Lyrics:
Born garbage day, warden of the shawarma plate, fork a naked eye, and trade survival tips with tardigrades, ephemera burning where the morning look like haunted marble cake, parkas and pajama pants, I’m part of what don’t march-in-place, I’m partial to the closest roving pack of gnashing gums, smoking out the local protein, brokering the rabbit punch, I’m broken, fuck a focus group, fuck your folk, and Toto too, the produce of a pencil-neck who never met a social cue, eye of the archfiend, appetite for alpha dogs, step into the party with a killing jar and shadow box, like “Who invited acid wash?” I’m shopping for the mantelpiece, overkill is catalogued and crammed into banana leafs, polaroids around him like a visit from the vanta black, miniatures in Biggie shirts and minutes that he can’t get back, it isn’t just gorillas in a camera trap, it triggers, the history pack a little aftermath in every image, look
I should paint a eye on the front door, I should tell time by the sun more, I want a flaming arrow shot into a creeping raft, I’m kidding I just want the cheapest shit you people have
No displayed blazonry, unmistakably mutinous, the mood is disillusionment, shit, even Cindy Lou Who quit, I’m super stupid, future looking tuna fish and suture kit, in route to mute the TV and a view without a boot to lick, bruised at the nucleus and drooling through the bells of war, meet the neighbors when your resume is “skeleton-with-oar”, “Ummm, that’s really cool your -poodle made the paper”, let’s keep it at shoes in a elevator, he’s a hat and coat, floating with no discernible visage, the villains turn to their homies who mostly turn into crickets, I’m part of a larger ghosting, I go to work with the wizards, who already voted homecoming theme as a burning village, the damn shame campaign pivot when you in the field, thinning blood and newly surfacing disorder, spin the wheel, feeders out to slow the roll, reaper on the protocol, people you confide in will be spotted eating rodents whole
I should hang a skull on the side door, I should drink water from the sky more, I want a thousand lanterns drifting on a summers wind, I’m only joking, y’all can feed me to the fucking pigs
Marshmallows over magma from the mantle has been cancelled, how snappy can you adequately scaffold? Happy canvassing the neighborhoods I’ll never take advantage of as patron, as a patient they are plays to be a phantom of, naan under the bandages, examine ’til he vanishes, I don’t feel a social pull to show the wolves where grandma lives, I find deliverance from evil either in a sedentary binge, or spring interning with the cemetery winds, no stacked sash or accolades from authority, the backstory gets all back-into-a-corner-y, abuses in the feeding tube, that circle back to eat at you, bacteria that tip the hat, adversity that gleam the cube, it’s tit for tat with slippery aristocrats who pity cops, and brilliant rats who find the grit to slip out of the Skinner box, the moat’s supposed to keep the rivals out, the calls are coming from inside the house
I should nail boards to the back door, I should feed squirrels from my hand more, I want to meet the maker in a proper suit and shoes, I’m lying, let ‘em find the body with the loot removed

The fact that his mind, soul, & experiences continue to breed nonrepetitive topics for him to write about is just plain cool asf. & he has always been great but there is something incredibly special about the instrumentals, his sound & just everything about these tracks...I don't even know how to formulate what I'm feeling into words. In my opinion, it isn't often that an artist, after so many years in the game, throws out one of the best albums theyve created to date...but he did done it. 🧡

The first one was a Viking Funeral coupled with basically the other Side of an Extravagant send-off, No thing. The second one is a Chinese Funeral "Send-off of the Spirits" The Chinese Lanterns, very Solemn, very "Sacred".. Again, coupled with the other side of Extravagance, "No Thing". He goes from wanting to be sent off Remembered and Loved, On the other hand... Just chuck his Body in a Ditch when we're done with him. I never thought I hear my own Conflictions said in such a Beautiful and Articulate way.

Big Aes fan here. This current incarnation def took this form - of this kind instrumentation and song style - to become realized at the Skelethon and Impossible Kid albums. I slightly prefer Skelethon but both great in terms of Aesop imo. This new album seems to get even harder into the rock instrumentation. +1 Hail Mary Mallon "Are You Gonna Eat That" has some fun songs worth checking out too (tho i do prefer Bestiary more). This a group with Aesop and Rob Sonic.

I think you've got it right. There's really only two ways to take it. Either he is a survivalist who craves meaning in life but his instincts won't let him become vulnerable enough to get there, or he believes his survivalist instincts show him the truth about how little the idea of a 'meaningful death' is worth. Personally, I subscribe to the former. Aes often glorifies his 'outcast' qualities in one breath, then critiques them in the next.

The hooks feel so unique yet so universal. I find myself going that's me all day, wait, that's all of us all day. We want to look nice on our last day but deep down understand that it really doesn't matter to anyone other than the 'me' that disappears once I stop caring about my last day. This will happen at the moment of death, and many times before if we are blessed. It's freeing to not care about your corpse, but yet we strive to go out looking good. Life is a blessing Peace Be With You

Listen, I've been aware of Aesop Rock for a couple of years now. Never understood a damn thing he says but all I know is that I was always intrigued. I'm a guy that is a nerd at heart but my reality was always the same type of music you'd hear in any urban environment ( gangsta rap, bitches, drugs, money etc) it wasn't til like 2016 that I even started to really love Lupe Fiasco bc I couldn't connect to his style and abstract lyrics. I feel like Aesop is an entirely different breed of an artist. My current favorite artist and whom I consider to be the greatest lyricist known to man (my opinion of course) is Cambatta. His latest SOLO project is LSD in which I consider a masterpiece. But when I listen to this album I'm scratching my head like there's clearly something different here that I can't put my finger on. Can someone explain the difference and if you have heard Cambatta, how does he compare to Aesop?

I had to listen to this album twice because the production is so fucking inventive that I couldn't pay attention to lyrics, now I'm playing back for lyrics and on this song the hook evolves lyrically in a thematic way that is beyond anything I've ever heard. Let's break it down: No.1 "I should paint an eye on the front door. I should tell the time by the sun more. I want a flaming arrow shot into a creeping raft. I'm just kidding I just want the cheapest shit you people have." Subtext here suggests: line one, in modern life we are all being constantly observed, the house here represents the self. Line two, I want to live free of that sphere of playing for the masses. Line three, I want to create for what I believe and be recognized for it before death (viking funeral). Line four, I know I'll never get to be heard for the aforementioned respect unless I sacrifice it all and play the game. No. 2 "I should hang a skull on the side door. I should drink water from the sky more I want a thousand lanterns drifting on a summers wind I'm only joking ya'll can feed me to the fucking pigs" Subtext: line one, If you sacrifice it all for the audience you're dead before the house comes down. Line two, I want to fill myself with creativity from a place that is real. line three, I want you to join me in a mass celebration of our lives for that creativity where we collectively appreciate that (Tōrō nagashi festival in Japanese culture). Line four I surrender give me to the fools that will swallow me as pearls. No.3 "I should nail doors to the back door, I should feed squirrels from my hand more I wanna meet the maker in a proper suit an shoes I'm lying I want em to find the body with the loot removed" Subtext: line one, I should shut off the thoughts in the back of my head telling me to be true. Line two, yet again a begging to return to true art. Line three, I want to die knowing I've been true to myself. Line four, If we don't create honestly, we die with nothing to our name. Amazing. But hey, it's no thing.

The song hammers home the idea that the body becomes worthless at the point of death, and the spirit carries on... hence the title of the record. I believe many here misinterpret the crucial lines as self destructive.

Every "I should" line rings true to me, though I'm choosing to interpret boards as a dog door. I don't care what you do with me once I'm dead, I'm dead, and fuck god, I have questions so I might show up in that suit but no god who leaves a world in this unfinished, unhappy state deserves to be in that place.

Born garbage day, warden of the shawarma plate Fork a naked eye, and trade survival tips with tardigrades Ephemera burning where the morning look like haunted marble cake Parkas and pajama pants, I'm part of what don't march-in-place I'm partial to the closest roving pack of gnashing gums Smoking out the local protein, brokering the rabbit punch I'm broken, fuck a focus group, fuck your folk, and Toto too The produce of a pencil-neck who never met a social cue Eye of the archfiend, appetite for alpha dogs Step into the party with a killing jar and shadow box Like "Who invited acid wash?", I'm shopping for the mantelpiece Overkill is catalogued and crammed into banana leaves Polaroids around him like a visit from the Vantablack Miniatures in Biggie shirts and minutes that he can't get back It isn't just gorillas in a camera trap, it triggers The history pack a little aftermath in every image Look I should paint a eye on the front door I should tell time by the sun more I want a flaming arrow shot into a creeping raft I'm kidding I just want the cheapest shit you people have It's no thing No displayed blazonry, unmistakably mutinous The mood is disillusionment, shit, even Cindy Lou Who quit I'm super stupid, future looking tuna fish and suture kit In route to mute the TV and a view without a boot to lick Bruised at the nucleus and drooling through the bells of war Meet the neighbors when your resume is "skeleton-with-oar" "Ummm, that's really cool your poodle made the paper" Let's keep it at shoes in a elevator He's a hat and coat, floating with no discernible visage The villains turn to their homies who mostly turn into crickets I'm part of a larger ghosting, I go to work with the wizards Who already voted homecoming theme as a burning village The damn shame campaign pivot when you in the field Thinning blood and newly surfacing disorder, spin the wheel Feeders out to slow the roll, reaper on the protocol People you confide in will be spotted eating rodents whole I should hang a skull on the side door I should drink water from the sky more I want a thousand lanterns drifting on a summers wind I'm only joking, y'all can feed me to the fucking pigs It's no thing Marshmallows over magma from the mantle has been cancelled How snappy can you adequately scaffold? Happy canvassing the neighborhoods I'll never take advantage of his patron As a patient they are plays to be a phantom of Nan under the bandages, examine 'til he vanishes I don't feel a social pull to show the wolves where grandma lives I find deliverance from evil either in a sedentary binge Or spring interning with the cemetery winds No stacked sash or accolades from authority The backstory gets all back-into-a-corner-y Abuses in the feeding tube, that circle back to eat at you Bacteria that tip the hat, adversity that gleam the cube It's tit for tat with slippery aristocrats who pity cops And brilliant rats who find the grit to slip out of the Skinner box The moat's supposed to keep the rivals out The calls are coming from inside the house I should nail boards to the back door I should feed squirrels from my hand more I want to meet the maker in a proper suit and shoes I'm lying, let 'em find the body with the loot removed It's no thing
