Because of your terrific reviews I have added new African violets to my collection. I’ve always had African violets my entire married life, but only a few at a time. Now at 80 yrs young I am up to 9 but still adding. Ness crinkle blue is always “out of stock” but it’s a must for me to have so I will keep trying. African violets ask very little of me but bring me such joy. Thank you for all your reviews

I’m interested in hearing more about your experience with Watermelon Snow. I see that variety on peoples’ AV wishlists all the time.

By far the most challenging variety in my growing experience. I have removed it from my collection, even though I do agree on its unique beauty.

I know you have your own soil recipe that i use but i was wondering if its better to keep the original soil with them that the grower uses? I know woodland bloom has their own recipe, or do violets make the transition easily with your recipe also, just wondering?

Great question! If you are certain that the native soil is pest-free, and it was freshly repotted before you received it, it’s ok to let it acclimate in the native soil. If those are unknown, I recommend repotting it upon arrival, with systemic insecticide granules added to the potting mix.

The Watermelon Snow that I brought from you in 2022 is thriving and growing. Yes, it's a fussy plant like Rose bouquet. What is the name of the plant with ruffle leaves on the left at 9:40? I love ruffled leaf plants. Thank you

I am so glad it’s doing well, thank you for sharing! I still grow Rose Bouquet, couldn’t part with that one! At 9:40 on the left is Ann (B. Bryant), she is a keeper!🌸

@grayturtleviolets I also struggled with Watermelon Snow needing special care. Those three mentioned are the three most difficult AVs I ever tried to grow.

@@Charity-vm4bt Watermelon Snow has been by far the most challenging one for me! Ann has been enjoying top-watering method, I too found it difficult to grow her, when she was wick-watered.

Thank you. I found a couple of vintage double pinks from LLG of their own hybrids that were easier to grow. A little fussy, but worth the effort.

This is another very helpful video!! Getting close to ordering time. And I am interested in growers of healthy plants. There are, no clubs or growers near me. Do you have growers that sell on ebay or do you have to bid on them? Thank you again.

It depends, some sell in buy now format, others in the auction format. My favorite suppliers all sell on their own websites, no bidding. Hope you get the varieties on your wishlist!

I went to a show/sale in Minnesota, and at the prices they wanted, I could not afford to buy plants. There are so FEW places that sell violets now.. I don’t understand.

Sorry to hear that! I bought at a show/sale a couple of times, when I had a chance to attend in 2019, it was reasonably priced then. Clubs are another great place to get named varieties, if you have one nearby!

@@grayturtleviolets Your video is for those who grow and understand that these are club plants by specific non-commercial growers who barely make a profit. It is a hobby. Not a commercial enterprise. The comment made is probably by someonevwho does not understand these are grown by private individuals at great personal expense to themselves. It is an expensive hobby. It is not for those who want plants grown inmass commercial consumption. It is so difficult to grow violets, people who do not grow them have no idea. It takes 9 months to grow a plant from a leaf that is worthy of offering for sale. I never understood why people don't just move on to buy another type of plant or buy a commercially mass- supermarket AV.
