This song was written while he got clean off of drugs. There's no way he was high. I have a similar experience, When you get recovery in your life amazing things happen. God inspires you. hes talking about how he hung out with the wrong people and left out the good people.... "had an angel of mercy to see me through all my sins."... When you finally get sober you realize you had God watching over you all those years..."when i lost my grip and i hit the floor" means when he no longer could control the drug use and it spiraled out of control. " thought i could leave but couldnt get out the door" that means he couldn't stop the drugs even if he wanted to because addiction controls every aspect of your life , to the point where your family, career, and stability doesn't matter, he wanted desperately to stop using but couldn't.... "It's Amazing in the blink of an eye you finally see the light, Its amazing when the moment arrives you know you'll be alright." This may be hard for you to understand but it means he had a spiritual experience, the obsession is lifted and today he has a choice. almost like divine intervention when God changes your whole way of thinking. "you have to learn to crawl before you learn to walk, but i just couldn't listen to all that righteous talk" - means you have to learn how to live life on life's terms before you really can live life. "one last shot , permanent vacation" is a metaphor or 2 meanings. The last shot to be successful with the band and the last shot to get sober or die. Singing for the 'Desperate Hearts' hes talking about the people still caught in the grips of addiction that they will one day have a spiritual experience. and hence the dramatic guitar solo

I hate that, cause I never did

Not only the Orchestra iced it, the violins at the end are down right killing it. So awesome. And as for the lyrics, there is more than your mind perceives there to be. The song must have been written on drugs, because connections, links of meanings and references are so visible and clear when you're high.

I am sure it was written while ST was high. The song is about addiction, heroin and low points in his life! Watch his performance of this song when he was in rehab at Recovery Road. You will see the emotional impact this song has on Steven Tyler! AMAZING!

I can't really hear a difference from this and the original... All they did was pump up the volume of the orchestral parts from the original.... Not really a difference in the 2.. Still a great song though
