Which one do you think your African violet needs? Light, Fertilizer, Re-potting, or Humidity?! 🌿

Thank you for your great explanation.
Your red flowers are amazingly beautiful! My friend told me she has her violets in the East window, no sooner I moved my one plant there then short time later I saw bloom stalks developing. I then acquired two more African violets, one of the violets had a spare growing on the side so after doing a lot of Internet research on African violets, I decided to buy some wick watering pots. I took the spare plant and put it in it’s original pot the size being a 4 in., the larger plant went into a 6 in. wick watering and has been amazing. It has been blooming nonstop for about 4 months and it is now just starting to finish up the blooming for right now. The other plants will be going into wick watering pots also as it has proven to be a good choice for African Violets in East windows. I very much enjoyed your video, thank you.
Love this video, straight forward and to the point. Thank you!

Excellent information.
Thank you for the info I’m bad about feeding them I will try that
This is very helpful video. Detailed, well explaned, diction is clear without annoying accent.
Very useful video ❤
Very helpful. I believe after watching your video that my problem is the right window light in summer. I will put mine in a north facing window. Thanks so much!❤
I enjoyed your show, learned a lot so I will do what I learn from you and wish me luck, I need my African violet to give me flowers, than you bye♥️👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
My African Violets love the grow light sitting next to my hydroponics system. I also use Optimara AV food- 1 packet mixed in a gallon jug. I use this every time I water. I also repot twice a year with AV mix I use 1:1:1 ratio peat moss, perlite and vermiculite. I add some horticultural charcoal to the mix. Bottom water only works for me. Each month I remove 1-3 older leaves which stimulates foliar growth. Do not overwater. I use the wicking method or water from the bottom. I’ll let my AV’s get a little thirsty before I water again. Sign of thirst is drooping leaves and pot feels light when picked up. I just love African Violets. They’re easier to grow than one thinks!
Thank you 🌺
We're in south Africa, and the soil was low, and we weren't watering enough. Thanks for the advice. 😅
miracle grow has a great african violet fertilizer in a purple bottle and I've had this bottle for years it lasts a long time. I feed mine every 3 weeks or so. you can also tell the nutrition level on some of the stems that they are all green or have a purplelish color. Some varieties are different, but generally this is true for most. Older stems will turn green over time but how quickly this happens depends on nutrients. The best pots are the self water kind. I refill the reservoir every 2 weeks. Takes about a week for the reservoir to dry and then I leave it another week to dry out. They don't like to be wet but they enjoy getting moist and then dry out.
Thanks for the tip! I am about to buy my first African Violets now because they look so pretty! 😁
Two days in a north facing window and I have little flower buds forming. Great advice, thank you!

Fertilizer and repotting
I think I need to repot
Light and fertilizer.
Thanks for this! I just bought a tiny violet, like 4" across, so I don't know what might have caused it to drop its blooms, but I bought it with a bunch of wilted blooms still attached. I removed those, and am gonna see if my window will give it the light it wants. It might also have been overwatered.

Thank you for this video ! I adore African violets❤. I have one I repot and gave light. It's blooming well but all the older leaves soften... I don't know why, maybe my soil have no proper nutrients, I fertilize with water but not too much. Maybe m'y soil is too dry...
@thegirlwithashovel

If you mean soften, as in mushy, then it's too much water. 👍
I think my plant is missing light. I will move it today and pray it blooms.🙏🏽
Mine does bloom year round
well, mine come into bloom in the cool months and flowers last for about 6 weeks before drying out. the room fluctuates low 50's to mid 60's during winter, and the light is the day length. i should try extending lighting to 12 hours and see if that makes a diff. DC summers must be too hot because the blooms are gone by may and reappear around december. also if i do get blooms in summer they may be gone in a week or so. so moving your violet into that window in winter may have dropped the temp enough to trigger blooms. i would say i expect cyclical blooming once a year and a kind of dormancy when temps get up, even though day length increases over 12 hours.

I'll have to experiment with various temperature triggers next! Thanks!
Out of 150+ potted plants, I only have one African violet. It was given to me from a friend that acquired it from her moms funeral. She’s very aware that she kills all plants and decided it was safer in my hands. For months, it never bloomed again. I did some research and like whenever possible for me, I try to choose a place outside. Many tell me they didn’t know many plants can grow outside. Yes… no plant originated indoors. So I moved my onto a table on a screened in porch faced east. I live on a lake in NC. So the increased light as well as any humidity coming from the lake I’m sure, has made a world of difference.

I'm glad you're able to keep it alive for her. That is very sweet. Sounds like it's doing well. And I bet if you hit it with a shot of African violet fertilizer now it'll start forming some buds!

@@thegirlwithashovel she already has several! I’ve always used the fertilizer but getting her light and humidity outside made it work. Our house facing the water is glass so it gets tons of light however, the windows are tinted a bit because of that.

lack of light is the most commone reason they do not rebloom
I have picked two small worms off of one of my African violet flowers that they were eating. What can I do about pests?
@thegirlwithashovel

I would get either a spray or a systemic. I'm not sure your preferences on organic or systemic safety, but I do recommend the Bonide pest killers. 😊
they also dont like poor air either, air circulation is essential

I came across your video today and had no luck with my african violet blooming after 8 years from the first bloom. I had transplanted it into a slightly larger pot but not a big one. The soil is hard and compressed because I used regular potting soil. How can I fertilize it short of transplanting it into a larger pot?
@thegirlwithashovel
3 ай бұрын
You can fertilize it with a flowering plant fertilizer that is water soluble, so you just add it to your watering can. 😊

My AV was blooming when I bought it. I repotted it in a self watering pot. The plant is perfect. But has not bloomed since. I ordered AV food today. Read dilute at half strength?
@thegirlwithashovel
2 ай бұрын
I would fertilize it according to the instructions. Different fertilizer are different strengths so it really depends...
clay pots are NOT good for african violets at all, if the leaves hang over the edge of clay pots, it can damage the leaves, so avoid clay pots for these plants.

Do you recommend one plant per pot? Or is multiple crowns per pot?
@thegirlwithashovel
Жыл бұрын
Either way would be fine as long as each crown has enough space. But I've mostly seen them sold as just a single crown per pot.
Why do the leaves of some AV’s grow in tight bunches? A new plant, after unwrapping it, had many extra plants within, I separated it after blooming & got Six extra plants off one! But a few months later, the main plant kept making extras, but it hasn’t bloomed again. It’s located in the sweet spot, next too other AV’s that bloom nicely, is this due to buying a poor quality “market” plant & why do they bunch up?
@thegirlwithashovel
7 ай бұрын
It just means your plant is in the "making babies" phase to put it generally. That's why it keeps making extras instead of flowering. I would try an AV fertilizer. That might kick it into flowering! 😊
My girl leaf violet gets everything my other (non girl) blooming flowers get. Should it be treated differently in any way? They all get morning sun a few hours, are wicked & get same fertilizer successfully.

for 2 years my violet has gotten a nice amount of sun and daylight. I'm not worried about the light. I continued to grow leaves all the time! little ones show in the center. I finally repotted it in violet soil and back into a smaller pot. When I peek into the center there is always a little leaf. Where are the flowers?

hello, please tell me what is wrong. i planted orange violet from seeds maybe 3 months ago, now it is 3-4cm high like a little bush, 10-12 little leaves but they are thin and not looking like typical violet leaves
@thegirlwithashovel
6 ай бұрын
Well it's hard to tell exactly without a picture but a few things... These plants aren't typically grown from seed because with seed you get a mixture of DNA so it won't be exactly like the parent plant. And depending on the seller, some seed is more "true to type" whereas some sellers will straight up give you an entirely different plant and pass it off as something crazy and cool (like the photoshopped rainbow roses seed for sale out there lol!) And second, growing from seed is difficult and you might be having smaller leaves due to it not getting enough bright, indirect light. But my bet is that the seed is not true to type. That's why it's a safer bet to lead propagate these plants. 🙃
