In 1993, Zambia lost the majority of their national team in a tragic plane crash. 19 years on, they reached the African Cup Of Nations final, and the game would be played in Gabon, only miles from the crash site. It was the perfect chance to honour the memory of their fallen heroes, but against the heavily fancied Ivory Coast, they had a big task on their hands.

This was emotional it brought so much joy coz we did it when everyone thought we could not do it
I saw the game in the states. It was a David & Goliath match up. On paper, Zambia had no business carrying their jock straps let alone being in the same field with The Ivory Coast. Everyone thought that The Ivory Coast was going to blow them away, but Zambia had other plans.

Because Gervinho missed his penalty in the 2012 Final, he was subbed off right before the penalty shootout in the 2015 AFCON Final
