AE86 Project | How To Repair Cracked Tail Lights - Tail Light Restoration

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In today’s video, we are back on the ae86 trueno coupe project . However, we are taking a step back from painting and sanding body panel s and are going to focus on another aspect of the ae86 build. Today I am going to go over how to fix cracked tail lights , how to use nightshades , and how to use aerosol clear coat paint.
This method can also be applied to restoring foggy headlights or side markers on most cars. The materials I used for this project, are listed below:
- Sandpaper pack www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XF4QYVP/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - $13.99 (THIS IS WAY OVERKILL, but I decided I will use the other grits for other projects in the future)
- Gorilla (clear) 5 min. Epoxy - www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Epoxy-85-oz-Clear/dp/B001Z3C3AG/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501436966&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=gorilla+5+min++epoxy - $5.47
- “Vivid Orange” paint from Walmart - $0.50
- VHT Nightshades paint - $10.00
- Spray Max 2k aerosol clear (368 0061) - www.amazon.com/Spray-High-Gloss-Clearcoat-Aerosol/dp/B0043B7UQY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501437076&sr=8-1&keywords=spraymax+2k+clear+coat - $18.88
Grand total: $48.40 (cheaper if you get a smaller pack of sandpaper)
Please keep in mind that the Spray Max 2k clear is not your everyday aerosol clear. It is automotive grade and contains both paint and activator. PLEASE USE PROPER VENTILATION AND A HIGH QUALITY MASK WHEN USING THIS PAINT. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. In a future video I will be using this same process to show how to restore headlights on my Evo. I hope you all enjoyed this ae86 video. Feel free to share the video to other locations and help spread the knowledge.

    Thanks for the kind words and the reassurance on the clear coat👍 so far both the ae86 tails and evo headlights look just as good as the day I cleared them. I am hoping they don't fade or chip in the long term, but so far so good! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 👍😎

    Dude, nice!! Love the ingenuity with the epoxy and inexpensive pigments! I've worked with VHT Niteshades quite a bit, and I know the look you're going for. Two light coats, allow to cure, then use a DA polisher with a microfiber pad and Meguiar's Compound. Some of the tint will compound out, but leave it a shade or two darker than you want it. After compounding, wet sand with 2000 grit, clean, and clearcoat. It'll give that sweet, "stock appearance" tint. Hope this helps! :)

It's my fault I'm not wearing a dusk mask, I tend to get so focused on a project, I tend to forget the simple precautions, like throwing on a dust mask or gloves. Still a little hesitant about sanding the evo headlights, but if the finish turns out like the 86s tails, I'll be super happy haha. How did yours turn out?

    I’ve been dealing with this a while. UV made them what they are and proves to be the culprit to many repairs. The night shade rattle can suck. 2k clear with black tint to preference. JB weld contractor pack with a bondo applicator sanded. The plastic is brittle and flex’s at pressure, repaired squire a few in my days. Can’t justify taillights that cost more than the car. Great video, keep it coming.

    Great job! But Highly recommend not spaying tint. Instead wrap in tinted film. It's consistant and removable if you want to change later. Plus it doubles as a rock guard. That clear is the bomb! Used it many times to do fenders and smaller projects, even did whole bumper covers before. You only have 24hrs to use it after mixing so make sure you have enough project to use all of it and not waste it as it's $22 a can on Amazon. I always dust the 1st coat on and then go a lil heavier the following passes.

    Thanks for the comment and suggestion! After using the VHT night shades, I would probably suggest the same. Tinted film seems like a great option, and it removable. My only worry would be the tint de-laminating or flaking off. I guess one could say the same for paint if it isn't prepped and applied right. That clear coat is magic in a can! It's crazy to see how far aerosol paints have come! Thanks for tuning into the channel, hope you are enjoying the content!

    I'm mostly just curious about the spiderweb like cracks. I have a 1988 Honda Accord hatchback that looks very similar, and has a fairly large region that is just filled with little internal cracks and I don't know how to fix it and you cannot find the *hatchback* tail lights for that year anywhere for sale...

    I was fixing a pair of 79' Accord tail lights today and found a nasty crack. Y cant find that epoxy here, so i am thinking in using clearcoat as a glue (no missing parts), i hope it works! Great great job btw, those tails looks brand new right now.

    No problem, glad you liked it and happy to see you are going to try it on yours as well. If you decide to try and tint them, make sure you hold the Niteshades can high above the tails to avoid streaking, which is what happened to mine. Nightshades is sort of hard to work with, if it's your first time using it lol. Goodluck and let me know if you run into any problems or have any questions.

    How is the repair (epoxy) holding up after these years? Great idea to add acrylic color (the lenses are likely acrylic also). I tried some generic epoxy on my old 370z tail, and it held for a few years before de-bonding slightly (possibly due to expansion rates and UV). Have you considered a “weld-on” solvent, like for acrylic/plexiglass fish tanks? I am experimenting on some old Mazda tail lights right now

    Hey mate, I know it's an old video now but just wanted to say they turned out very well. I've had issues in the past with NiteShades, it is a very very dark tint, no matter how far back you spray from, to get proper coverage it always ends up dark. One thing you can do is actually get clear coat in a gun and put a very small amount of black in the clear. It'll spray much nicer then the pressure pack NiteShades.

  • @TheBSRecord

    @TheBSRecord

    Thanks man, they still look perfect today too! Yeah, I have heard from a lot of people about niteshades being difficult to spray. I definitely want to try what you suggested on a future set but I have to get better with a paint gun before trying. Thanks for watching and commenting, I love hearing feedback from the viewers!
