Africa Express Presents: Terry Riley's In C Mali

Музыка

for me, i have always preferred Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" to 'In C'. this version, however, has leveled the playing field. what a fantastic rendition.

It's amazing how different In C can sound with different instrumentation. This is utterly gorgeous.

I am astonished at how good this is. True to Riley's original source material, yet a completely fresh and original concept. A triumph.

Wow. What an amazing take on Riley's vision. It sticks to the original spirit and yet sounds completely renewed. I'm speechless.

the best thing about "In C" is that it says nothing whatsoever about what instruments should be used, how many musicians there should be in the group, or how many times each section should be repeated; the only requirements are that one part keeps time for all the others, and that everyone should try and keep up with each other, not going too far ahead or lagging too far behind and as far as interpretations go, this one is fantastic!

Interesting comment, and it seems Steve Reich was the one who suggested the idea of time to Terry Riley, who initially had thought of a predetermined tempo/bpm. This way, the performance always seems more organic and fluid, less rigid I guess. See Wikipedia: "As detailed in some editions of the score, it is customary for one musician ("traditionally... a beautiful girl," Riley notes in the score) to play the note C in repeated eighth notes, typically on a piano or pitched-percussion instrument (e.g. marimba). This functions as a metronome and is referred to as "The Pulse". Steve Reich introduced the idea of a rhythmic pulse to Riley, who accepted it, thus radically altering the original composition by Riley which had no pre-determined rhythm."

First heard "In C" back in 1970 or 71 on the Columbia recording and was blow away. It was my, and the world's, introduction to minimalism in music. This recording brings back that wonder and excitement.

There's a big amount of shots on the video and that's the key to it's engagement, but due to the lenght of the music it would've been great to have, let's say 3 times more shots from Mali and the recording, since it turns very monotonus after few minutes. In any case the motion picture goes along great with the music. Good job.

There is no score, that's the thing with In C. It's just a set of intructions. Yes, they do add a few things (such as vocals). But what's striking is how this is immediately identifiable as In C even if filtered through an African prism.
