Africa Twin Offroad Racing 2017 Desert 100

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

April 2nd, 2017 I raced in the 47th annual Stumpjumpers Desert 100 in central Washington. 1200 racers, Le Mans style start signalled by a cannon.
This was my 5th year racing the ADV class (652cc and up). The class is mostly made up of KTM 950SE and 950/990ADV with some 690, 701, F800gs, HP2E etc mixed in. I raced my modded F800gs in 2013-2015, 1190R in 2016 and this year on an Africa Twin.
The course was extremely wet this year with dozens of huge sink holes, bogs and soft sections just waiting to swallow your front tire or whole bike.
I placed ok despite having several issues. I battled back and forth with Adrian (my good friend and fellow GS Trophy team member) for the entire race. We swapping positions 9 times and when the dust settled (literally), he was just seconds ahead of me.
As always, I had a blast at the race and can't wait to go back next year.
Bike set up:
-SW Motech skid plate
-Hepco Becker crash bars (with extra gussets and bracing)
-Camel ADV high fender conversion
-Seat Concepts Rally High
-Renthal RC High bars
-Emperor Racing handguards
-Dunlop AT81 front tire
-Terraflex rear tire
-Konflict Motorsports tuned suspension (stock parts resprung/revalved)
-Leo Vince exhaust

Try contour cameras instead. Much better mounting system and turn able so you can mount at any angle and rotate the inerds so the picture is level. Great riding and fun video! I can't believe you guys are out there banging around with all the pure dirt bikes! I've heard nothing but good about this new honda.

I had a first generation Contour, it had some fatal flaws. I understand they have upped their game though so I may check it when this cam needs replacing.

Wow! 1000cc or not, all I see is an Africa Twin hanging with the dirt bikes and made it to the finish line and wasn't the last in place. That says a lot to me about this bike and an excellent rider no doubt.

Great to see a bike like yours have a go at a race like that. Did you ever bend or brake the clutch rod that connects the clutch pedal to the engine? When I saw the bike for the first time that seemed like such a weak spot for adventure riding. Awesome race, would like to have a go at something like that one day.

  • @CamelADV

    @CamelADV

    7 жыл бұрын

I haven't bend that rod. To be honest, I'm OK with having a "fuse" between the shift and vital tranny parts. Jam the shifter into a rock or stump and you'll bend the rod, hopefully saving the transmission internals from damage. I had to limp out a few times on my old F800gs after cranking the shifter on something. On that bike, push up too hard and you can bend the plate at the end of the shift shaft which keeps the bike from shifting out of 1st. The skinny AT rod hasn't been an issue for me yet. Time will tell.

Fun video, looked like the course was well suited for the AT, except the bogs of course! Stock suspension? If not, what mods?

Insane! Great video, great music! Was the bike full-stock or did you mod some parts? Makes me wanna get my ATAS and try just like you did

Lots of changes to this bike. You could get away with an aftermarket skid plate and suspension revalve and respring.

If there's a positive, it's that they don't seem to break, just bend very easily.

The camera got bumped after installing it but before the race started. I didn't notice it was pointed down as much as it was.
