I've read both their books, and I can see why there's friction between the two of them at times - they're two totally different personalities, yet have done - and hopefully will continue to do - more great music together. Loved them since the early '70s.

@ssSocialStudies I agree with you. He does seem to be the most religious one of the group. He's said some really inspirational things, and Amazing made me go back to Christ. So what if he curses a lot, I do too but that doesn't mean I'm not a christian cuz I am =)

Hey you know what...? I'm already in love! Aerosmith and Van Halen are my #1 two absolute favorite bands too... Steven Tyler and David Lee Roth ARE my very two biggest idols and influence for being a singer as in vocals wise... I'm 28 years old and have a band which just started as of pretty recently and looking to bring the old style and their type of lyricism back... I was just very surprised I found you and your comment here! Are you the woman in my dreams? Ha...! P.S. You are kind of cute by the looks of it also by the way... Hehe... Sorry, not trying to come off super strong just thought I'd share a little with you. I'm really passionate about it, it's kind of my biggest dream... Have a good one my lady! 🎩😎😉🎙❤💎

I think he might be trying to point out that in 1987, before they really became huge again with PV, the sound of the band was not going to be rap based. Some people might have expected an album full of rap collaborations!

Am I the only one who was struck by irony, knowing what I know now, from Joe Perry's comment about LL Cool J? In fact, LL Cool J would be an improvement over some of the people Aerosmith has ended up collaborating with.

Ironic he mentions Van Halen and Motley, but not GNR as far as of bands they've influenced.

Personally I don't think they were much of an influence on Van Halen (unless Van Halen said so). And Eddie Van Halen's guitar is so different than AS's style. Slash did say Rocks really influenced them. Since none of those bands sound the same, I often think influence is just what is possible--like AS was listening to Led Zeppelin but it's not as if Joe's guitar is like Page...but what is possible with heavy drums, or sophistication of guitar. Do you know what I mean? All these great 70s rock bands were all looking at each other and getting ideas, and when playing alongside each other, especially at all the big festivals, it probably help push them harder. It's like when Van Halen came out with their debut album (very successful) they opened for Black Sabbath. Deep Purple opening for AS. These weren't minor opening bands. Many of these opening bands were headlining rather quickly. I don't think it's really working that way anymore...not to that magnitude. (I could be wrong, it just seems that way to me.)

***** I agree they dont sound anything like Van halen. I hear it a tiny bit in Motley and bit more in GNR. it's interesting you mentioned the festivals of the 70's. there were so many fo those and now it's unheard of. I think they tried to do a blues/heavy rock thing like Zep, but Joe isn't the guitar player that page was and they weren't as grandiose as Zep. Aerosmith was more of harder, faster stones, beginning of punk sound.

+Trulysarcastic44 I was thinking about festivals in the US. There's the Bonnaroo Fest which this past year had some big names--old bands--and LOTS of bands I don't know of. They got ~150K over the course of three days. It doesn't seem like there are stadium concerts as in the 70s where there were fewer but big name bands together. Cal Jam II in '78 had around 300K people (not a stadium but that's a lot of people). I know Aerosmith played ten stadiums in 1976 and then you had the annual stadium shows such as the World Series of Rock, California Music Fest, Day On The Green, and then Texxas Jam at the Dallas bowl had fewer but big acts. But I have photos of Peter Frampton, the Stones, etc. at stadiums. Maybe I just don't hear about more US festivals. It seems like Europe has more.

He didn't mention Guns & Roses because at that time, GnR wasn't as well known at the time of this interview. Appetite For Destruction wasn't released until about 6 weeks after Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation (Oct. 1987). It still took several months for GnR to get the momentum going, but (obviously) once they did, they exploded - that was in 1988
