I found I have one grandfather on my dad's side who fought in the Colored Infantry 40th Regiment in the Civil War. Gives me goose bumps. Thank you allblack for this show. Brings tears to the eyes of those who suffered so we are here today.

I think this is so sad. I can only imagine what kind of character Mary Dumas had to fight against her husband's wishes. Tom Joyner reacted rightfully.

Who in their right mind would expect any a Black person or any person to get over the enslavement (which was usually brutal) to get over this history?

The male slave owner did NOT have a heart. Just bc he willed them to become free doesn't excuse the years he beat, raped, punished, tortured, and abused these people. They were NOT SLAVES but they were ENSLAVED. The wife did not want to free them bc the two believed in enslavement. They enjoyed the benefits of not having to work, allowing themselves to make 100s of millions off of free labor, and they didn't see Africans as people but property. They were ALL RACIST and enjoyed the inhumane treatment. When u are facing death, u tend to fear the afterlife, and his request wasn't bc he felt bad it was bc he feared what his destiny would become after a lifetime of enslaving human beings. If he wanted them free, he would have done it himself b4 he died. This is the mind games they played with the enslaved, a way to give them a little hope, to remain loyal, to obey, and not rebel. It's something that happened over and over again. It's sad but a real reality that still happens to date. The wife is worse than the husband bc historically white women have held even more hatred in their hearts than their men which is mind blowing. She's his partner and their beliefs were the same bc she willed the enslaved to her family. It's sickening. They had no intentions of freeing them just as they have no intentions of granting us true freedom to date.

Did you ever find your family tree? I have a subscription with ancestry.com and made trees for friends who loved what I found for them. Knowing who you are and those who came before us is interesting.

Since the original owner is dead then doesn't the wife now own them and since the wife now owns them why can't she free them if she see's fit and so on no matter who they went on to be passed on to, whomever inherits them are therefore the owners and can free them!! And the reason we cannot just move on and put it behind us is because we too would like to search our genealogy but when you watch shows like "Who do you think you are" and see white celebrities bloodline go as far back the 17th century and in some cases back further than that and find they're related to royalty as we can only go back to when our enslaved ancestors were freed and started to be found under their slave masters last names....NOTHING before that, you can't tell me that wouldn't be painful to white people as well, that is why we can't just move on and forget about it, we want to know who our relatives are just like they want to know.
