 21st century concept that never previously existed. And mason is just trying to make sure we appreciate the diversity of african people and not lump togther just to make silly points for our conspiracy theories.

Please stop spreading the illusion of race that is in America or else where to Africa and its people. Your knowledge about Africa appears to be the one that can be found in books or websites written by people who do not know about Africa. The terminology "Black" itself was socially engineered.I do not know any African tribes that refer to people by their skin color in their language (dialect). I know that you have a desire to grow your knowledge about the world and i appreciate the time you took making this video. However, to start to know about Africa, learn about its History thousands of years before the slave trade and what came afterwards. Start from the history of Kemet (Ancient Egypt). Girl Bye! if we were so united the white man wouldn't have been able to divide and conquer us so easily! If we were so united there wouldn't have been so many tribal driven wars after independence from various colonies, I mean look at South Sudan they fought for independence for so many years from Sudan only to turn around and kill each other because what? If we were so united back in the day (like 30 - 50 years ago) our grandparents wouldn't have given our parents shit for marrying into the tribe next door, You still find this in uber-traditional families. The concept of black unity is an American thing, when one race is the status quo (in this case black), humans will find a reason to divide themselves. I love Africa more than I love myself but to say we are united because of our race is a proper joke. 500 years of white invasion has opened our eyes but not enough to unite us under one race.

That is the thing, the so called black people are proud of who they are, and their complexions, it is the racist stereotypical people that is always trying to divide them with their lies, or trying to tell people dark as some Africans that they are Caucasian or something else, glad people are waking up and is rewriting some of their racist thinking of others and is correcting the lies! Most people in North Africa that is light skin ancestors are from other parts of the world, and were mixed with others, and is the youngest of all of the first people, just like in the Americas all mixed people are the youngest racial group, no matter how much Europeans try to act as if they have been around for thousands of years, its not true! I think a lot of countries have been brainwashed in so many ways by Westerners, or Europeans that were very ignorant and racist people in the first place, and is why people need to educate themselves more, and not listen to their ignorance of others because most of them have always been racist towards dark skin people? You seem to be very mature and have an open mind! "Keep them straight!

Lord have mercy. Some inaccuracies. Horn of Africa is not exclusively Cushite, in fact many Ethiopians/Eritrieans are semetic, not cushite. Example, Oromos, Somalis, are cushite, amhara and tigray are semetic. On top of this, while its true some Ethiopians don't associate with being "black", I wouldn't go so far as to generalize this to being "anti-african", or to ethiopians broadly. I'm very proud to be African, but don't identify strongly with the term "black" as it dilutes heritage, culture, language, as intended by Europeans and Americans in modern context

I wouldn't call it "races." I think that's a problematic word. It's variations of a type of people. Or maybe zones? The terms Negroid and Caucasoid weren't so inaccurate but they took on loaded political terms and are too limiting. There are people between those terms so I'm fine with looking at populations. I see all these groups you mention as Euro or Euro-Asian populations. Some are Afro-Euro populations.

First & foremost I am Eritrean, Habesha and I am proud & I won't forget my culture & my country but I'm also proud to be black, & I don't look down on anyone else, for we are all brothers & sisters. And in the end we come from one continent & are connected, & all God's children. Also Ethiopians, & Eritreans are not just Cushite but Semetic too.
