"'Should I?' is a song about doubt. Way back in 2020, right after we put out Redneck Vikings From Hell, AETHER REALM experienced a surge of new fans. However, this was coupled with an increase in the number of "anti-fans" - people that aren't content to simply not enjoy our music, but feel a strong need to convince other people not to as well. You might call them "trolls" or "haters" or whatever. You know the type. We were also navigating the music industry for the first time - the world of labels and contracts and generally feeling like a small fish in a big pond.
I hadn't really figured out how to deal with this transition. Some of it was getting under my skin, and I found myself doubting my choices and abilities. At the same time, the skeleton for a new track was coming together. I had been listening to a lot of Soilwork, and I think that showed in the songwriting. I definitely wrote the vocals with Soilwork's vocalist Björn Strid in mind but in a vague 'wouldn't it be cool if' way. The lyrics spilled out naturally, taking the shape of the question I ask myself every time someone tells me I should be doing something different than what I'm doing. Heinrich and Donny laid down guitars for a working demo, and we picked it back up in 2023 and started polishing it up. Our boys in Wilderun had just done a tour with Soilwork, and a connection was made. I shot my shot with Björn, and a short time later he responded that he dug the track and would do it.
Tyler and I tracked drums, vocals, and bass with Kile Odell at Top Track Studios and No Heroes Studios respectively. I think it came out pretty great, but I'm sure I'll hear someone tell me that I should write a different way. I think from now on I'll probably get some catharsis out of just responding with 'Should I?'"

This resonates with me. I got into my career to write good stuff that I believe in, but that’s only a small part of the job. Most of it is to generate forgettable, meaningless Content that pays the bills but I often feels compromises on my values. Yes, it’s how I survive under capitalism and all, but damn if it doesn’t feel rotten at times regardless.

Big grin. First listening. Guy frowning while walking. "What the ... why is so soft? It sounds ... overconstructed ... and ... poppy." Second listening while standing in the bakery. Confused face. "Okay, this IS different, YET it is AR to the bone. What is happening?!" Third listening. Guy walking back, paper bag in his hand: GOOSEBUMPS: CHECK INVOLUNTARY FIST PUMPING IN PUBLIC: CHECK SKANKFACE: CHECK HAPPYNESS LEVEL: 666 Two random thoughts: Normally I do not relate much to lyrics. How they are delivered, yes very much, but WHAT is actually sung? Not so much, sorry, though AR tracks are often the exception (TSTMTS especially). But this song ist different. The topic ist highly relevant and I like the roads you both go down regarding that. And holy fucknuts, the line "You can break yourself, but they will not cry for you" is a ten ton hammer. And what the fuck is up with Tylers drum sound? It is so fucking THICC. Beautiful! All in all wonderful song.

I really don't like the direction you're heading and actually am extremely saddend. I'm a huge fan of your early works, got all Albums (including RVfH) and a ton of merch. OCbtG and Tarot were increadible albums I still listen to nearly daily since 2017, but now I miss the folk tune and the epicness in your newer music. Singing about your fans, your music and who one is is fine and all, but it gets boring real fast. Your earlier works had personality. It took me on a journey and that feeling is now sadly lacking. The songs feel generic, empty and without much charackter. It's missing the special feature for me. I can only hope that some of your new songs will go back to your roots. Till then I can only stick to your, kind of unique, old music. Wish you all the best! Cheers!
