There’s another difference between the twin’s animation in Inazuma during the Archon quest scene when the Raiden Shogun almost got Thoma’s vision. With Aether, he simply looks up at the Raiden Shogun after grabbing Thoma’s vision. With Lumine however, she brings Thoma’s vision to her chest as she looks up at the Raiden Shogun

So 3 main differences. 1. Aether has better upper body strength, while Lumine has better core balance and stronger legs. (Aether needs to use his arm to support his landing while Lumine doesn't, but Lumine needs both hands to push off the rock while Aether only needs one.) 2. Aether displays more open body language, while Lumine is more closed off. (Aether puts both hands on his hips and tends to expose himself more, while Lumine always has one hand tucked close to her body to protect herself.) 3. Aether tends to let his eyes take in his surroundings, while Lumine is more focused on her goals. (Aether looks around the knight's headquarters and takes in the interior of the building, while Lumine is more focused on their objective and doesn't bother to look around. Aether scratches his head and shrugs at not knowing where Xiao is, while Lumine immediately starts thinking of other places he could be.)

Despite that however she is still the reckless one/more "chaotic" ironically while Aether is actually the mind between the two. While he is more open socially that's just around people he trust and while he act more friendly he hides better his being suspicious than Lumine does who focus more on thinking rationally or not being distracted easily but deep down is as curious as Aether if not more but it is a hard thing to spot in their personality because it comes from brief animations and their body language etc. Lumine in a new scenario and place is more closed off but actually curious, as for Aether he openly shows his being curious but he's secretly way more on the defensive and in general his character always goes to the defensive more than Lumine does. For example Lumine is more reckless when fighting and charge straight on in her combat style, as for Aether he is more on the defensive and he cover up Lumine because she is reckless/doesn't actually think before fighting while Aether is more about strategy during fights, which makes him end up trying to cover up Lumine when there's a opening that might lead to her being attacked and not even noticing it, as their attacks almost always complement each other and show us that Lumine is more reckless during fights and Aether is more on the defensive, making Aether the one who focus more on strategy and defense because Lumine doesn't stop to think during fights and he have to protect the weak points when she's too distracted fighting, not to mention that while she is more aggressive he is more agile, but excluding the game damage/speed by Lore they are almost the same level but also not of strenght and speed. However while by game stats the difference is "bigger" by Lore the difference is way smaller and one of them could easily overpower the other.

1, by their bodies being "identical" in the regard of their design, Aether is by nature stronger in both legs and arms. (going by real world physics atleast). A male with a similar stature.. lets say.. 160cm and 60kg and a female with the same build, will in 99.9% of times be weaker in both upper and lower body.. the female however will in 99.9% of cases have a lower center of gravity. 2. fair bit of body language, nice point. 3. also a nice point to spot differences in how they operate and percieve things.

Interesting that in interaction to Jean, the place where Lumine looked is exactly the place where Lisa was standing in previous scene and then where she moved from, and Lumine's facial animation seemed to assess the level of threat and then she made eye move that no threat is coming from her either, also quite interesting thing that Lumine is Ambidexter and always have one hand ready, this is very common if you will look on videos about special forces and CIA or KGB agents, who have always their "main" hand ready, as her facial reaction in introduction to Jean scene, also in the scene where Dehya introduces some mercenaries and in scene in Ningguang's palace, etc... (ironic, that many spy movies ignore this little details)

So aether would whoop your ass to oblivion and lumine would kick your ass straight to hell

The part where Aether look around while Lumine look at people is actually interesting as it reflect real life psychology. Even in newborn babies, males tend to look around it's surroundings, while female babies tend to look at faces. There's also one where when snatching Thoma's vision. Aether held the vision slightly behind him, creating physical wall using himself between the vision and Raiden. Lumine held the vision near her chest, sending a psychological signal to Raiden.

She keeps it real and has a necessary level of caution. I don't hate Aether, but he does seem to trust a little too easily.

In the first couple of scenes of the Fontaine Archon Quest when the Traveler talks to the Magicians twins at the aquabus (Lyney and Lynette), Aether and Lumine react differently while they have their sibling moment. It ia more than Aether and Lukine are basically two half of a whole and this is represented in the cutscense. They hold the swors with opposite hands because the sibling is always there, covering the other side. And for the same reason Aether use more the upper body and Lumine the lower body. They developed their entire fightijg style around fighting alongside the other one.

Unlike in tower of fantasy Where even if your character is a tall dude in the cutscenes he becomes small and his movements is the same animation as the female model making him look girlie

They emphasize a lot the difference of body physique between male and female. One of the best is in 1:19 which shows that female have better center balance than male.

Not really, tbh Lumine is acting like her center of balance is lower than Aether's (you can see it in scene when she landed after jump), but she controls her body better when it come to agility, so it's not as much about center of balance, but of personal skill to control own body after specific actions, when Aether is more physical.

I made a post a long time ago about it that the twins balance each other out perfectly while also being perfectly represented by Anemo and Geo (as if the color scheme wasn't the hint). Lumine seems more experienced and outgoing while Aether often seems fascinated by things and is quite awkward, kind of like it's the first time he has to do things as he wants or has no one to tell him what to do. Which leads me to an image of Lumine always leading during their travels, choosing the destination on a whim with confidence, with Aether following, serving as her shield and making sure she's not struck in the back (Aether's fight poses in cutscenes always make him look defensive, think Fire Trailblazer skill pose). All of that kind of leads to another discussion about how both twins still fit the role of the Abyss Prince/ss and make perfect sense but that explanation could be too long. In short - Lumine is the outgoing twin, Aether is the protective twin

Honestly, I disagree. I agree with Lumine being more experienced via fighting and Aether being more curious, but their body languages and reactions seems to say otherwise. Lumine has a more closed off body language than Aether, While Aether is much more open to new experiences. I'd argue that Aether is the Outgoing But Protective Type while Lumine is the More Introverted but Combat Ready type.

Probably just repeating something someone else has said already, but Lumine actually did look around in the second scene, she just looked to her left while Aether looked to his right. This actually makes sense, since their attack animations when paired up show that they're used to covering different sides, as they use opposite hands. So it's natural for them at this pointhto look to a specific side when entering an area. It shows they're always on alert as they must be, as 'travellers'. Thanks for this video! It was great seeing these differences.

Don't forget during Klee's bye bye cutscene,Aether does a groove street style waving with Paimon while Lumine does a toodle loo hand gesture

I very much get the impression that Lumine is the more likely one to murder someone (that goes for her both in the role as the Traveller and as the Abyss sibling. frankly I think Traveller Lumine is more likely to murder than Abyss Prince Aether). she'd just be a lot more careful and calculated about it, less likely to be caught, probably wouldn't even feel as bad either.

I mean would be a bit awkward to see a version, where Aether behaves like a accomplished girl while Lumine behaves like a bold boy, no?

There are more differences, even in their casting skills animations.

Good to know they went the extra mile to do this.

even in xianyun's story quest it really just shows that aether basically represents the sun and lumine the moon. aether is more emotional/reactive and lumine more elegant. they've been going for that theme ever since, including in the birthday web event chibis.

I don't really get how Xianyun's SQ showed Aether as the sun and Lumine as the moon, but it's shown in other ways yes (theme colors, names, metaphoras...) However, I kinda disagree for the chibi arts. Aether is often shown as the "calmer" one, often closing his eyes and rarely even having a mouth, while Lumine it's the opposite for Lumine. However, Aether is shown to eat much faster than Lumine in those arts, and in Lyney/Lynette's birthday event when Lyney does a magic trick with rainbow roses for them, Aether is shown to have big sparkly eyes while Lumine is blushing a bit.

I really wouldn't have picked this cutscene as evidence. Aether mimes while speaking, they both look happy to eat food, and Lumine looked like a happy child with kites, that's all I'm gathering.

By god sake we spot the difference. But it was good to see how the dev care for such small detail in the game.

Aether is a bawler. He takes in everything and simply pressures opponent while overwhelming them with heavy attacks. Lumine is Technical. She prefers more methodical approach. She pushes for advantage and strikes while leaving no opening. They literally compliment each others blindside.

I like the idea that Lumine is shown to be more on guard and reserved with her surroundings vs Aether being more relaxed as a tribute to the fact that exploring an unknown world alone as a girl would be pretty intimidating. Not having her brother as a support to rely on probably has her more on edge since dangers are more of a threat to her.

honestly aether’s cutscene (wiping mouth and katheryne’s) was way cooler

This also shows the developers hard work and attention to detail. They don't cut corners. If would've been easy for them to copy the animations and call it a day but instead they added differences in the fine details to make them their own characters. Thank you Mihoyo!

Canonically Lumine is stronger. The second hit of her charged attack has a higher damage multiplier.

Just a minor nitpick, feel free to ignore this, but the bit about the traveler looking around Jeans office? Lumine was indeed looking around. It’s just really hard to see because she was looking in the opposite direction of Aether.

I imagine at that point that Jean was hidden behind Kaeya. The moment Lumine passed Kaeya, she was in line of sight of Jean. Aether continued looking around well beyond the point of when he had line of sight of Jean. To me, Aether generally seems more situationally aware. He's looking around because defence and information-gathering is his instinct. Lumine is searching for her objective and only for her objective, the moment she sets eyes on Jean she's locked in. I'm a Lumine player and her dialogue and behaviours have always suggested to me that she's the bolder and more direct of the duo. Never seen Aether's dialogue, but people have mentioned that he appears to be more defensive.

I wish you include the cutscene of when Childe transform into foul legacy. Lumine reached her hand towards him, Aether didn't.

That jump slide in sumeru aether wear gloves so he can touch the floor to do spiderman pose and lumine doesn’t wear gloves so do that pose would hurt a lot

They alway portray Aether to be physically stronger but lumine more agile, i think. Glad they keep the consistency in cut scenes

it is told earlier also aether is more towards defense while lumine is more towards offense.

I generally get the impression that Aether is physically stronger and more open and friendly but more clumsy and distractable whilst Lumine is more skilled and focused but more closed off from others

Another difference is in game play: Aether is right-handed, he only attacks with his right hand, while Lumine is Abdestra, and has an animation where she attacks with her right, and some she attacks with her left and there are some where she just simply uses her foot

It's so good to see that they pay attention to details between masculine and feminine movement patern...

Did you know that Lumine is ambidextrous? She uses her right hand for her sword and her left for summoning the elements

1:09 iirc, wasn't Aether left-handed? Meanwhile, Lumine is ambidextrous. You can see it with their combat. Aether use his left hand to use his sword and cast his Geo skill, but Lumine use one hand with her sword and the other when casting.

The thing is that woman have lower center of balance, but the actual landing after jump is more about personal skill and practice, this difference in center of balance is not that much to make woman unable to control own body.

@@namanyadav8061 After doing a big attack or surviving an ambush or many other instances Kiana routinely wipes her mouth. Infact in the fight in the cutscene for the herrscher of dominance because she takes extra time to wipe her mouth like she usually does instead of moving on to the next target she gets caught off guard and tied up by one of the puppets.

That's pretty neat rather than just a model change, this is why they're steps ahead of others.

This is the simple reason for the animation differences. Hoyo wants to make Aether more masculine feeling and Lumine more feminine. All the other ideas in the comments are silly. Like Lumine having greater control and leg strength, lol.

[1:20] just wanted to say that I think this detail highlights how the animators payed attention to the differences in male and female anatomy while animating. the reason Aether had to put his hand on the ground when he landed here is ‘cause as a man he has weaker lower body strength, so he had to use his upper body strength to help him keep his balance to stick that landing. then the reason Lumine was able to land on her feet without needing to support herself with a hand on the ground is ‘cause as a women she has stronger lower body strength than her brother, making it easier for her to balance her.

Really feels like both of them exists despite us choosing only one

1. Would have looked awkward if Lumine had the same pose as Aether in the fishing scene, no? 2. You REALLY expect that a GIRL pushed a heavy piece of stone ONE HANDED?

It's a video game and she can even push it with one finger if developers with animate that way... it is even dumb to care, important is that they paid attention even in small animations, to show personalities of this twin characters.

Drip. Despite all their other differences i refuse to believe anyone can truely believe lumine has better clothes than aether. Aethers whole design is unique and cool looking. Only thing i like about lumine design is that her hair flower changes color depending on the element and i guess whatever thats called thats on her arms

@@banditdoggo drip is personal choice for me I like Lumine's drip more. Anyways even if we both agree Aether's drip is better, it still doesn't define overall coolness, Aether seems lost in every cutscene while Lumine looks like an actual protagonist.

The ear ring, the cape with his vision symbol from the character menu split in half, the belt, the floating things on the cape, his hair, his shoulder guard, his gloves, and the front of his cape with the golden symbol on it. The only thing i can aay i dont like about him is his hair is way darker than lumines and they dont look like twins because of that

Aethers mouth wipe goes hard asf, ngl kinda wish that cutscene in particular flipped as you did it. (Give both animations randomly)

Long story short, they change it to make sure Lumine never spreads her legs too wide. Unlike the Chad Aether

dont forget the cutscene where childe was activating his foul legacy in the operahouse, and lumine looked more worried for childe while aether seemed more concerned about the entire situation.

Lumine is canonically stronger than Aether just a bit by having a very tiny amount of crit damage. (I think) The extra crit is probably from her legs.

Lumine asthetically doing it in heels. Thats my girl 😊

It feels like to me that if you choose Lumine that you basically making her go through the journey a second time, like some of her actions are because she's done all of it before.

this is the reason why honkai star rail using the same high for both main character so it doesn't need different animation.

HSR characters do not have skeletons at all, cos the combat system does not require them, even heights of characters are fictional, this is the same mesh for all characters, but only textures are different, when in Genshin small character literally have small skeleton, thin character have thin skeleton, etc... Funny thing that even bobas in Genshin have actual skeleton mesh and if character have big ones, then character may not fit in a specific place, where one with smaller ones fits without a single problem, and even enemy attack can hit there... dunno why they did it, cos it's mostly a thing that not many will even pay attention to or even notice, but in Genshin character we see is actually a character's skeleton and hitbox, in HSR there simply no need of this, cos combat is static and in world there is no place where it may be even used. So not, animations are not the only reason, and it does not require different skeletons to make different animations and vice versa, in HSR there is no content where it can be even used, also at least for now, another character is not an actual character that appears anywhere else, in Genshin both of siblings are actual characters, so there is a reason to make them slightly different, even when they are twins.

@@ivazr4527 You do not need actual skeleton for that at all, it's a mesh, a simple mesh, some idiots may call it also a skeleton, but that's quite a different thing and comments are not the place to explain technical aspects of making animations, especially when in one game actual visual model and actual skeleton model matches and another game, where you simply do not have any x, y, z combat or environmental interactions, other then simple-box contact and combat is absolutely static and calculates only in Y/N and there is no need to calculate any of height, width, position, etc... In HSR it's simple Y/N interaction, you cant' dodge by dashing, jumping, only by skill, position does not matter, heights does not matter, position in environment does not matter, etc... so there is no point to make character skeleton higher and is enough to use one mesh and make things like height visualized only by texture model, when in Genshin simply cos your character in smaller, enemy can miss attack on you and you can do the same, so the actual skeleton of the model is different and it even affects - speed, attack speed, attack range etc... cos it is actual height width depth of a model. Do you even know what Engine is ? You can do a lot of things with same instruments, you can build a simple chair, or you can build entire furniture.... What Engine even have to do with this ? Moving parts are model animations and does not require anything over that.

The apparent model, the model you see on monitor, and the true model, the actual model with mesh, skeleton, hitbox, AC box, etc... are different things and any normal developer does this by the needs of the game, when in game there is no attack that can be avoided by jumping, then there is not need to make jumping actual and not just visual, in HSR actual combat and "exploration" (if it's even possible to call it exploration in HSR, but nevermind...) does not require different true models for different characters, cos not height, nor width and nor length matters, also nor 3D position in the environment, but 2D X, Z axis is more than enough and it is calculating exactly in 2 dimensions. Also the model can contain many variables and different games use different ones to fit the needs of the specific game and there is no need to make f.e. Climbing animations, skeletons, BMs, HBs and even whole environment, etc... in the game where you do not make this Climbing even an option. And animations of movement have nothing to do with skeleton itself, if the animation was not meant to be a mechanics that will make character do something that will affect gameplay, like Ground Attack of the enemy for example, that can be avoided by jumping, then there is no need to create the whole model actually jump, but enough is to make just a visual animation of jumping, than may affect some environmental blocks, may not, but in the code model does not really changes its position in vertical axis, and vice versa, if in the game you have attacks that can be avoided by jumping, than visual jump should be an actual jump at the same time... As example HSR, the game do not have jumping or dashing at all and it's the same engine as you said... (it's not btw, only core is, also Engine is a bunch of instruments which developer uses to create the game and as with real instruments, you can use screwdriver and hammer to make a simple chair and use them to create whole furniture, same instruments, different product, so engine have nothing to do with this topic at all... And btw, character models mostly made in outside programs, like Blender for example, and then imported into engine of the game and many game developers use the same app to create model, but all of them do it in the game needs in mind and there is no need to make actual model able to do something, when this something will not even be an option in the game itself, it is waste of time and resources, also will make game heavier and more resource consuming).

I guess childe want to gentle with lumine I guess ?

Even with their Anemo and Geo bursts, Lumine uses her legs while Aether uses his arms

Dont forget when teammate at low hp, Lumine simply ask to take over while Aether "Let me at them" 💀
