YOU have got to try this awesome camera
So GOOD you will want one
I've seen this camera described as the greatest film SLR ever made, well I'm no expert so I can't debate that statement. What I can say without doubt this is one of the very best film cameras I've ever owned and used. I bought the Minolta Dynax 9 in 1998, I shot it at sports in all weathers until late 2003 when I finally went digital with the awesome but sadly departed Nikon 1DH. The 9 is still going strong, paired with a 50mm 1.7 Minolta lens this beast is formidable. If you're in the market for a solid film SLR you could do worse that grab a Minolta Dynax 9 aka the Minolta Maxxum 9 aka the Alpha 9. aka the Minolta 9, whatever they named it I'll name it in my all time top cameras.
Black and white images shot on the Minolta Dynax 9 using Rollei RPX 100 35mm film. Developed in Kodak D76.
Colour images shot for my editor at Hawke's Bay Today newspaper using a Canon 1DX.

I remember lusting after one of these when they were new, even more than the Nikon F5.

I used my Alpha 9 just yesterday on a photo walk. Paired with the 100mm macro lens. The Alpha 9 is a fantastic camera though heavy. I do think it was the, or one of the pinnacles of film cameras. Also one of the best ergonomic cameras I know of. Fits my hand perfectly. Highly recommended.

It is a pretty decent Pro level camera, but the problem with this camera and a lot of other Minoltas at the time was that they were always palying catch up to Nikon and even Canon. The Dynax 9 has pretty much exactly the same specs as a Nikon F5, but it was introduced two years later than the F5. Eventually Sony bought out Minolta in 2006 and started to make cameras.

@@paultaylorphotography9499 I had an early Sony camera, theye are not for me. Tech wise they are very advanced, but that is about it. They feel extremley sterile. I feel the same about Fujis. Had a couple of them, didn't work for me. I have been a photographer for nearly 50 years now, and it has always been Nikon and Leica for for me. I was surprised that I liked my canon 5D as much as i did, and I still have my MKII, but still it is Nikon and leica for me in the 135 or FX format.

The instax is ok, I got my daughter one a while back, and it’s not bad for an instant, but the film is expensive, well I say expensive, it’s probably the cheapest instant film you can buy, but I don’t like being able to work out how many pounds a shot a photo costs.

Agreed mate Minolta were the poor cousins of Nikon and Canon but with their flagship they were well up there with the big guns. I read one of the reasons the pros back in the day bagged the 9 was because it had a pop up flash haha to be honest I never use it but if I’m ever in need I know it’s there. Thanks for taking a look enjoy that Minolta mate

The greatest is the F5 Nikon and they improved it a bit in the F6. Nikon was untouchable in the film era.

I always keep an eye out for an F5 and 6 one day I’ll have them oh and the f3 I’d give my left spud for one. Thanks for checking the vid mate appreciate it

Untouchable until Canon brought out the Canon EOS 1 and then EOS 1N and then EOS 1V which all had more reliable and faster autofocus. Ask any professional sports or agency photographer from the time. The Nikon F4 couldn’t keep up, the F5 was too heavy and the F6 was for rich hobbyists. Nikon didn’t get their act together until they launched the D3.

Film is all the RAGE right now on KZread. My first x3 cameras were film but I just don't get it these days e.g. you have to be super rich and for what exactly? The quality of images is crap in my humble opinion... while knowing wholeheartedly that beauty is in the eye of the beholder but im starting to wonder about the kings clothes theory??... just saying PS love your content mate just playing devils advocate while being bombarded with film vids on KZread 😅

haha fair play mate, agreed masses of film content on YT right now, I reckon a lot of it is folk who grew up on digital and fancy trying retro there's no doubt film is making a resurgence and agreed the quality is poor compared to today's digital files, medium format and larger is pretty good though. For me it's just about trying old gear seeing what I can do with it, I still enjoy the process of shooting film, but there's no way I'd shoot anything other than digitally when it actually matters, digital is king for paid work. I used to shoot weddings in pre digital times and the days of agonising for the film to be developed was awful, shitein house bricks hoping I didn't make a balls of it, haha, these days you can constantly check you have a shot. Cheers for watching and giving your thoughts always welcome mate.
