90s was the peak of AFL standards, most players could use both sides and there was little milking decisions. 2000s they stopped focusing on skill and instead referenced endurance when recruiting

AFL fans pretending just because it isn’t as rough as it was 40 years ago, it has become a soft sport lol. There is something called players health. Aussie Rules is still one of the roughest sports out there with (more) severe injuries almost every game. But I do agree with the portrayal of the 50 penalty, that has become an utter joke.

💯 Highs and concussions ruined a lot of players lives, look at all the old guys walking around with CTE. And refs deserve respect - they make mistakes but they're a human element in the game like players

@@Secretlyanothername perfectly put. I am sometimes baffled by refs, but in the next game, they put on a perfect performance. They deserve more credit when they put on a good performance. Players must be protected, many former AFL players struggle severely. The game doesn’t have to be utter warfare to be enjoyable.

It was an eye for an eye, natural justice but also tactical. Bit like hockey, you had one or two big guys on each team to keep an eye on the smaller guys not getting hit. You also used to get quite a few snipers who made some cowardly cheap shots. It was all part of it but it ruined some blokes for life too. Players also used to verbally abuse umpires too on occasion. Different time.
