A message from Aesop Rock -
"Here is something new - KLUTZ.
Occasionally song structure eludes me and it feels good. No problem-solving or pesky hit chorus, just rambling. Klutz is such a moment. I had started a couple things to this beat before sacrificing it to the gods of not-shutting-up, but this seemed a fitting fate. I hope you enjoy it.
My longtime video collaborator, Rob Shaw, helped visualize my long-windedness, and I’m excited to have Steve Espo Powers gracing the artwork for the release.
Lyrics below. Thank you."

Lyrics -
Can’t motherfuck a motherfucker, from the underfunded Klutz who never undercut the butcher, The pick-a-booger-at-your-wake is bumping “I’m your pusher” also at your wake, Juvenile Intruders at the gate, brooding over waking history that bubbles from the blinking 12s of VCRs and Microwaves, like time machines for shrinking elders, rifling through their recipe, carrots, onions, celery, what unique amalgam of piss and repugnant energy spun him out of the 70s, to b-line for dessert? Fire-eater trying to keep it on the green side of the dirt, this is tea-time with the worst, geriatrics on decline of berserk, back in my day we were 3x more alert, now I go through my old clothing trying to find nostalgic threads to sell, walk away feeling like I should have never dressed myself, sincerely I was never on the cutting edge, my hand was on the hilt, you’re free to build with the other end, shriek into the vacuum If in spite of your accomplishments, you wake up feeling empty like Houdini’s grave probably is, volley with the quintessential digital-ager, Im offended by everything, my opinions comes in manger, oh boy, depreciating since they drove me off the lot, still into ghost stories and pot and the classic coconut bra, procedural crime drama shows with holes in the plot, and reminding clones there’s more to coping than a nose full of snot, ah, old pros throw 'bows to the 808, you couldn't throw a rope over a baby gate, bishop to queen 4 in damn Daniels under ram skulls, plan for cloudy with a chance of anvils, fever dreams of padded cells and jagged pills in frozen pipes, socialites from pageant hell with plastic smells and robot eyes, I’m hoping you all grow into the sentience you assume, as your moment of self-reflection is a moment for me too, look, with the steel chair, sure to serve the veal rare, brush up your evasion and basic tactical field care, I was on that constant futile rage before the internet, I been ignored for longer than you’ve been interested, the posse promise you nobody feels threatened by a scarecrow covered in crows who feel welcomed, that’s like hellions thinking hell is just ok but needs some polish, It helps to know intimidation’s all about the optics, come duck a bounty, it's a hoot, Suffolk County it's a zoo, puppy chow and bitches brew, it's not exactly chicken soup, it’s heavy-lifters lifting, it’s ginseng on his whistling, it’s we don’t find the flippancy convincing, 2 for flinching, older yeller, never knew a no-kill shelter in his doggie days, now I draw my neighbors over Kouign-amanns and coffee stains, a walled and whirling urchin, more observant than audacious, I document the great unwashed and curse in Lithuanian, for a gallery of grifters channeling Sid’s action figures grafted with his little sister’s after markers glue and scissors, it’s trippy, the truth and fiction moving to a center, maybe it’s weirder they’ve never been photographed together, sometimes the stomach disappears from under a retreating lens, and patterns of a need to please abusive folk reveal themselves, I’m peeling back the layers, I’m sneaking past the lasers, I’m a lover, I’m a fighter, I’m a seed to blackened acres, the dogs I think are following me home are out to kill me, your music makes a motherfucker wanna move to Elm Street, rejection of the spirit by the body at your service, if you mess-up every friendship come get swept up in the current, here, wheels fall off of cars when they see him, seas part, green trees march out of Eden, I'm known to eat the heart and keep the archery uneven, are you starting to be part of the kinesis?

I dont think hes overlooked or under rated but theirs no way the complexity of his lyrics could find mainstream success. Hes still well respected and i doubt if you ask many artist who he is they would reply with "idk". Well maybe trap artists since hes basically the exact opposite.

@@truesalt9011 For real though? Back when guys like him and El-P were doing their thing there was a big stigma against white boys doing avant-garde shit like this. Cats would take take a look at your vinyl, see that shit in there and be like: 'oh, you're one of THOSE guys'. For real. Nobody gave them the time of day 'till Dre boosted Eminem. I'm not saying 'rap' used to be racist, per se, but a lot of talented white guys got left in the dust - for reasons that had little to do with their actual talent or the quality of their music. No big deal, they lifted their game and did their thing, and I love seeing dudes still being relevant - like, the underground has risen to the surface these days. Better late than never.

I feel like this man is not just an underground rapper, he's a poet of this millennium. Every single song of Aesop has a story or a narrative which is not limited to him only, but is a story of every urban soul trapped in the modernity of machines and oligarchy. Glad you haven't ran out of fables to share; we'll keep listening to them!

@@W7RSON that''s likely, god knows how long he ponders over those lyrics. I'm a Masters student in English Literature and I believe Aes is a genius level writer, not just in rap but in all forms of writing. He combines obscure references that can only be compared to a modern day "Waste Land" with rhyme schemes that are impeccable, then add social commentary and personal insight to that. It's insane. I wish to become a university lecturer in English lit and Aes will be on my module for sure. (If i misspelled anything in my comment, I have had a liberal amount of whisky sorry).

This is so damn good. Everything about this works. Aes's otherworldly imagery, intense introspection, and his physical delivery, which is so uniquely his own (but also reminiscent of early hip-hop). Meanwhile, the director's use of so many takes in a linear pairing with the song, and the simultaneously spooky and vintage aesthetics, are absolutely blowing my mind. F***ing cool. As a fan who didn't know about Aes until I was 42, I haven't been this excited for a new album in a LONG time.

I have been an Aesop Rock fan since Music for Earthworms. My favourite track ever has always been Abandon All Hope despite all the other greats. However I have listened to Klutz at least twice a day since it was released on KZread and it is insanely under rated. Every time I play it I understand more about each verse. This is modern day artistry at its best. Who ever put a thumbs down to this video should only be upset that it doesn’t come with an exegesis bar for bar, or that there’s no album to go with it.

NAH thats the joke, people talk about aes like he got complex meanings or big messages, He doesn't, that's the point. the artist's of old don't have complex meanings either the four year undergrad program is a weeding out of the uninterested and wild. A great fantasy of mine in school (I never really had a good art class in college) was imagining that the original artist was there to critique the textbook interpretation of what they wrote. I legitimately don't think many artists have a big enough ego to really see all the symbolism that their fans do. Aes writes songs about being different and he does well because he commits to writing them in what I would consider a different language than traditional rap. His difference is honest and this honesty resonates with people. Even if the pugnacious mood his music has always had has only become mainstream in the last decade. My point is that aes is not successful because he is a real smart guy and his songs are not deep because there are complex messages, Aes is successful because he is smart enough not to be dishonest with what he thinks is cool and his songs are deep because he finds new ways to express feelings that other people can connect with.

Thank you for the shout out of the Lithuanian language. Appreciate a lyrical genius recognising its greatness, even if it was used for comedic effect. For anyone wanting to know, this Proto-Indo-European language managed to retain linguistic features found in Ancient Greek and Sanskrit. This can be very useful when figuring out the many alternate meanings a single phrase or text may have due to the societys of both languages basing their lifestyles on philosophy (which in essence is the study of the possibilities of the universe through thought).

Love how complex and metaphorical he is, always making confections even after years of listening to the same tracks. Keep up the amazing work Aes.

I always thought that this bar was a double metaphor, the ''you're free to build with the other end'' meaning facing the other end of the sword, aes' hand on the hilt being the contrast but also like a self refrence to the bar itself saying you're free to interpret the latter end of the bar how you want, I might be reaching but it would make sense imo, your interpretation makes perfect sense too so it could even be a triple lol, who knows but that's the beauty of aesop, everyone has different interpretations

"Sincerely I was never on the cutting edge- my hand was on the hilt- you’re free to build with the other end." He's saying it wasn't ever him that made his music good. He just laid ideas out in cryptic and wordy terms (his hand was just on the hilt, not showing the blade), then us as listeners built our own concepts and meaning around his vague words. At first I thought he was mocking us for enjoying his music so much even though he was never actually "cutting-edge," but I think he's more giving kudos to the listeners for being able to "see the blade" even when it wasn't fully shown to us, meaning we were able to see Aesop's value despite his cryptic and wordy (and truly poetic imo) lyrics.
