Aethelflaed: Lady of the Mercians

Aethelflaed was the daughter of Alfred the Great and without her, I think Alfred's dream of a united England might have died with him. She's an extraordinary figure in the early medieval period and I strongly believe we should be discussing her more often.

Love the passion and agree that Aethelflaed was an incredible figure. One small point: the U in Gloucester is silent :-). At least it is now, and in itself that's interesting because of course the way we pronounce both people and place names from a thousand years ago is almost certainly not the way they were pronounced by the people of the time. English is an evolving language, something that would probably have thrilled and disappointed Alfred in equal measure :-).

Thanks for this! Great Aunt Aethelflaed was just a name in a compiled tree until I chanced upon a History Time video on her. I'm watching Season 4 of The Last Kingdom now, and wonder how many of her "damsel in distress" moments are for dramatic effect. But, I love love love Great Aunt Aethelflaed, and really like this video you've don on her!

Great stuff JB, your passion is infectious, we need more on Aethelflaed for sure. And aethelstan's early years as well, was he raised in Mercia by Aethelflaed or on the continent? Perhaps both considering the quality of the education he received. What a magnificent bloodline.

Wow, she must’ve been a total badass!! Thanks for the video! Super interesting. I’ve begun season 2 of The Last Kingdom and found your video when I decided to research Æthelflæd online.

Hells to the fricken yeah! I'm originally from Tamworth which was the ancient capital of Mercia back in the day :) There's a statue of Aethelfled at the train station and theoretically the point of her spear points from the station to the castle, although I was looking at it last time I was there and it's definitely off by about 20 degrees lol. But it's okay because that means it's accidentally pointing to the church instead!

Omg, I can't believe you are from Tamworth! What are the odds? And you are named Dane, lol! It's on my bucket list to go to Tamworth, even just to see the castle and statue!

@@jenniferbrooks I've never heard anyone ever say Tamworth is on their bucket list before :D Don't get me wrong, it's great to have the history but there are SO MANY better places to visit in the UK for history! Don't visit the UK just to see Tamworth :D Just check it out on the way from London to Liverpool or something ^_^ For Last Kingdom stuff, especially for an international visitor, York is probably the best place to go!

Great video. Just one small point. Gloucester (in Gloucestershire) is pronounced gloster... rhyming with Dr Foster. And no... I have no idea why we spell the names of some of our towns the way we do. I imagine to those not raised with these things being 'normal' it probably looks pretty dumb. And as an aside the shire part of Gloucestershire as with Yorkshire and Hampshire etc is more usually pronounced 'sure' (especially so in the north where I am) rather than the way a lot of Americans pronounce it rhyming with sire. That said when we refer to the shires in general we do pronounce it like sire. Confusing I know.

Very interesting video and it is the second time today that Aethelflaed has come up as Annie Whitehead was promoting her novelTo Be A Queen which is on special offer this weekend. For your information Gloucester is pronounced Gloster and I did not realise the ruins of St Oswalds Priory had Aetheflaed laid to rest there. I think it is time I watched The Last Kingdom.

I can never get Gloucester right! I picked up To Be a Queen and I'm looking forward to diving into it! I hope you enjoy the Last Kingdom--the first couple of seasons are fairly historically accurate but in the last couple, they have gone off a bit to make for a more entertaining story. It's a great show.

@@jenniferbrooks Jennifer. Regarding Aethelfled I would suggest the English Historian Michael Woods three part televised series on Alfred and the Anglo Saxons. Aethelfed is the subject of part 2. M Woods is is a noted Anglo Saxon scholar and presenter. The series first appeared on British TV in 2018 (and later on PSB America) and is well worth watching, as are his earlier - In Search of the Dark ages - series from the 1980's. These cover, Eric the Blood Axe, the last Viking King of York. King Offa of Mercia, Alfred, Athelstan, amongst others. You will get to see the areas in which these events took place. You will not be disappointed.

I love Aethelflaed, unfortunately I don't have any biography about her, but as soon as I find a good biography, I will read with a lot of dedication. Like her, I also love Eleanor of Aquitaine, they were both great women of their time.

I read The Viking Wars by Max Adams two years ago that gave a pretty good account of Aethleflaed and more than suggested that she was indeed more capable than Edward and essentially the ruler of Mercia. I don’t know of a biography. I think she was very special

Interesting take on my favorite historical figure. I was also disappointed in the Warrior Queen. Didn't learn anything new about her. I found The Edge on the Sword by Rebecca Tingle a far more entertaining read. It also has a lot of interesting historical notes. I have also written an article that poses the question Did Aethelflaed plan the creation of England. It's only a short article and if you would like me to send it to you, drop me a line. brianspendelow@slingshot.co.nz
