One of the most talented bands in the history of rock music.The women in the song is described as not being pretty but very desirable. The narrator was fascinated by her, and went to great lengths to get to win her over. After finally winning her over, she died shortly afterwards. The song was inspired by an experience of one of the band members. I was a very young man during that time period, and I can say with certainty that those weren't hair extensions. Long hair on men was to a large degree inspired by The Beatles in 1964. By 1967 during the hippy period many young men wore their hair well beneath their shoulders. It was especially common on rock musicians. This continued until the end of the 1970's when hair styles changed. Several had naturally very thick hair like Ian Gillan (the lead singer of Deep Purple) and Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin.

As far as I know, lyrics in Deep Purple can be good and entertaining BUT it's all about the music and the performance. Lyrics aren't as important as the music. The singer Ian Gillan has said that himself and that most important about the lyrics is how they sound and fit with the music, rhythm, syncopation etc. I personally has never cared much about the lyrics but I am always more interested in the music and how the play and interact with eachother.
