/afk - Away From Keyboard 2016 RE-RELEASE - World of Warcraft Gaming Documentary

Ойындар

/afk - AWAY FROM KEYBOARD follows 5 gamers for 6 years. The movie walk you through the life as a gamer and how it may or may not effect the lives of the the gamer or the people around. /afk explores the relationship between online gamers and the games that they play. It examines the evolution of the World of Warcraft from its infancy to its non-existent conclusion and beyond, into the world of obsession. Through the lives of several key characters, it shows the joys associated with online games, and offers a objective look at some of its inherent trappings.
/afk - AWAY FROM KEYBOARD seeks to create a dialog about gamers in an attempt to bring understanding to the online gaming phenomenon and the 12 million gamers behind the World of Warcraft; the most successful MMO of all time. In doing so, one might assert that gaming can no sooner be understood than that of any other form of addiction: if it's an addiction at all.

Met my spouse on WoW. It was a complete accident. That was 16 years ago. I know so many people lost so many things to that game, but for me, it gave me the beautiful life I have now. My nice home, my loving husband, my children, the world I inhabit on a daily basis....I could not be more grateful to Blizzard and WoW for the things I have now. We were addicted to the game until we were together, then we just stopped playing without even really realizing it was happening. I'm sure there are other people like me out there. I was surrounded by people, but lonely. Now, I don't even miss that game. But God, I am so glad it was there. I never would have found my husband, whom I still love dearly, otherwise. Just an alternate viewpoint.

I played Vanilla when I was a teenager stopped back in 2005. 15 years later I hop on Classic. This time as an adult with a job, wife, home and healthy community. Thanks for capturing and sharing these stories. It creates a great soundboard for self reflection- for me to ensure I have a healthy fulfilling life. You did a great bipartisan job of reporting... I am curious what was your relationship with the game like? Were you only an observer? What was it like to watch your friends and family navigate their relationship with the game?

  • @GalaxyPlaceTV

    @GalaxyPlaceTV

    3 жыл бұрын

Thank you for the kind words. We put a lot of energy into providing all sides of the conversation, despite our own convictions. Being conscious of bias is the only way to make efforts to remove it. I began playing WoW with my brothers, but found that I didn't have a lot of time to play while I was working on the film. Later, as I was editing and putting the film together, I found more time to indulge and my role as an observer expanded. Seeing it from a distance, I felt like I was able to compartmentalize their experience to ensure that my relationship with the game was a healthy one. But, that being said, there were still times when I overindulged. As Scott put it so eloquently in the film, "balance is the key." I tend to be the kind of person that can become obsessed so this entire experience has been really illuminating for me personally. Watching my brothers and friends play the game and having this film experience to share with them for the rest of our lives is something really special. Thanks for your inquiry... I appreciate the questions and the headspace that they put me into... a trip down memory lane. All my best, Greg

Especially because it shows so many different people in different situations, not just the super addicts. Gaming / WoW is always labeled as the one game that all failures get stuck on, but much more it shows you in the way you play where your deficits / demands are & how today's society affects you, that somone has to escape into a game.. I was able to reflect a lot, i brought wisdom out of here. Thanks. (Hope you all quit playing lol, but if not, i would love to play with u Guys some moderate playtime.)

Thank you for your kind words. We love to hear from our fans and truly appreciate the time you have given us for your thoughtful response. There are so many lessons to learn from all of our experiences with gaming. This film has taught me and my friends and brothers that the power of connection is the most true element that we seek to satisfy. As we speak, I am about to step into the VR world for an opportunity to connect with those that I love. It seems too cool to not give it a shot. Have you tried it out? I can’t speak for everyone, but my brothers and I haven’t been playing much as we used to; marriage, kids, life. We did give New World a try but had to ply on a different server from my brothers and that lack of connection killed it for me. Plus, it got boring! For now, I look forward to exploring the VR world. Thanks again for reaching out and spreading our message. Happy New Year! Greg

I was in my mid 20's as well when WoW was unleashed upon the world. There's been good times and bad, but ultimately I know I should've spent much less time on it. I try not to think in terms of wishing I'd done things differently, though. Doing so never leads anywhere but down in my experience. Anyways, I hope you all have found a way to play with moderation. Thought I would've seen every documentary talking about World of Warcraft and the journey some people spent in it, I guess I was wrong ! You've made a good job by following different members of a crew throughtout the years and seeing how the game is discussed and how it shaped their lives, this is some kind of things we don't see every day, especially in this domain where everything change so quickly ! The differents aspects and themes exposed like family, loneliness, depression but also fun and community and the ultimate question : is it worth it ? It makes us step back and think about our journey and passion. And that's great ! Thanks for your work, had a great time watching this ! Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate the thought you put into your post. Are you a gamer yourself... or were you at one time? The process of making this film taught me more about the human condition than it did about the World of Warcraft. It's fascinating to think that players of MMOs are quickly blending into a collective pool of gamers that are seeing much more tolerance in the last five years. There is less judgement and more understanding... and that seems to have been the outcome of our film. Footage... I hear you on that. We started with a MiniDV format camera back in 2004 and unfortunately, there is little that can be done. We had to use some effects on the footage to bring out the light and dissipate those blacks. We've exhausted our resources professionally in that regard. Thanks again for your comments. For the Horde! -Greg aka Optimator

This is one of the only true representations of online gaming. MMOs have good and bad sides like everything else in the world. if you want to play games all day, that's your decision. the world is a nightmare anyways, so why not escape it as much as possible. I played MMOs for almost 20 years before finally getting bored and giving up. Nowadays social media has vastly more negative effects on people and 90% of the population uses it all day every day. Unfortunately, the world is run through social media now, so regardless of how negatively it impacts people, nothing will ever be done about it. I quit social media totally in 2019 and I can honestly say my life is much better. The amount of stress social media brings to your life is massive, yet there is no way to understand the source of the problem while it's happening. Social media is the most addictive thing on the planet and that is totally by design. The sheer amount of social, political and financial manipulation is mind blowing.

Thanks for your comment... sorry for my delay in responding. The concept came about after I finished up at the University of Arizona. My degree was in Media Arts, so I wanted to do a film... well, I wanted to do a short, film really. So, as big fans of the Warcraft RTS and a fan of Everquest... my brothers and I were excited about WoW. I had an idea that this game would be big. But, never did I think that my idea for a short would evolve into such a long project. In the end, the evolution of the concept is palpable throughout the film; from the evolution of our players, to the quality of our footage and beyond. At some point, I knew I had something so I moved to LA and got introduced to Alex who was instrumental in finishing the film. Together, we continued to film for another three more years. In the end, what we have today is truly something unique and I am really proud of how it all turned out. I think the movie serves as a window into the early days of WoW and really captures the magic that can happen in the world of gaming. But, the most amazing part of this film is engaging with our fans... so thank you for reaching out and sharing your thoughts. Again, I apologize for the delay... been working on our newest endeavor, our educational channel. -Greg

I am playing it myself, with a friend who used to play the game back in the day before I got to know them, but I am super casual about it. I've never managed to actually experience Vanilla WoW so it's all new to me! Back when it was released I was still a poor student so I couldn't afford it, my parents also didn't want to pay monthly for a game, they didn't understand, and we also had terrible internet. I was pretty sad I couldn't play it cause it seemed so cool. Years later, I played it here and there, but since none of my friends did, I never got far because I chose to play the MMORPGs they could play, or rather; afford. So mostly free ones, haha. My main MMORPG is actually FFXIV for about 2 years now, but I really love the genre in general so I was thrilled at the chance to experience WoW the way it was in its good old days. And yeah, I can see why that seems daunting, is pretty grindy, but I actually like grindy games as well, it's nice to have the change of pace from FFXIV where everything feels on fast forward, and be able to just grind for a while in WoW to mix it up, there is something relaxing about grinding. But it's also a lot more time consuming, next to there being no party finders, no teleports, having to walk everywhere, having go to a dungeon physically to enter it, etc. But it makes it feel more immersive and social though, and stuff also feels more rewarding, which I like.

@@chocobro3198 Yeah, I see what you're saying. I've been playing Destiny 2 here and there... easier to maintain a console for me... and have been grinding out a few things that are taking a while. I don't get a chance to play a lot, but I don't mind whittling away at a few things. Especially, since it's so hard to find time to raid... been wanting to for some time. Well, enjoy Vanilla WoW. I played a Discipline/Shadow Priest back in the day and boast wiping my entire MC raid the very first time I went with them. I aggroed an ancient core hound... haha. Yo so what I'm confused about is why do they call it "The Game" during the whole entire doc? It makes me think that they were only supposed to say "The Game" for some reason rather than "WoW' or "World' or w/e. I know that 3 years into wow everyone was calling it "wow" and I just don't understand calling it "the game" 3-4 years into playing it. it just doesn't seem right for some reason. i feel like during the editing they could only use the term "the game" so every shot that they said something else was cut out or something?

It kept the moniker as we progressed even though we had written permission to use the name, if need be. Thanks for checking us out! Lok’tar Ogar

If society/ppl weren't weird (and sadistic) to begin with, they wouldn't try to make others feel like they're weird. Ironically, a huge percentage of gamers turned into that sort of society in so many ways. Let's judge without knowing, let's condemn this and that in a heartbeat, let's hate and mock (I do remember this type of ppl and they definitely were not a majority in any games I used to love, and ive always been unlucky with meeting truly normal ppl, especially back then). And I've been arguing the self inflicted prophecy is strong in this one, as many of us forgot that the point of games is to have fun. Anyone who's been online can understand what I mean. There are different ways to enjoy a game but this division did not exist then. The games have always been time sinks, especially such huge and dangling-carrot natured games. My own father demonized WoW from the start (to avoid thinking about our own underlying issues and his own responsibility in that story). Society demonized gaming until it became mainstream (and then it just finds something else to judge by and bully, music wise, appearance wise.. any choice they've learnt to see as responsible for everything supposedly or truly bad). Parts of society are actually returning to that state or never moved on, all while whining about it on Facebook and not just in their churches or wherever they find their echo chambers. Nowadays, gamers think they know what's wrong but they don't listen to themselves and have ended up villain wannabes who try to trigger others 24/7 and want the world to end just because they can't find their balance, and are suicidal or something (obviously, i don't know everyone, and each person has to filter what they feel and are, but do it honestly and not conveniently and trendily, like it's been happening - and no, the internet isn't to blame for our own choices and addictions and mentalities and behaviors). So... It shouldn't be blamed only on Blizzard and the other companies, shareholders, etc, just because it's easy and convenient to blame only them, as well as the politicians (all of them). But good luck explaining this whole thing to ppl who are frothing and have become cynical and lunatic conspiracy theorists, or elitists of any kind - I still hope I'm giving the former too much credit and that they're not a definite majority (so far) but I ain't closing my eyes to the fact they probably are and are still (allowed to be) exploiting anything online and every confused person in a weak spot, and that the elitism and lost hope are way worse than before, for obvious or deeper reasons that I won't be analyzing here or I'd finish this comment in a week and my head may explode by the second day. Well, I am angry due to so many things lately but if there was one thing that drove me mad back in my depressed days it could easily be this judgemental side of society that only(?) got worse and tainted this community on top of every other one... It's so ironic to see ppl say they oppose that same side of society when they act just like that in order to feel better about themselves and to find/invent an enemy, and a way to act as if they're superior ...and in any shape or form capable of deciding if you're normal or crazy, lolz... If everyone took care of themselves in that department.... Anyway, there are objectively wrong situations and behaviors, habits, choices and so on. The guy saying the gaming addiction was a symptom is close to what i think, obviously. Only, the symptoms' layers are many and if you're afraid to notice them for real then you shouldn't talk about others and their unhealthy decisions. As if this society itself has eliminated and does not love the problematic delusions and all the "audiences" and doesn't thrive on them, and it all. The only way to escape this cage is to find a true balance you can enjoy without accepting the trendy way to live a life, play a game etc, and only focus on what you truly find worthy and soothing, and be normal unlike the rest ppl who try to bring others down while avoiding responsibility themselves in those supposedly little everyday things... Lol, the ones towards the end, saying that there's no balance.... Well, they don't get that others may be able to reach a balance. Btw, i used to cling to playing sports (soccer mainly) but life&humans didn't want me to pursue that so i ended up focusing way more on gaming (and listening to music), but still not obsessively, compared to the majority of gamers at least; i simply usually preferred it to staring at the ceiling forever or interacting with selfish individuals who drained my hope regarding our species. Filthy casuals and amateurs may be the only ones who are normal after all? :p Aaand others are probably jealous, of the weird balance they cannot reach, hence the hate... p.s. was typing this while watching the video so I may have missed something and maybe i misunderstood the guys saying there's no balance. And I "failed" to mention the guy who was talking about murdering others every time he appeared on screen xD again, everyone should sort their own issues calmly and logically, and hope they find others who can assist them with that and everything... Hf! And if I'm not making sense in some parts, i cba to check again so I will do so later when/if I'm (rightfully?) bashed and mocked for it (some will say i don't make sense at all but i can surely face those too, so I'll be here for them too!). Oh and I'm not an expert but I know I could've been good at PvP if i invested more time in the game; but i both lacked a high-end pc (and at times, an internet connection) and didn't find the gearing process worthy, so i ended up staring at ceilings a bit, and it wasn't sooo bad. As I usually say: we need breaks from literally everything. And we should be able to take them. Why are things set up in a way we can't really take breaks from hardships -and vicious cycles and self inflicted prophecies-, that's something to think hard about when staring at walls, assuming you can endure/enjoy that part, or any part... but never try to make your issues a responsibility of the whole world (of Warcraft) unless you really want to be that guy, and part of the problem (situations differ but this generalized statement is about the majority, and anyone facing themselves needs to do so with balance in the first place so if you feel you can't achieve it you should require pro help, till you can). I'm not sure why I kept adding stuff but, no way I'm deleting them now. Again, hf, everyone.

Erik and Ross are both doing their own things... Ross is working to pursue his art, @ross_stuetze on Insty... Erik spends a lot of his time reading and hanging with the crew. Magic: The Gathering has been the one thing that we all get together and play from time to time... it's the game that still binds us all...

This doc is fairly one sided it doesn't really open you to how much creativity and community spring from games. Yes some people go to far, people go to far with pizza and shopping too. Why is addiction not understood as a natural function of pleasure.

I agree with you on the creativity aspect, and Ross really dives into that regarding his artwork. Being entertained and getting inspired can be one and the same and they can be happening at the same time. I think the danger is when we only seek pleasure... because there are times in all of our lives that we need to be uncomfortable, where we need to do something that makes us uneasy. It's easy to always want to do things that bring us pleasure, but there are some great reward outside of that realm as well. Thanks for the thoughtful feedback... here's hoping you have a great holiday season. -Greg

This isn't a documentary about world of warcraft it is about addiction. Every person in this documentary obviously has an addictive personality, and that addiction could have fallen to anything drugs, alcohol, sex. I also don't see any examples of the millions of people who manage the game well, have successful lives, and have been influenced in a positive way from warcraft. Incredibly one sided from beginning to end.

  • @GalaxyPlaceTV

Absolutely agree... I think that everyone has the potential to be addicted to something. And I think you may have missed the entire premise of our film. World of Warcraft HAS done many great things for many people. I think you may have skipped over all of the people we interviewed who DO balance the game and real life. In fact, most of the people we interviewed from BlizzCon and SDCC were in perfect harmony in their lives. Some of the five gamers we followed in the film would say the same. Craig, exhibited a clear understanding of his limits and was very honest about his experience. Erik, clearly didn't give a shit and was very open about the freedom he felt from playing WoW. In the end, we believe that it all comes down to the individual. Balance IS the key... but it takes someone to understand what balance means to them. So, I hope you see that we recognize that Warcraft is not at fault here. And, that gaming as a whole has done and continues to do many good things out there. Thanks for checking us out. -Greg

I did watch this video from beginning to end. I would really be interested in the time quotes specifically in the movie where a counter point is presented. Even when one of the players seemed to be getting to a positive thought they could extract from the game it was immediately followed by many multiples of negativity brought about in there lives. You never even examine whether the game has any merits, whether the players you are interviewing have achieved anything they are proud of in game, if there have been any friendships created from the game world. These questions never even get brought up once. Even in Eriks case I feel like you only took him tubing to show the fact that his reasons for playing the game, being his difficulty getting outside, were totally invalid. Giving the woman who had her son commit suicide such a forum to spread her agenda I felt was one of the most one sided elements of the film, as we are given no other details on her life or her sons life besides the two facts, one he shot himself and two he played video games. It seems to this woman she has totally written off the idea that her son could have just been sick, or his suicide might have just been inevitable due to his mindset, she is 100% convinced that the video game caused his suicide. Aside from being impossible to prove I feel like she has used video games as the villain to deal with the tragedy of loss, but in doing so she has created the narrative "this happened to my son it could happen to yours if you let him game" and that is an absolutely ridiculous idea to be pushing. I feel like I am a fairly neutral party being someone who doesn't actually play games anymore, I was actually here just for a nostalgia kick. I never felt at any time in the film if I had to wonder about how the filmmaker felt about the topic presented. I never saw a person that was directly refuting the concept that video games must be addictive, or that even addicts can still manage and have successful lives. They might at some times move towards something you could infer as positive, but that feeling is never allowed to develop nor is it given anyone to argue on its behalf. Nobody is in here telling these people to stop using the game as an excuse for their failures in life, you just continue to hammer home the point of how addictive the game is and how bad addiction can be. There are millions of other people failing at the same exact things these humans are failing at who have never even heard of world of warcraft or played any video games at all.

Exactly. This "documentary" is horrible. These guys are being made to feel bad because they like to do something they love. What if they were spending the same amount of time watching sports? Or keeping up a yard? Or any of the many things people do to escape. Hey guys, do things with your life but understand your escape choice is just that, there is nothing wrong with games. Last, let me say, I am so sorry for the young man who took his life, but to blame a game, I don't think so. Suicide is not that simple, and to blame video games just takes the focus off of whatever was going on in his life. I hear a lot of things that these guys "want" that seemed based on what others think they should do and maybe not what they want? Change the video game to football or sports and you will have the same results. The judgement of games by people who have never played and don't have a clue about what games are is also ridiculous. You ask the wrong questions. This is just bad, bad science, bad editing, and I feel bad for the guys who are obviously being made to feel bad about themselves.

Watching TV is the biggest addiction humanity has. But hey, nobody complaining about watching TV for hours every day, because big money is involved in ads etc. It's not the problem of what you are addicted to (in most case), but the addiction itself. Balance = key.

1st thing lady: There's a problem when men try to escape like that and guess who it's not, it's not your husband who's the problem! 2nd thing: It's not the game. Men either try to escape there when they have overbearing wives who try to change them rather than accept them for who they are, and there's an addictive personality. These people with Addictive Personality, they can get addicted to anything, eating chalk, drinking too much, hard drugs, etc.
