    Pro tip on the rocket fuel: Don't use plain table sugar. Use Sorbitol. It has a smoother burn rate and lower pressure. Also, mix the two ingredients with enough water to dissolve the sugar and heat them in a pan (VERY LOW HEAT!!). Once evaporated, you will have a lightly brown, thoroughly mixed fuel. Pour that into a mould the same dimension as your rocket cavity greased and lined with a thick paper tube. When it cools push out the fuel slug (grain as they are called) and you are ready to go. The paper tube and tight fit will help keep the flame from going around the outside of the grain and causing a pressure spike. If you need more power, push a rod into the middle of the grain before it cools. This hole will create greater surface area for the flame and the fuel will burn faster. For an even faster burn, create multiple grains. You can use these parameters to raise or lower internal pressure to suit how much your rocket can withstand. Check out Richard Nakka's site for all the information you would ever want to know about experimental rocketry. There are a ton of resources there for anyone who is curious.

    If you are familiar with the film 'Hunt for the Red October' the plot focuses around getting a Russian sub with a new type of propulsion system called a "Caterpillar" in the movie. If I remember right it basically used an Archimedes screw to propel the submarine with little to no cavitation, thus making it run silent. That would be kind of cool to explore.

I did a little research project in high school on how to make rocket candy more powerful, by looking into sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol etc. instead of sucrose, and also by adding sulfur and metal powders such as Al and Mg to the mix. Mannitol, a bit of sulfur and very fine Al powder (which you should make by grinding charcoal and Al together in a ball mill, so the Al doesn't oxidise) was the best one. Don't know the exact ratios of the top of my head.

    A University in Hull, England is doing something interesting that you could use a 3d printer for: They are experimenting with using compressed air flowing over a rod (perpendicular) to direct the jet of air to use as dynamic controls. When the air passes over the top of the rod, boundary effects pull the air downward as it leaves the device. Downward movement of the air acts like down aileron on the wing. Passing the air under the rod has the opposite effect. You could also use the printer to experiment and make better propellers for RC aircraft. I would try to make a Prandtl style propeller for greater efficiency and reduced noise. Would be handy to have these on a quadcopter drone to reduce noise.

    Theme suggestion: You have been working so hard to create a good pulse jet/rocket engine, why not put your knowledge and hard work to the test, make a plane powered by one! It has to be able to carry its own fuel, and have at least 30 seconds in stable flight. Along with this, another idea is to use your micro controller skills to rig it with a functional steering system. Then you can try your luck at perfectly crashing it into a tomato.

  • @adriansaidan1736

    @adriansaidan1736

    @@alphabravo3683 printing the lining is massively cost prohibitive. 3D printing excels at producing items of complex geometry for cheap (compared to tooling up for mass production or machining traditionally) but it is not the tool for bulk material (such as furnace lining). Just one liter of SLA resin costs anywhere from 60-150$, and given that ceramic resin is likely a lot more advanced than conventional resin, i would not at all be surprised if a bottle surpassed 150. On the other hand, kaowool lining (refractory wool) can be had for about 100$ for 24"*12"*2" which is sufficient to line a small furnace in its entirety.

    So I used to make something.similar to this when I was a kid, about 30 years ago. I found that one way to get a nice even consistent burn, was to melt the potassium nitrate, and sugar mixture, and pour it into the rocket. When it cools, it's a solid. Also, I used rolled paper for the rocket body, since we didn't have 3d printers.

    Solid rockets most often explode due to defects in the fuel, which allow the burning front to access a larger area, causing an increase in pressure, causing faster burning... Try melting the mixture and pouring it into the mold. Is usually better. Also, use a silicone cone to form the burning chamber, it gives a more uniform flame front through the fuel (cylinder gets wider, meaning you start burning more fuel at once. Cone area stays more stable). AND DON'T LAUNCH MODEL ROCKETS IN THE CITY, YOU'RE GOING TO GET MODEL ROCKETS BANNED LIKE THAT!

    As someone who has a decent amount of experience making solid rocket fuel, here are a couple tips. Firstly, use glucose powder instead of cane sugar. Glucose is a simpler molecule and thus has a cleaner burn, producing more thrust. Secondly, melt the fuel into a paste rather than pour powder into the tube. This does 2 things. Firstly it better mixes the fuel and oxidiser, and secondly it gets rid of any moisture that may be in the mix. Do not caramelise it however or you’ll end up with a dirtier burn. If done right you should get a mostly white looking paste with a brown tinge. Lastly add some red iron oxide to your fuel. It doesn’t need a lot, maybe half a gram per rocket.
