African Cichlids: 1 Hap You Must Have

Here's the missing #6 Hap from my prior video. A shout-out to KZreadr Michael Hayes for asking "why no love for the Taiwan Reef?" My slip, thank you Mike. Let's show Mike some love and visit his channel and sub him up!
Thanks to everyone, including IFG, for the honest feedback on the intro segment. I've shortened it. Please let me know what you think. One last shout-out to ALL OF YOU for getting my channel up and over 2,000 subs! It's never been about the subs for me but I'll admit that it feels good to surpass that milestone.
Please share any thoughts you have on this subject in the comments below. Be a part of "The Convo Gang" because on this channel, "We all learn from each other!"
If you're like me and like to always be learning about how to take better care of our fish, how about hitting that sub button and bell? Thanks!

Thank you Michael. I always wanted one but I had heard horror stories about how long it would take for them to color up.

I LOVE my TRC! Actually , I purchased one online and being new to Protomelas at the time, and coupled with the other 4 fish that I purchased I wasn’t even sure which one was the Taiwan.... Until one day he suddenly started coloring up drastically. Within a week he went from the common silver body with black vertical bars and the black horizontal as well to a blue face , yellowish side with only the vertical black bars remaining. Unbeknownst at the time the Red shoulder MALe that I bought turned out to be a she. He got her, and he then went back to silver.... luckily she swallowed the eggs and I ended up letting her go as I just can’t keep females. Waaay too much aggressive behavior among the males, as many of you know. He’s now fully colored up, royal blue, massive white streak from nose on up to the dorsal fin, solid body, no evidence of bars whatsoever. I guess I like him so much because he was finicky with his color for so long that I was proud when he finally committed. He’s about 4” . I have him in my grow out . He’s alpha. I moved my full size red empress into the grow out to let him recover from having a piece of gravel lodged in his cheek. Mr TRC got 1 look at that big “actually very mellow” empress and I watched his bars return INSTANTLY! He was smart enough to stay on the empress’s flank at all times. The way little fish follow sharks. The red empress healed 100%, I put him back in the 125 with my big fish and mr TRC was instantaneous back in control of the 55g grow out . Something about his intelligence that got my attention . People always expect me to prefer my big OB, or Turkis, or Red Empress, otter point or even the Yellow blaze . I just favor the TRC 🤷🏻‍♂️. So, when I saw a male, already starting to color at a LFS (a lighter turquoise blue one) I couldn’t resist. He kept his color but he absolutely submitted to the main , bigger one immediately and despite being a fast, rather lively little guy he sees that other TR and he doesn’t challenge. I could go on and on talking about my Africans .. I guess that’s why we do it , huh. Thank you for your hard work Mr Ochart. I know you are not a full time you tuber so I gotta give my respect for the time you put in to make this videos and you keep beautiful tanks . Keep it up.

One of the things I enjoy the most in this hobby is watching the fish blossom. One reason I post to YT is to go back sometimes and see how far a fish has come. Thanks for tuning in, much appreciated.

I’ve watched many many of my juveniles color up. Various haps and peacocks. NOTHING has given me more gratification than seeing my Taiwan Reef color up. He has grown at an average rate but it’s still been a long wait . Recently he was still silver and black until roughly 3 weeks ago. Overnight he started to change and within the past 3 weeks he looks amazing! He’s still coloring up more as I write this. Every day after work I go straight upstairs to see the 55 I put him in . I have a 125 with a lot of much bigger fish so I moved him to the 55 which I setup to house a few small cichlids. Well.. now its a grow out tank... Oh boy. I think I need another tank. , perhaps a 240-300g ?🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ this never ends, does it?!

Sorry to hear that EW. I have read that they can be a bit sensitive to even minor water issues that we wouldn't even consider out of range. Did you lose anybody else? But who knows. Sometimes they are older than we think and they just reach the end of their normal life span and us fish keepers go crazy trying to figure out what we did wrong.
