I know people aren't saying Siberian Traps here but it hasn't stopped for months. An doesn't look to soon. We might have to consider this a smaller Siberian Traps.

Flood basalts emit up to hundreds of thousands of cubic kilometers of molten Rock onto the surface. Covering areas of more than hundreds of kilometers in diameter to heights of more than 1000 meters. What were are witnessing in Iceland right now doesn't even come close to that.

Oh please. Even if this was a smaller version of the Siberian Traps then it would be one continuous eruption since December 18. The Sebirian Traps would have had an eruptive volume of well over 10,000 cubic meters per second fir weeks to months at a time.

Animals know when to evacuate even before the volcano erupts. They're more sensitive to sudden changes in the vicinity.

That's Mother Nature for you, I don't hear any climate experts saying anything about co2 levels though 🤔

Omg, on a selfish note, I have a trip planned to Iceland, foreign office advice is its fine, but seems to a bit rubber necking. That said, almost every place you can visit has some terrible stuff going on somewhere

I live in Iceland, in about 40 min. drive from this area. I am not moving or evacuating, there is no problem for us living here with the exception of the people in the town of Grindavik that had to evacuate months ago. The only "disturbance" for tourists is if they had planned to go to the Blue Lagoon, it sometimes has to close if there is an eruption close by but that is about it. As majority of Icelanders live in this part of the country (Greater Reykjavík area, about 40 min drive from the eruption), and they are not in any harms way, then you don't need to worry :)

Many thanks for the reassurance from the ground, and a demonstration of how decent the Icelandic people are. It's my third visit, and if the values of the Icelandic folk were more universal, there would be less bickering going on around the world!

I was just there in January, there was no issue other than the Blue Lagoon being temporarily closed as mentioned above. If you are flying in from North America and haven't pre-selected your seats on the flight in though, be sure to choose one on the right hand side of the plane to ensure you'll get a view of the lava field on the way in, it may be your only chance to see it. Have a great trip!

OMG ! How scary ! Volcanic activity on a Island covered in volcanoes that have been active for over a million years. How surprising.

I think that we were all hoping by now that this event would have calmed itself down. The likelihood is sadly looking less and less likely. Which for Iceland is writing a whole new chapter and doesn't look in favor of its inhabitants. My sixth sense is the authorities need to be ahead of the curve on this one before it claims lives. It needs to be working with third parties, such as N.A.S.A. and the E.S.A. Star Link will play an important role in terms of providing a secure communications network. Scientists and historians need to search through past records to find an identifier which may not necessarily look obvious or stand out in being the "Trigger" What I can tell you is that with the El Nino, this is far from over and the "Ash Cloud" is soon to change direction and end up heading towards "Europe" which will prove catastrophic, both for the ongoing war between Russia/Ukraine and refugee mass migration which will cause many deaths. As a seer, and a deep thinker, volcanic activity is not my strong suit. What scientist do know is we are overdue for a "Polar Shift" and this event could be the main driver for such an event to take place. We know that Polar Shifts have happened at least 5 times before and that we are overdue. We also know that since last year volcanic activity has been on the rise. California is long overdue, as with Yellow Stone National Park, which could easily take place this year and there will be a huge loss of life to those on the Western Seaboard. The Map that the U.S. Navy drew up back in the last century, could now come to pass. Tens of millions of lives will be lost as with "Mass Migration on an never seen before event. My Concerns is the immediate impact this will have on "Global Warming" and "Sea Level Rising" as this event currently taking place in Iceland, seems to be a "Slow Burn Fuse" which no one could have anticipated. I have checked the population for both Iceland and Greenland and as luck would have it the authorities will need a Plan A, B, and C. as evacuation for the ball park figure of 350,000 people is a lot to move, especially when time is not on your side.
