AEG Lavamat washing machine strip down - Sealed drum can't fix :-(

Фильм және анимация

Something different - we try and fix an EAG washing machine - with no success. The new sealed bearing design makes these machines unfixable but in the end it was a corroded inner drum support failure.

I paused it at the point you were about to extract the drum and I'll return in a bit to see how it all goes back together. Thanks fellas. I reckon you saved me from some dramas... I'll let you know soon enough lol

    I just love this video and the comments, and the link in one of the replies to a Russian video which shows the exact same approach but a handsaw rather then an angle grinder so it can be siliconed back together. My only advice is to stick the screws in a piece of card and label them, so you don't have to re-watch your video to find out which screws go where. Keep it up guys - your attitude and determination is impeccable !

    There is a way to split the plastic drum and silicone it back togeather. Drill some holes for screws (& nuts) in the ear sections which are thicker on the same area all around where it has been plastic welded. With a precision saw cut the drum open from where it is platic welded making sure you are cutting it flat and clean as have to put it back togeather. Replace the Y frame or bearing which ever seems to be the problem. Then apply silicone sealant on the face that you have sawed off, join the plastic drum and screw it togeather with suitable screws and nut in the location where holes were drilled. Let it dry over night and check it for any leaks the next day before putting it back in to the machine. Seen it done in other brands of machine where the drum is plastic welded.

    I recently had also a bearing failure in an AEG top loader. For some reason they use replaceable bearings on those. The root cause was an axle gasket failing which allowed water through the bearing rinsing all the greases off of the bearing and subsequent rust build-up. The machine is 3 years old. AEG provided new bearings as a goodwill but I needed to pay for the change.

    Always easier to take bits off then put back.Replacing that seal looked a nightmare.I ve got the same machine and it saved me a long time and frustration taking it all apart. As you say it was destined for the dump after the first five mins so had a bit of fun ripping it all apart .Least I know now why mines knocking and shaking on a spin .

    Apart from the soap drawer and front control panel that AEG machine is exactly the same as our Zanussi machine that l have just dismantled for drum bearing failure. The drum is definitely sealed, the central circumferential joint flange is welded. Although the flange could be split by carefully sawing round it l would seriously question if it could be resealed adequately. This means the drum front bearing, the one that fails, cannot be accessed for replacement. Interestingly our machine lasted for 15 years before bearing failure, so not too bad. A complete replacement drum with new bearings etc is about £225 so not really worth it given the cost of new machines. Our machine went to the tip.

    The AEG is an expensive label on a cheap product, better off buying the half the price, identical apart from the label electrolux. The piss poor bearings and from this video piss poor drum manufacture are just part of the cheap and nasty reality of this machine. Mine was junk after just 6 years of 3 washes a week because of this drum (a replacement costs as much as a new electrolux). Frankly will steer well clear of this companies (groups) products in future

  • @Fastfreddyii

    @@L663 I suspect this isn't a 'typical' problem. You are right about the bearings in your car, but the pressure on them is direct. To make the same comparison you'd need to have wide spacers on each wheel hub, with 14" wheels and tyres, so the forces on the wheel bearing make them act as a fulcrum. With setups like this, even wheel bearings expected to see 40,000 miles of use, will fail early. But the bearings in the machine were reported as 'okay' I thought? The problem appears to have been stress fractures in the bearing hub webbing to the drum. This suggests (only suggests mind) the drum was periodically (so not regular enough to damage the bearings) subject to severe forces (meaning unexpected - outside the design weight) that tried to 'bend' the drum off the bearing hub. That is pretty much defined by lots of heavy towelling. As to why design/use a drum manufacturing technique that can't be serviced? As the bearing can be serviced, I'd say the design works and allows all the usual maintenance necessary (meaning 'expected' maintenance of course). The problem you show, the fracture of the hub, looks like metal fatigue induced by "out of limits" wet weight in the drum. Or periodic heavy use outside the expected life of the drum. (Used for longer than expected. Say 12 years not 10.) Aircraft are designed for and often 'retired' after an expected service life of 20 years. Sometimes they don't reach that age because of an event outside the design envelope, despite the design being over-engineered to accommodate the 'unexpected'. Everyday machines are overengineered too, but not by such a great margin as aircraft. Washing machines are, after all, a consumer product. They are expected to have a finite life. They might last 20 years, but are probably only expected to see a 10 year working life. Rotten seals, limescale filled waterways/biological growths in water ways/failed water heaters/failed electronics, are probably the usual reasons for retirement. People don't expect these things to be serviced any longer - at all. The call-out charges and parts costs make it cheaper to replace the machine.

  • @PaulHojda

    You can't blame people from stuffing up their washing machine when it's advertised to take 7-8KG of dry clothes. If you were to visualize that amount of clothes, you'd be surprised how much that actually us. Also, this is a spider failure due to corrosion. Corrosion is caused by sludge buildup, because people only wash at 30 or 40 degrees with too much liquid detergent and fabric softener. Use power detergent and 60 degrees with no softener regularly, leave the door open after use and the spider will never corrode like that.

  • @talshayar4279

    @talshayar4279

    11 ай бұрын

    Also this is not bearing failure. This is corrosion and subsequent failure of the drum spider, which is caused by poor (deliberate?) design decisions by the manufacturer. Yes, a lot of folk overfill their machine, but in this case that's not the cause of this failure.
