    I'm a late opinel fan, recently bought a NO. 8 and 2 NO. 7 carbon steel. Now my holy trinity of budget knife (Morakniv, Victorinox and now Opinel) is complete. As a left hand person myself I agree: Opinel ergonomics are quite comfortable. Happy to see a new channel like yours!

    I just discovered your channel, I am so happy that you made a video on Opinel! In France, it is the main camping knife, the one that your grandpa gives you first time you go camping. But first of all, as it is a French knife, it is particularly suited for cooking and eating! Be assured that it is the perfect knife to cut bread and saucisson (dry sausage)!!! Cheers!

    Certainement ca. J'aime les opinels, ils ce sont magnifique. I hope that is correct, it has been 15 years since my last lesson in French haha. Certainly true what you write about the cooking part - mine are also mainly for food prep :) Thanks for passing by!

    I'm 65 and remember seeing my first one when I was 6-7. The owner was quite proud of it. I thought that vfc the locking mechanism was strange, but it has survived.

    Thanks for the comment - I actually have one of these in my collection, and the locking mechanism indeed is somewhat strange. If I remember correctly the more recent ring with the sloped lock was added somewhen in the late 70s. Works better, but does not have the charm. :)

    In response to Part 1, I complimented you on being a champion for the good ol’ Suisse Army Knife. I have the Huntsman. Here, you’re touting another of my carry knives. The one difference in how you and I use the Opinel is I employ wedges instead of prying with mine. The blade is not very strong when you use it like a pry bar. Good choice of knife, though.

  • @RathwulvenBushcraft

    @RathwulvenBushcraft

    Yeah wedges are of course the better idea, yet I just wanted to show the knife’s performance as such. Hence the use and abuse ;-). Thanks for the view and for commenting!

    I've recently discovered Opinel and have become a believer! I have in carbon a no 10 and then stainless a no 10 (with corkscrew and bottle opener) a no 8 with spoon and fork attachments, a regular no 8 and then a no 5 that I carry all the time just to cut packages open, cut loose strings on clothes and things like that. I'm looking forward to getting the carbon 10, stainless 8 and the 8 with spoon and fork out into the field as soon as the weather turns nicer and I can go camping. Can't wait to try to light a fire with them! Thank you for the video. Cheers!

    My friend had one but the locking ring had rusted or gotten crimped so it would not rotate anymore. The birch wood swells when it gets wet and the blade becomes difficult to get out. So I never invested in one and stick with my Victorinox Swiss Army Camper and Imperial Sodbuster knives that I use for daily utility on the homestead. I've read on a forum that the olive wood handles don't have that issue that the birch handles have.

    I have a leather thong through the Opinel and wear it as an edc sanded the handle, burnt it in flames and sealed it. Put a little finger notch in the handle next to the collar. Then polished the ss blade to mirror shine. So sharp and versatile. 👍🏻

    Saw a comment you made on Woodland Tacticl. So came for a look. I too like the opinels. My day trip cutting kit is a no. 12 modified into a more traditional bushcraft drop point blade, a forward finger choil on the handle and the top of the back of the handle rounded off. I carry this in a kit with a No. 12 Opinel folding saw. I also carry a No.9 for food preparation. (I have fairly large hands). This is a very light weight kit and for day hikes or even longer i find it does everything i ask of it. I would recomend these very versatile and easily modified knives to anyone. Good health and stay safe. PS. (Yes, i subscribed. ;-)

    Although openal knives are great knifes for their price most are illegal to carry in the UK due to the locking blade I think that the largest one that can be carried is the no 2 because it doesn't have a locking blade back before the UK government Changed the knife one of the knifes I used to carry was the openal no 5 which if memory serves me correctly is the most popular model

    People who call Opinels junk, have no clue about knives. Zero knowledge, not just little. I suggest the No9 Carbon, to those who want the best offering. I've modified one, to a drop point, I've burned the handle making it completely black, and then I sticked the blade in a lemon. After some hours, and a bit of reprofiling, to a full convex from spine to the very edge, I had the most beautiful, and sliciest knife I ever had!! PS I own 500$ knives, but none came with perfect, heat treatment, perfect grinds, and perfect and even bevels like the Opinels ALWAYS do, like if they make them out of a photo copy machine!!!
