Aesthetics of Hotline Miami

Ойындар

Hotline Miami is one of my favorite games. I adore the unique style and story of it. With this video I want to share with everyone else what exactly made these two games so incredible to me and a lot of other people.
I'm changing up my content a bit again. I always wanted to do video essays but they were daunting task, and well this...I don't know if I ever worked so hard on anything in my life before, which means I haven't worked really hard which is true. But this took a lot of effort, strangely it didn't took time, and the only things that annoyed me was writing the script for Wrong Number and rendering.
I'd also like to thank my friend Bruce for getting me into Hotline Miami! He got me the game completely randomly and encouraged me to keep playing it even though I sucked at it. So this video exists, thanks to him.

Man, you can't seem to make a bad video can you :D. I've watched a few videos on hlm and hlm2 and this one is definitely the best I've seen so far. I hadn't noticed a lot of the easter eggs you covered. Also for 24:51 , the Dirty Hands technique is a reference to the panthers you fight in Showdown as they're panther paws. Again, this is a fantastic retrospective on the series, incredible job :D. also good fumo posts ;)

I became obsessed with Manny Pardo right when I saw him after playing Hotline Miami 2 for the first time (Even though my brother hated him and told me not to like the character, Which for some reason made me like him more) So now I’m crazy for the ‘Crazy cop gone bad’ sort of trope. So now I have a really unhealthy obsession with this character. Anyways nice vid.

Returning to the menu screen after completing the ending of Hotline Miami 2, being welcomed by the music and the visuals finally understanding what they truly mean, will forever be the most chilling thing I've ever experienced in any video game. 'Untitled' by the Green Kingdom might honestly be one of the best tracks in the entire game because it really sells that feeling. From relatively peaceful but melancholic on the first startup to absolutely depressing an haunting towards the ending. Absolutely fantastic video man! Really hit me in the feels a bunch of times looking back at this masterpiece of game series. The first Hotline Miami was a fantastic experience but The second one truly hit different. Not many games really make you feel the way HM2 did for me at least. Keep up the good work man, hopefully your channel will blow up some day! Also, god I still have ptsd from playing the Level 'Dead Ahead' on Hard mode

This is probably the greatest video about these games I've ever watched. I even learned little details that went over my head like the way the son blinks his eyes and his playstyle choice items reflecting important events in his life. You did an outstanding job with this video my guy

Holy shit dude, this was one of the best video essays I've seen in ages. I knew you had good editing, but your script writing is stellar too! I wasn't expecting that from my favorite Ultrakill montage creator! I've watched a lot of other video essays about these games, but this was the one that best outlined the underlying themes and explained the "why" behind all the crazy events. You have good taste in games dude!

Never thought Hotline Miami goes that deep into worldbuilding and characters. It's actually amazing, so thank you for this video! I also missed a everything in sequel because I hated it... the game is way different not only in sense of story, but in sense of game design too, and it was quite awful experience for me. The maps are so open so when enemy hears your gunshot they come from afar, and they're pretty fast too. So if you are out of bullets or if you didn't react, you're dead. There also were a lot of instances when I got killed by someone who was OFF SCREEN. And it ruined all fun for me so I didn't even bother completing it. The first Hotline Miami had a huge impact on me, but I think what makes me hate the game too is how inconsistent enemy behavior is. I shoot, they hear it and run towards me. That's what I expect. But sometimes I shoot and nothing happens. Sometimes I run to a guy and I can kill him from his back with ease, and sometimes he magically decides that he will react this time, instantly turning on spot and killing me instead. It always moments like this when I figure out some tactic how to complete the level, and it works until it doesn't. So although I think Hotline Miami is a great game, with very interesting ways to tell story without letting player know how deep he is into it, it's also worth noting that Hotline Miami has flaws that make me sad, because I really want to enjoy this game

Yeah if the gameplay doesn't click for you, I can see how it can be hard to get into the game. The first time I played the game I ragequitted and didn't want to play it, the only reason I continued is that my friend encouraged me to keep going because it would be worth it

Ah, how convenient I look up a “hotline Miami aesthetic” video only to find this has been uploaded but a month ago! The idea came to me because I just watched How To Drink’s latest Cyberpunk video, and his explanation of cyberpunk as a genre versus an aesthetic got me thinking. In his first video on the series, the aesthetics he chose were different, reminded me more of Hotline Miami, and I realized a lot of people do that when trying to replicate a “cyberpunk” aesthetic. It got me thinking: what’s the difference? I see a lot of people describe HM’s aesthetic as “vaporwave” or “synthwave,” both of which I feel are too mellow and calm, but simply calling it an “80’s” aesthetic feels to broad for the specific hyper violence of it. And cyberpunk aesthetics I think of as grittier, combining the neon lights with grime and industrial dullness. Whereas in hotline Miami, everything is stylized, even the blood and the pipes. It makes sense there’s a conflation, Cyberpunk emerged as a genre in the 80’s, and HM is set in the 80s. Anyways, this is a great video. I really do think discussing the themes of something is a very important part of understanding the choices made in its aesthetic.

A lot of cyberpunk, synthwave and vaporwave aesthetics get put into one because they all have a lot of similiarites, especaly the colors, but if you delve deeper there's major difference between all aesthetics

For the ending that is scarily similar, a missle was fired near Taiwan, similar to BF4 and BO2 in scenario, but they might be harassed because "guilty of association" similar to how the Russians are treated by now, leaving this world isn't as scary as it sounds, more political instability in the US, and in some major western countries... Chilling

This video is great. And the ending is... so good... The only thin I want to say about is the phrase "innocent Russian". I'm Ukranian, and I hated Russian nation because of how fucked up they are, how many horrible things they made. Of course, some of them could be realy good people, but russian nation is so brainwashed, that you can't even call them people. I don't know if there is a way to open their eyes, and even if we'll do that, that doesn't mean that it will be easy or if they will refuse to elaborate. What i'm trying to say, that Russian nation is so dead brained, that it's realy hard to tell them truth and make them belive it. They had told lies for so long and listened to them for so long that they will not hear truth. Maybe russian people from Hotline Miami can listen to other than their govermant, but in real life they like hivemind, that belive only in the words of Putin. And this is not Putin's war, this is war between the world and whole Russian nation. If Putin die, there will be another person like him, maybe even worse. And.. That all that I wanted to say. I hope you understood me. Have a nice day.
